Defense of the Ancient

...When Mom and Dad have sexual intercourse, my Dad places his erect penis inside my mom's vagina. He releases millions of sperm when ejaculation occurs. And the sperm have been deposited they have a long and arduous journey ahead of them, like salmon entering the mouth of a river to swim upstream to spawn. Some of the sperm swim straight up into the fallopian tubes through the cervix and uterus. - And some of them are so fast, that sperms have been found in the tubes in as little as a few minutes after ejaculation. I’m one of them joining the rides. Some sperms die in the acidic vaginal fluid; and some enter the cervical mucus and cervical crypts. During this time, the sperms are released in small numbers and these continue to swim towards the fallopian tubes. Over the millions of sperms released in an ejaculate, only a few hundred of us will make the arduous trip unto the egg successfully. Perhaps this is why so many millions of sperms are produced in the first place even though only one is needed to fertilize the egg - because the wastage is so prodigal. During the time the sperm spend in the female reproductive tract, while swimming towards the egg, they acquire the capacity to fertilize it - a process called capacitation. When the sperms reach the corona cells (only a few hundred successfully make the trip, guided by chemicals produced by the egg which serve as guiding beacons to the sperms) they become hyperactivated - they start beating their tails in frenzy. This is useful...

Aeschylus' Solution to the Endless Cylce of Blood-Feud in the Orestian Trilogy

...‘The Eumenides’ shows that the Olympian gods or deities were connected with the polis and civilized life as such as the city’s defense. Hence Apollo defense of Agamemnon, king of the state, father of Orestes and husband of Clytemnestra is seen as the true defense of the society of Athens. His concern for order is clearly expressed in his speech to the Erinyes: ‘Then you dishonor and annul the marriage- bond Of Zeus and Hera, that confirms all marriage- bonds; And by your argument the sweetest source of joy To mortals, Aphrodite, falls into contempt. Marriage, that joins two persons in Fate’s ordinance, Guarded by justice, stands more sacred than an oath…’ (Eumenides 213ff) Apollo said marriage is the key stone of the civilized society. It is the only institution that makes the other partner a kinsman; as such if Clytemnestra’s crime goes unpunished, it becomes the end of the keystone. ‘You are unjust to persecute Orestes’ life His crime, I know, you take most grievously to heart; While for his mother’s you show open leniency. Pallas herself shall hear this case, and judge our pleas.’ (Eumenides 221ff) The Erinyes, those ancient servants of justice could however promise no solution since they felt had the right to punish Orestes for killing his mother and...

Greek Wars

...Weapons/Warfare of Ancient Greece Weapons/Warfare of Ancient Greece The Ancient Greeks went through their dark age in the ages leading up to the 8th century BC. After the 8th century BC until the 6th century AD this period can be categorized as the Ancient Greek period of history. This is a period of interesting wars and advances in warfare. I will take a deeper look in this paper into the different wars, leaders and weapons used. There were many great wars in this period. The Greek states often fought each other. Sparta and Athens fought a long war, called the Peloponnesian War, during the period from 431 to 404 BC. Sparta won. Only the threat of attack by a foreign enemy made the Greeks forget their quarrels and fight on the same side. Their main enemy was Persia. The conflicts against Persia lasted on and off from 490 to 449 BC. The Persian kings tried to defeat Greece and make it part of the Persian Empire. In the end, it was Greece which conquered Persia, when Alexander the Great conquered the Persian Kingdom in the 330s BC. The strength of the army was the hoplite. They were foot soldier, and the artilleries were a long spear and a sword. They also had a shield. Hoplites clashed in lines or ranks. Eight to ten ranks made a formation called the phalanx. Each soldier held his long spear underarm. Enemy fighters saw only a figure of spears and shields, that was tough to go through and tough to break once it started advancing forward. The Greeks had archers and cavalry...

What Is Apologetics

...Craig Reflection Paper Carlette Douglas Oklahoma Wesleyan University Apologetics An apology, as the term is used here, is not saying "I'm sorry." Rather, it means a ready defense; "offered in defense or vindication, especially of the divine origin and authority of Christianity." Thus an apology is a defense of what you believe to be true. An apologist is a person who makes the defense. And apologetics is a "systematic argumentative discourse in defense." (All quotes in this paragraph taken from Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary. The reason I should defend my faith as First Peter 3:15 says, "Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have." When non-Christians ask tough questions about the Christian faith, I will be able to give a solid and logical response. If not, there is an opportunity lost to spread God's Word. Worse, the Christian who has a weak foundation for his faith can be easily shaken by the doubts of non-believers. Though not everything in the Bible can be proven beyond a shadow of a doubt, there is far more proof than most people Christian or non-Christian are aware of. As apologists for my faith, it is my job to line up the available evidence, base my decisions upon it, and present the evidence to others to help give them an intelligent foundation for their decisions. "An intelligent Christian ought to be able to point up the flaws in a non-Christian position and to present facts and arguments...

Golf

...Lowkeshwar Puni Is Golf a Sport? The origin of sports dates all the way back to the first Homo sapiens. However, the importance of sports on society was realized by the ancient Greeks. The Greeks used sports as a means of entertainment but it was also used to bring relief on the conflicts between major cities. The participants in these games were of the strongest and fastest athletes of their time and they were seen as godlike figures. As time has passed, modern day perception of sports and its athletes have remained the same. Athletes and sports are as popular as ever and it is because they show us things that many of us can’t do physically. The label of sport is one that brings respect and a sense of greatness for its athletes. For people to consider golf a sport is based on pure fallacy, and it does a disservice on the origins of sports and why it was created. Sports were brought about as a viewing of the best athletes fiercely competing against one another and golf is the opposite of that. Golf and its participants also take away from the greatness of true athletes that put in the hard work of mastering their sport, which is immeasurable, more complex and difficult to master. For a person to relate an athlete of Lebron James to Tiger Woods is blasphemous, and goes to show how golf can undermine what a true athlete is. Ultimately, Golf is not a sport due...

Examples Of Family Loyalty In The Odyssey

...Demonstrations of Family Loyalty In ancient Greek societies where a woman’s most important role is that of caring for the home and family, the extent of a woman’s loyalty to her family is worthy of exploration. In Homer’s The Odyssey, Penelope is the wife of Odysseus, whose long absence from home tests her loyalty to him. In comparison to Penelope, Antigone from Sophocles’ Antigone is tested in family loyalty when a law forbids her to bury her brother. Jocasta from Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex, similarly to Penelope, is tested when her husband’s innocence in a murder case is called into question. While Antigone displays more action in her demonstration of family loyalty, Penelope exhibits the ideal way of showing loyalty to one’s family as her willpower and careful strategies are more successful than that of Antigone and Jocasta. Women in most ancient Greek societies had few rights compared to men, and were submissive to their male superiors, but both Penelope and Antigone’s actions in defense of the loved ones contradict this custom. Penelope is more passive in her actions, telling her eager suitors, “‘Young men, my suitors… go slowly… until I can finish off this web… This is a shroud for old lord Laertes, for that day when the deadly fate… will take him down’”...

He then describes the different between the worldview of the Ancient Near East and continuity is different from the Bible’s transcendence. The second half of the book, “The Bible and History,” examines several philosophical thoughts proposed by others that attempt to explain the Bible’s relevance separate from historical validity. Oswalt provides excellent arguments against the new age philosophies. Oswalt provides an articulate argument for the veracity of the Bible’s history and theology by providing several convincing points to affirm the Bibles varicity.   Introduction John N.
