Preface

University of Dhaka is the leading university in Bangladesh. Since its foundation it has been spreading knowledge among the students through 13 Faculties, 66 Departments, 8 Institutes and more than 35 Research Centers. Business Studies Faculty is one of them. In business faculty there are 8 departments. They are Finance Department, Accounting Department, Marketing Department, Management Department, Banking Department, and Management Information System (MIS) Department, International Business Department & Tourism & Hospitality Management Department.

We the students of 17th batch, Department of Finance, University of Dhaka, section A. We were required to make a survey on our classmates & make a report on it. This report is given us as a requirement of the course entitled “Business English & Communication (F-101)”, to gather knowledge and experience about our classmates.

We prepared this report on direction of our supervisor Mr. Mostafa Manzur Hasan, Lecturer, Department of Finance, on the topic: “Demography & Academic performance of students of B.B.A.17th batch”. This report has been prepared on the basis of information that we have known from the primary sources and the information we have collected from our classmates. There are 90 students in our class. We take a sample of 30 students out of 90 students.

On this report we get acquainted to our classmates. We surveyed on them and gathered the information given by them. Then we explain the demographic features of our class. We are also very much grateful to our fellow students of 17th batch of Finance Department, for their cordial help and giving us valuable information.

Through this report we can see total demographic features of our class. On this report we try to show a look over our classmates of section ‘A’, B.B.A. 17th batch Department of Finance , University of Dhaka.

Chapter-One

Introduction

1.1 Objective of the report:

As a part of our study curriculum in BBA course, we have been assigned to conduct a study on “Demography & Academic Performance of Students-a study on 17th Batch finance students of the University of Dhaka. So, we have randomly selected 30 students of section ‘A’ 17th Batch Finance students of the University of Dhaka.

1.2 Methodology:

After getting the assigned task at first we randomly selected sample of 30 students out of population of 90 students from section A. Then we surveyed on those students for gathering information. There we collected information from the students.

1.3 Scope of the report:

➢ To attain knowledge about Lease Finance in Bangladesh.. ➢ To fulfill the partial requirement of our course of “Business English and Communication’’. (F-101). ➢ To analyze different terms of lease financing.

1.4 Limitations:

There are some limitations that we have faced during preparing the report. Among them time limitation is one of the acute one. Though all of the information used in this report is genuine, we should make this report more informative and practical.

Chapter-Two

Brief Overview of the Department of Finance University of Dhaka

2.1 University of Dhaka:

On the first day of July 1921 the University of Dhaka opened its doors to students with Sir P.J. Hertzog as the first Vice-Chancellor of the University. The University was set up in a picturesque part of the city known as Ramna on 600 acres of land.

The University started its activities with 3 Faculties, 12 Departments, 60 teachers, 877 students and 3 dormitories (Halls of Residence) for the students. At present the University consists of 13 Faculties, 66 Departments, 8 Institutes, 17 dormitories, 3 hostels and more than 35 Research Centers. The number of students and teachers has risen to about 33,112 and 1,805 respectively.

The main purpose of the University was to create new areas of knowledge and disseminate this knowledge to the society through its students. Since its inception the University has a distinct character of having distinguished scholars as faculties who have enriched the global pool of knowledge by making notable contributions in the fields of teaching and research.

2.2 Faculty of Business Studies:

The Faculty of Business Studies, as it stands now, has a long history. The Department of Commerce was established under the Faculty of Arts of the University of Dhaka in the year 1921. This Department emerged as an independent Faculty in 1970 with only two Departments –the Department of Management and the Department of Accounting – in 1970. The Department of Marketing and the Department of Finance were created in 1974. The semester system was introduced in this Faculty from the session 1977-1978. The Faculty of Commerce was renamed as the Faculty of Business Studies in 1995. During 1994-95, the names of the B.Com. (Hons.) and M.Com degrees were changed to BBA and MBA degrees respectively. From the same academic session, the 4-year BBA Program was introduced in place of 3-year B.Com. (Hons) Program. The one-year M.Com. Program was also renamed as MBA Program. During the year 2004, two more Departments were created under this Faculty namely, the Department of Banking and the Department of Management Information Systems (MIS). During the academic session 2007-2008, two other Departments were also added to this Faculty namely, the Department of Tourism & Hospitality Management and the Department of International Business. At present there are 153 teachers, 10 Officers and 58 employees and around 6,092 students in the 8 Departments under the Faculty of Business Studies.

2.3 Department of Finance:

The vision of the Department of Finance is to develop skilled human resource with specialized education and training in finance. Since its inception in 1974, the Department has been committed to catering to the needs of modern business world and has been producing executives and trained manpower with strong skills in finance.

Over the period of last 30 years, the Department of Finance has earned considerable reputation for the commitment and devotion to academic excellence. Faculty members are actively engaged in research and have many research publications to their credit. The expertise of teaching staff, research activities and dynamic curriculum has made the Department a unique institution in and outside the University.

The Department offers four-year BBA program, one-year MBA program and other post-graduate programs, including M. Phil. and Ph.D. in Finance. Recently, the department has introduced Evening MBA Program for executives and professionals. The Department is equipped with a modern Computer Lab named after 'Omar Sultan Foundation' catering to the needs for developing the computer skills of students. All classrooms are equipped with overhead projectors, sound systems and multi-media projectors to facilitate the students in presenting case studies and term papers. The offices of the teachers, the lab and the classrooms are equipped with internet facilities.

In our survey we found that:

• 53% (16 students out of 30) of the students have come from Dhaka division.

• 27% (8 students out of 30) of the students have come from Chittagong division.

• 13% (4 students out of 30) of the students have come from Rangpur division.

• 7% (2 students out of 30) of the students have come from Khulna division.

After the calculation we found:

• Average GPA of SSC examination of the 17th batch finance students is 4.97.

• Average GPA of Dhaka division in SSC examination is 4.98

• Average GPA of Chittagong division in SSC examination is 4.97

• Average GPA of Rangpur division in SSC examination is 4.94

• Average GPA of Khulna division in SSC examination is 4.94

After the calculation we found:

• Average GPA of HSC examination of the 17th batch finance students is 4.96.

• Average GPA of Dhaka division in SSC examination is 4.97

• Average GPA of Chittagong division in SSC examination is 4.99

• Average GPA of Rangpur division in SSC examination is 4.95

• Average GPA of Khulna division in SSC examination is 4.85

Students’ Religion:

• 93% (28 students out of 30) of the students are Muslims.

• 7% (2 students out of 30) of the students are Hindu.

Percentage of students having computer facilities:

In our survey we found that:

• 87% (26 students out of 30) of the students enjoy computer facilities.

• 13% (4 students out of 30) of the students do not enjoy computer facilities.

Percentage of Students being on Facebook:

In our survey we found that:

• 63% (19 students out of 30) of the students are on facebook.

• 37% (11 students out of 30) of the students are not on facebook.

Students’ Satisfaction with the facilities provided by the varsity:

• 33% (20 students out of 30) of the students are satisfied with the facilities provided by the varsity.

• 67% (10 students out of 30) of the students are not satisfied with the facilities provided by the varsity.

Percentage of students who want to settle abroad in future:

• 86% (26 students out of 30) of the students want to settle abroad in future

• 14% (4 students out of 30) of the students don’t want to settle abroad in future.

4.1 Findings:

After the study we found that:

• Most of the students of the finance department are from the Dhaka division

• Average GPA in SSC & HSC of Dhaka division is also Higher than most other divisions

• A large number of students are not satisfied with the facilities provided by the varsity

• A large number of students want to settle abroad in future

4.2 Policy Implication:

We can suggest some policies to be implied:

• Education of the division other than Dhaka should be developed so that they can keep pace with the education of Dhaka.

• Different facilities provided by the varsity should be developed

• Government should take all necessary steps so that meritorious students can stay and serve the country.

4.3 Conclusion:

We all should try to help the country and our fellow human beings. Our educational system should be developed so that it can create level playing field for every citizen of the republic.

We strongly believe that the finance department of the University of Dhaka has a lot to do for the financial development of the country. So, we should try our bet to serve the nation.
