A deformity is the distortion or malformation of the body, including physical, mental and emotional concepts. In correlation, scarring is defined as an infliction on the body that leaves an imprint on the physical and psychological on a person’s well-being. Throughout The Kite Runner, written by Khaled Hosseini, the author displays the distress and strain on a few of the characters through various ways, counting physical, mental, and emotional agony. Ali, a notable character in the novel, suffers from physical deformities that Hosseini developed for his character. Ali, a Hazaran servant in house of Amir, suffers with congenital paralysis of his lower face. When Amir was a child, he faced a huge decision to stand up for his friend, which was being raped, but had mixed feelings with the type of action he should take. The text states, “I had one last chance to make a decision…I could step in that alley, stand up for Hassan-the way he’d stood up for me all those times in the past- and accept whatever happened to me. Or I could run. In the end, I ran” (Hosseini 77). Witnessing someone you care about are violated, already traumatizes a person. Along with that, Amir would struggle for the rest of his life because he made the decision to run from something that he could have interfered with. Overtime, guilt would settle in and cause a scar in his memory. As a scar, he will always remember that night and how he was selfish not to defend his friend. Hosseini uses this event in the story to show Amir’s true colors and to create a future storyline. Since Amir is showing his true personality, shows the reader, that can relate to this topic, some people will choose themselves over
