Imagine an elderly person with glasses perched on their nose, rocking in an old chair on their front porch. Generally, in stories this person helps guide the main character to make the right decision. Although this is stereotypical and conventional wisdom, does a person automatically assume that they have all the answers in life? Or do you think that the person who learns from work experience does? Or the person who has the highest degree? In Webster's Dictionary it states that wisdom is accumulated philosophical or scientific learning: knowledge. So, does the person with the highest degree, skilled trades career, or someone who has experienced through age truly have wisdom? Let’s start with college education. By 2020 65% of all jobs will

Personal Responsibilty Essay

...Webster,”). While making excuses, individuals who use an ethical lens of rights and responsibility utilize a number of traits when assuming personal responsibility for college success. In my personal responsibility essay I would like to identify a few of the traits a responsible person should possess for college success. Define what personal responsibility means to me. Explain the correlation of personal responsibility and college success. I also will outline a preliminary plan to practice personal responsibility with in my education. When a student uses rights and responsibility to accept responsibility in order to achieve college success, he or she must possess a number of traits. One such trait would be the ability to reason. Reason is the ability to use critical thinking as means for learning and complex problem solving. Students who possess this trait are also excellent at gathering and analyzing information in order to make an informed decision. Another trait that students who use the rights and responsibility lens display is self-knowledge. This individual knows what they are doing and why they are doing it. When this type of person commits to something they follow through. These are a few of the traits that I feel a student would to possess when accepting personal responsibility for college success. In addition to traits which would allow a student to accept personal responsibility, one must define personal responsibility from their own perspective. Responsibility...

Personal Responsibility Essay

...Personal Responsibility Essay Gen 200 July 28, 2014 Personal Responsibility Essay “Being thoughtful and taking responsibility serves you well, as your accountability is one measure of your success. In our professional and personal lives, most of us typically take responsibility for our actions, words, and attitudes. An occasional “oops” can rapidly put us on a radar that we'd prefer not to be on, irrevocably annoy our student population, or cause a family rift.”  (Zavod, 2014) Personal responsibility is a choice we all have to face when deciding to do the things that will help our future or the lives of those in our care, like my personal responsibility to succeed at college to better support my family. For me, that “oops” could have drastic impacts on our family’s financial well-being. Each person has their own definition of personal responsibility determined by their own background. If one includes financial success in their definition of personal responsibility they need a plan in place for how to achieve financial success. Naturally, there is then a large correlation between personal responsibility, financial success, and the success one has in their education. Each person should have a plan to complete their education and how their own personal responsibility fits in with that goal. Merriam Webster says responsibility is “something that you should do because it is morally right” (Merriam-Webster, 2014). For me going back to school is a personal responsibility...

Paying College Athletes

...Tech Community College Fort Wayne, Indiana 46835 Dear Professor Royce- I am writing this cover letter to you as a part of the Informative essay assignment for English 111. I choose to write about the current debate over whether college athletes should be paid for their time and effort while playing their chosen sport at colleges and universities across America. I received only one peer review on Blackboard, and was underwhelmed by the response that I received. Jairret Boyce was the only classmate that responded to my essay, and in his peer review, he merely agreed that I did everything well. This was not very helpful in the completion of my final draft for this assignment. The only helpful feedback that I received was from you, with the notes that you made on my first draft, with the most important information being that my thesis statement would not work because I presented it in the form of a question. I made the proper changes to my thesis statement to make sure that it shows the two different sides to the debate that I writing about to inform my audience. After receiving the grade for my essay in writing project two, I wanted to make sure that I did a better job with my Works Cited page. I went to the library, and was shown Noodle tools, and made sure to use that resource to make sure I completed a quality Works Cited page for this assignment. I am looking forward to completing Writing Project four, as I have spent three weeks working on this essay, and have been...

Responsible Me

...exist in my life are existent due to the commitments that I have accepted. I committed to being a stable partner to my wife, to being a dedicated father, to display a good amount of volunteerism, and to uphold strong religious values. These standards bring challenges that require the use of appropriate time management, commitment, determination and confidence in order to be successful. It is my responsibility to approach my education with the same resilience I have in these other areas of my life. A person may conclude that I could not maintain a balanced life that consists of being a loving spouse, raising two children, working forty (40) hours a week, attending to my social endeavors, worshiping in my faith and studying for college. If asked why I would add college to my other tasks, I would say that at this point in my life, I recognize the career opportunities, earning potential and power a person has when they hold a degree. Through the years, I have always prioritized other responsibilities ahead of completing my college education, but I realize that there is no better time than the present for “responsible me” to take this on. Define Personal Responsibility In my efforts to define personal responsibility, I start reflecting on the values and principles that are core in my life, which keep me focused on completing each of my committed tasks. It all starts with ensuring that the needs of my family have been met, so that they are offered the best quality of life...

...about. By starting a paragraph with a topic sentence, your audience may immediately identify your topic. This construction also helps you, the writer, stay focused on your subject. Consider the following example of an essay introduction: The first sentence is the topic sentence: It tells the readers they will learn about past narratives. The sentences that follow the topic sentence relate to the topic sentence because they provide examples of past narratives. Finally, the last sentence is the thesis of the essay, which expresses the author’s position on the topic and previews what the entire paper is about. You learn more about writing effective introductions later in this course. Supporting Paragraphs Every paragraph after your introduction must be a supporting paragraph. ...Assessment Essay p. 5-10 College Learning Essay p. 11-17 Analyzing Arguments Essay p. 18-23 Cover Letter This midterm portfolio shows how I have progressed has a college reader and writer. Before this class I had trouble even understanding how to write a thesis and now I think I can definitely write a college level thesis. I have progressed to know how to incorporate my evidence into my concise and focused thesis statement. For example in the self assessment essay my thesis was, “Due to transferring to many schools over my first two years of college, I feel like I have had the opportunity to build up many habits of mind from Framework for Success in Post-Secondary Writing, especially in flexibility, openness and persistence but still can develop in metacognition and creativity in order to become a more successful college writer.” This showed that I could adapt a thesis to the assignment and it was focused and used my sources. At this point in the semester, a strength I have is the ability to connect source evidence with my thesis. I am able to develop my focused thesis around source-based evidence. For example in the college learning essay I was able to use my interview with my friend who was an elementary teacher to help develop my thesis about how teaching has changed due to technology. I also think another strength I have is organizing my paper in a proper order. In the three essays in this portfolio I organized the essays with...

Background and introduction Students had written card to their tutor; ‘Merry Christmas’ was the message and in a variety of languages: English, Italian, Chinese, Polish, African, German, Malaysian, Spanish and others, which remained unidentified (tutor’s limitations). It was touching, but more than that it was a sharp reminder that for teaching to be relevant and meaningful to students, course design and teaching has to take into account the issues, needs and opportunities presented by learner diversity and increasing globalisation. An inclusive definition of diversity A personal, anecdotal recognition of the importance of student diversity is backed by weight of evidence and research. The Higher Education Statistics Agency (2005), identified that of all first degree students in 2003/4, at least 6.4% were known to have a disability, c. 56% were female and 16% part time. Numerous references, projects, papers and discussions are dedicated to the topics of diversity and its stable mate ‘widening participation’. They have emerged, not only in specialist HE channels such as the HEFCE website but also, as...

Rhetorical modes simply mean the ways in which we can effectively communicate through language. This chapter covers nine common rhetorical modes. As you read about these nine modes, keep in mind that the rhetorical mode a writer chooses depends on his or her purpose for writing. Sometimes writers incorporate a variety of modes in one essay. In covering the nine rhetorical modes, this chapter also emphasizes these as a set of tools that will allow you greater flexibility and effectiveness in communicating with your audience and expressing your ideas. rhetorical modes The ways in which we effectively communicate through language. 1.1 The Purpose of Narrative Writing Narration means the art of storytelling, and the purpose of narrative writing is to tell stories. A factual story is one that is based on, and tries to be faithful to, actual events as they unfolded in real life. A fictional story is a made-up, or imagined, story; the writer of a fictional story can create characters and events as he or she sees fit. “Whoever You Want to Be”

...UGS Essay #1 9/21/2015 “Whoever You Want to Be” “You are Asian, so go study,” “You are black, try that sport,” “Hey White, don’t be racist just go to parties,” “Hey Mexican, can you get some drugs for me?” This is the reality of society. We say racism is gone, but this is how we view each race and define each race. In fact, this is the reality of how each race of child is influenced and raised. Racism still exists not because we haven’t talked enough about it, but because we never try to change it. Likewise, born in a foreign country, I faced this unchangeable problem as an international student with different views. Also through these diverse experiences I came to frame my identity racially and personally throughout my life. “Hey, is racism harsh in America?” “How fast are black people? Do they actually carry guns?” These are questions that I was asked when I went back to Korea this summer. Unfortunately, Internet is a huge network nowadays and it affects everyone in the world. Those questions were not randomly asked, but because that is what people see in movies and news reports. Most racial stereotypes are framed according to what is in the media, the reason they are constructed. For example, recently there was a huge issue in Texas about a 14 year old Muslim genius boy who was arrested because his invention, a homemade clock, was assumed to be a bomb by the teacher. He was arrested and handcuffed because he was a Muslim. I doubt this would have happened if it were another...

Adult Education

...David Holmes Sim Barhoum English 101 Effective College English II February 09, 2013 Argument Essay “Adult Education” Modern day America has the ability to provide a basic education to anyone. What does it mean to be educated? An idea of education is someone who has all the answers. It could be a person who has been through the hardship of school and has come out on top, or someone who makes a living with what they have learned. In “Adult Education” by Mortimer J. Adler, he describes how society’s education system is flawed and does not provide the best education for people. Alder speaks of how education starts at childhood and ends when they become an adult and receive their degree. To him this idea is wrong because youth have not developed the patience or the experience to be educated. Therefore, education only truly comes when a person goes through life and has become a mature adult. The value of education will never be understood by youth, but by people who have gone through the hardships of life and have gained wisdom through life experience. In order to fully understand what Mortimer Adler is talking about in his essay, “Adult Education,” we must understand the historical and cultural context from which he is speaking. Modern readers who misunderstand this context are likely to misinterpret his intentions and thereby fail to see the logic behind his recommendations, which are still relevant to educational reform issues today. Adler was a philosopher enamored...

Do Laptops Help Improve a Students Learning in Their Education?

...Do Laptops Help Improve A Students Learning In Their Education? In high school I was a very technological guy even though it wasn’t appreciated. Not being able to use technology in high school was always an annoyance of mine. I’d always think about how there’s technology that would be useful to a student during school. Who wouldn’t love to have Wikipedia and a spell checker handy at all times? During my high school career, I would always get in trouble for using my phone as a source to look up a word definition on an app. I would hate it very much, only because I would only be looking for knowledge and wasn’t that what school was about? Looking for knowledge and learning ways to use that knowledge. Anyways, I graduated high school and fortunately I was able to go to college. Many questions came to mind about how college was going to be. Would it be better than high school, or would it be just as bad? Coming into college I discovered something totally opposite from my prediction about it. It was probably one of the happiest days of my life coming into college and realizing that technology could be used in classes! I have been doing research for the past 2-3 weeks to figure out if laptops help improve students learning in their educational career in order to find a partially accurate answer. However, problems with this are that teachers say that students tend to go on laptops and forget about class. This is sometimes true but David Silvernail, in his book T.H.E Journal, Volume...
