“A knight proves his worthiness by his deeds.” Kevin and Maxwell, the two protagonists in Rodman Philbrick’s Freak the Mighty, try to live these philosophy every day. Two boys with quite different skills and interests come together in this novel to form a mutually beneficial friendships. In their quest to become noble knights making the world a better place, the boys go on many adventures as they rescue a woman from an abusive man, return stolen property, and rescue each other as needed. In the movie version titled The Mighty and produced by Miramax, the boys encounter a woman being abused by a man in a public place. They step in and stand up to the man. As news spreads out the Killer Kane is on parole, the tension is weighing down on Max, Grim and Gram, and the rest of the neighborhood. It was if they could feel his presence lingering every day, every step. The one night, Killer Kane decides to pay a visit to his son and set him straight on the truth. With his terrible path behind him, it is awfully hard to believe that Kenny Kane is a changed man.
