In a similar vein, Rosenberg questions whether the souls of the deceased have gone down into the earth:

Despairingly and gloomily, Rosenberg wonders whereabouts the souls of the dead have gone and implicitly accuses Earth, personified here, of taking them into her underground. The dead have presumably gone down into Earth via the DEATH IS DEPARTURE metaphor, which is given rise to by the linguistic expressions “Have they gone into you?” and “Somewhere they must have gone,” and then “their souls’ sack” were hurled out on Earth’s “hard back.” This image of Earth
