Delta Beefs Up Diversity Training for Crews Amid Tension
Description:
This article discusses Delta Air Lines Inc.’s recent decision to increase diversity training for flight crews. In 2016, there were 74 cases of discrimination against passengers by flight assistants. Over the past few years, this number has been on the increase. Management at Delta Air Lines has decided to increase the breadth of the cross-cultural and diversity training required to be on a flight crew with the hopes of increasing culture awareness and decreasing discrimination.
Analysis:
Delta Air Lines’ decision to expand diversity training shows they are aware of the current discrimination problem and wish to amend it. They hope to increase customer satisfaction as well as fix internal difficulties regarding …show more content…
Multiple instances in the article lend themselves to the notion that discrimination is an issue; however, they are primarily relating to customer relations. It would also be a good idea to increase the employee diversity by hiring more minority workers. This would not only increase the diversity of the employees; it would also decrease the discrimination against customers because a larger percentage of the flight attendants would be from different cultures as well. Thus, increased diversity has multiple advantages.
As mentioned towards the end of the article, there needs to be a universal approach to the topic of diversity. The article states that office employees are typically the receivers of the most diversity and cross-culture training. This seems to go against the needs of the company. There needs to be a shift from office-based training to crew-based training because the flight crews have a stronger connection with the customers. Fortunately, this is exactly what Delta Air Lines is doing. Hopefully this policy change will help alleviate cultural disparity for Delta Air Lines in the
