What are the characteristics of leaders who derailed (failed to perform successfully) and were either dismissed, transferred, opted for early retirement, or simply plateaued with no chance for promotion (according to the Center for Creative Leadership studies, 1983, 1985, 1995)? How do you think your co-workers view you in regard to these characteristics? Be honest in your self-assessment.

One may wonder why the most powerful and successful leaders often meet an unfortunate demise. Are there specific characteristics these types of leaders all exhibit? According to the Center for Creative Leadership, leaders whose careers derailed all exhibited similar characteristic and these traits were the opposite in relation to their counterparts. Logically speaking this is not a surprise, however one is lead to believe that the “nice guy” finishes last especially in the corporate world. However, there was no formula that distinctively proved with 99.9% accuracy this would always be the outcome; simply, that these are the traits each leader in the study had in common. First their emotional stability was volatile, they often experienced angry outburst and they were extremely unpredictable. Similarly, their interpersonal relationships were undermined by their insensitivity to others. Also, the derailed leaders lacked integrity and often stepped on others to get to the top. (Yukl, 2010, p. 198) Clearly it is unfortunate that these leaders work hard and gain unprecedented success, only to have it taken away from them; moreover, their inability to self-reflect and see that their behavior lead to their demise is regrettable. However, they fail to see that with a little humble sincerity they could repent and possibly recover their positions. I believe that my co-workers view me as a benefit to the team.
