In this essay I will be describing the ways in which the Walt Disney Company can be used to demonstrate globalisation. Globalisation is the process by which people, their cultures, money, goods and information can be transferred between countries with few or no barriers. There is many ways in which the Walt Disney Company does this, as will be seen in the paragraphs further on; through theme parks, animations, cruise ships, tour guides and technology. The Disney Company was founded by Walt Disney in 1923, when he moved to California and broke into the animation business.
One key way that Disney can be used to demonstrate globalisation is through some of the earliest animations produced by the company. One example that particularly demonstrates globalisation well is the 1940 ‘Fantasia’ film. This film is significant because it was the first ever film for children that didn’t require numerous translations after it was developed, simply because there were no words. This meant children and adults all around the globe could enjoy this film about a mouse as it transferred through all countries throughout the world. Many of Disney’s other famous films also demonstrate globalisation, because of the fact that they all represent different cultures and have backdrops from places all over the world for example; Africa with the Lion King, Arabia with Aladdin, China with Mulan, England with Peter Pan and many more. This meant everyone who watched these films gained an understanding on the cultures the films were based upon, demonstrating globalisation. Above anything though these films were produced to entertain people as well as educate people as two of Walt Disney’s beliefs were, ‘laughter is America’s most important export’ and ‘I would rather entertain and hope that people learned something than educate people and hope they were entertained’.
