...President Barack Obama used a Decision Support System called Neighbor to Neighbor during his 2008 campaign. This DSS contained names, addresses, issues of interest and data to that particular voter, and past voting records of each voter that were undecided in the campaign. This system allowed Obama’s staff members to create effective customized speeches, fliers, etc. that would ultimately convince that particular voter to vote for Obama (Decision Support…). Decision support systems are being used to influence presidential elections. Mitt Romney for example began a secretive data-mining project, to look through American’s information such as, purchasing history and church attendance in order to identify likely wealthy donors. For his election data-mining project, this will rely on thousands of expensive databases that are legally bought/sold behind the scenes by corporations. This includes credit accounts, families and children, voter registrations, charitable contributions, property tax records, and survey responses. This database combined with marketing data creates a psychographic data analysis, which then flushes out Americans consumer behavior and habits. Decision Support Services (DSS) is technology that is available to turn your sales data and statistics into efficient management tools and organized reports. One useful DSS offerings is provided via IMSMART which allows your company to customize reports based off of the information you’re interested in. IMSMART offers...

...Decision Support Systems December 22, 2014 Decision Support Systems Many businesses are faced with situations that need critical analysis, compilation of raw data, circulation of precise documents and effective utilization of computer systems. Frito Lay is an example of a company who implemented various decision support systems (DSS) into their business model. A DSS is a “highly flexible and interactive IT system that is designed to support decision making when the problem is not structured.” (Haag, Cummins p.162) Managers require information to guide their organization in the right direction. DSS increases productivity, efficiency, and enhances understanding of business processes. DSS helped carve their business success, facilitate management making qualitative decisions, and turned their raw data into valued information that was needed by employees and management. DSS assist the management and employees of Frito-Lay by delivering statistical and data retrieving systems. Employees of Frito-Lay also used DSS systems in searching information that was germane to their job function. The three main components of a DSS are model management, data management and interface management. “The model requests the information from the data management component, analyzes the information, and sends the results to the user interface management component, which in turn passes the results back,” (Haag, Cummins p.163) to the user. There are many types of DSS systems and hybrid DSS systems...

These features make it the appropriate tool for this project as over 1000 rows and 29 columns of data needed to be manipulated and analysed to create 8 different scenarios to allow the best decision to be made. The DDS was utilised to analyse sales data to determine that the Store Mark-up type would be the most beneficial option for the business. Analysis of the ‘Selling Price’ column of the Report was conducted to ensure that other factors such as discounts would not affect the outcomes. The decision support system is one such system. According to Laudon et al (2006), decision support systems are “information systems at the organization’s management level that combine data and sophisticated analytical models or data analysis tools to support semi-structured and unstructured decision making”. (p. 462) STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The Entertainers Credit Union Limited has been in existence for twenty years. Its main revenue building products are loans. At present, however, management has noticed a significant downturn in revenues linked directly to a persistent reduction of loans inflow as well as a decline in applications for membership. Turban (1995) defines it as "an interactive, flexible, and adaptable computerbased information system, especially developed for supporting the solution of a nonstructured management problem for improved decision making. It utilizes data, provides an easy-to-use interface, and allows for the decision maker's own insights." For Little (1970), a DSS is a "model-based set of procedures for processing data and judgments to assist a manager in his decision-making." Moore and Chang (1980) define DSS as extendible systems capable of supporting ad hoc data analysis and decision modeling, oriented toward future planning, and used at irregular, unplanned intervals. importance of DSS to assist in high-level decision-making, assist academic advising staff, improve the quality and timeliness of marketing decisions, and medical diagnosis process; and current issues of DSS where decision-making as the most important activities for human beings, Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSSs), several...
