Leadership

...Many will agree that leadership is lacking in the world today. In hard economic times, organizations tend to make cuts wherever they can. Services and programs the company pays for or invests time into that do not show immediate and tangible result are often the first to be cut. While over 50 percent of company’s surveyed in 2005 planned to offer mentoring programs, these were reserved for management positions and directorships (Gray 2005). Without being able to find an individual mentor or coach, how does the average employee develop their leadership behaviors? How does the college graduate groom themselves for a leadership role? Everyone can engage in self-training. The following pages outline a basic process that anyone can engage on their own to develop their leadership behaviors and begin to make choices as leaders. It is helpful to remember that before we can be the leader of others, we must be leaders of ourselves. Those that do not take choices consciously and lead themselves fall into the roll of the follower without realizing it. While it is healthy to be excellent followers as the situation warrants, that is not going to be the focus of this training. Additionally, it is important to address the difference between habits and choices. A habit, as defined, is an acquired behavior pattern regularly followed until it has become almost involuntary. In the future, it may be helpful to develop the following behaviors into habits. Initially, however, these...

Walt Disney: Leadership Paper

...Introduction Leadership has many meanings, depending who you talk to. This paper will concentrate on leadership as the ability for one to influence others in reaching common goals (Northouse, 2013). The focus of this report is on Walt Disney, a man who demonstrated, both positive and negative leadership throughout his life. The leadership theories which will be focused on for this report include concept of power, trait approach, skills approach, style approach, and transformational leadership will be explored and applied to Disney’s experiences. Biography Walt Disney was born on December 5, 1901 in Chicago, Illinois. At the age of four, his family moved to Missouri, where his love for drawing and arts developed. When he was 18 he moved to Kansas and was employed at the Pesmen-Rubin Art Studio (Mosley, 2002). He soon after opened his first animation studio, Laugh O’ Grams with his brother, Roy Disney (World Biography, 2014). The studio grew in popularity, but eventually went bankrupt due to poor financial managing and high employee costs (Mosley, 2002). This prompted the brother’s move to California. Here they opened the Disney Brothers’ Studio in Hollywood (Disney, 2014). Walt met his wife, Lillian Bounds, who was hired at the studio in 1925. The pair got married and had two daughters, Diane and Sharon (Mosley, 2002). In 1926, Mickey Mouse was created and featured in the first animated short with sound, Steamboat Willie (World Biography, 2014). Nine years later...

Bovey Bovey Management (Certified Consultants), Queensland, Australia Andrew Hede University of the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia Keywords Organizational change, Resistance, Defence, Humour Abstract Observes that the published literature on resistance to organisational change has focused more on organisational issues rather than individual psychological factors. The present study investigated the role of both adaptive and maladaptive defence mechanisms in individual resistance. Surveys were conducted in nine organisations undergoing major change and responses were obtained from 615 employees. The results indicate that five maladaptive defence mechanisms are positively correlated with behavioural intention to resist change, namely, projection, acting out, isolation of affect, dissociation and denial. The adaptive defence mechanism of humour was found to be negatively correlated with resistance intention. Identifies two intervention strategies which can be used by management to address the effects of defence mechanisms on resistance during periods of change in organisations. Journal...
