...The definition of a waiting line is a list of consumers who continues to wait to pay for a specific service from a restaurant or other service facilities. The way I see it understanding waiting lines and figuring out how to manage them is one of the most important areas in operation management. In companies or in private life, there are instances of procedures which generates waiting lines or queues. The reason why these waiting lines occur is for the present services facility is inadequate to provide service at that instance. As an examples when people travel by airplanes, I have personal involvements with numerous types of waiting lines or queues. To buy tickets for a movie, I normally have to stand in line at movie theater ticket office. When I arrive at an airport most of the time I stand in line to check baggage, then I stand in line again to get a seat assignment. After that I line up again for the TSA security checkpoint and the again for the last time when waiting to board the plane to scan the boarding passes. I also wait when I am inside the plane, I wait for those ahead of me to take their seats. And finally, we may wait for baggage to arrive and then for ground transportation. I think this quote is very important and says a lot about waiting lines. “Perhaps the biggest influence on our feelings about lines, though, has to do with our perception of fairness. When it comes to lines, the universally acknowledged standard is first come first served: any deviation is, to...

...design manufacturer by innovating and designing new generations of components. They also took the opportunity of opening a plant outside Shenzhen, when the restrictions on investment in mainland china were relaxed by the government. In 2007 AIC Systems decided to get involved in the fast-growing market of mobile technology, specifically ultra-portable laptops. The new netbook market as a competitive market provided an opportunity for AIC Systems to design and manufacture a branded product in the mobile industry. Issues and Solutions Before starting the design and production of motherboard for their new netbook, QuiN, the production manager, Elias Chen, had to select the processor which is going to be used in their netbooks. One option was using the same processor that has been used in ASUS netbooks, and the other option was to wait for the new Intel processor to become available. Chen decided to wait for the new processor and then design a motherboard based on that. I believe this was a wise decision, because AIC Systems was like a new kid on the block in the netbook market, and they could have a lot more chance of finding costumers for their products, if their first generation of netbooks were technologically up-to-date. While designing the new motherboard, Chen established the assembly line. Immediately after that, they started the production in full capacity; 700 netbooks per assembly line per working shift, 2 shifts per day, and 6 days of work per week. If it was me, I wouldn’t...

In my term work I’m going to try describing few first steps in designing the own project of a device. We don’t have the possibility to realise our projects on the hardware, but still I think that the process of imagining its work is already quite exciting : defining the states of working of the device, its principle of work, thinking of the approximate look of the device. I’ve decided to investigate the process...

A Formal Model for Software Project Management. IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering,15(10), 1280-1293. An Old Waterfall The waterfall model is one of the oldest software development processes often cited in project management. It has been over 40 years since it was first formally described by Winston W. Royce. The model was viewed in the same regard as real life waterfalls because of how the model was presented. The development process of the waterfall model is a linear sequential process just like a waterfall flowing from top to bottom. It is very interesting to me, that often at times the waterfall model can also show backward pointing arrows contrary to a true waterfall where once water flows down, it cannot flow back up. This tells me that the original waterfall model was not perfect nor is any other type of project management process. In Royce’s original model he lists six phases in its model: requirements, preliminary designs, interface designs, final designs, testing and integration; before advancing to any following phase it must be verified. This verification can be considered milestones and is used as a tracking mechanism of the progress of the project. The waterfall...

...an opportunity to recall an experience, dwell upon it and evaluate it. As part of the assessment for ‘Service Design and Transformation module’, my group and I had to choose a service that needed change and help to redesign the service by applying approaches such as; Toyota Production System(TPS) , Plan Do Study Act(PDSA), Spaghetti and Value Stream mapping, as we have being taught in lectures. Aims and Objectives: This essay aims to give a reflective account of my contribution to the presentation; how my group and I planned the presentation and how well I worked with the group. All these will be analysed by adopting the Sibbert model. In addition I will briefly discuss the evidence and academic arguments used for my part of the group work, using relevant references. Also, a detailed account of how the formative and summative presentation went will be discussed, and the lessons I learnt through the whole process. Presentation Topic and Reasons for the chosen Topic: In my group we researched a range of topic before narrowing it down to antenatal care. According to Patients Opinion (2010), a patient narrated their experience in an antenatal clinic saying ‘’the waiting times for Antenatal Clinic are horrendous; I waited for my 9:30 appointment for 3 hours. Although the midwife I saw was kind and courteous and apologised’’. Based on all the evidence found during our research, we decided to redesign and improve waiting time in antenatal care by adopting TPS through Lean process...

...Unlimited access to information is good for our society. Information has power to change our lives. In the last century our generation has transformed in to information society. Information has improved quality of our lives, and it has helped us get beyond the problems that trouble our world. During the mid-90’s internet had a revolutionary impact on information, since then information became information technology. Due to information storing, retrieving, transmitting data is much easier. Certainly, it is difficult to estimate the value of information technology in our society. Furthermore, many fields today highly depend on information technology, and it has opened doors to countless career opportunity for our generation. Information technology is bringing the world closer; there are no linguistic and geographical boundaries when it comes to sharing information. World as we know today has transformed in to global village. Information technology allows us to share information more rapidly and efficiently, in fact today we are able to share ideas with countries that are separated by not only distance but also language. Furthermore, information technology has also made communication cheaper and effective. Before internet existed communication solely dependent on postal and telephone services, but today we have text messaging, emails, video conferencing for instantaneous communication. Information technology has also given business around the world new prospective and possibilities...

...Class: Designing and Implementing learning Bags, and their importance for a home school connection in math, science, and reading… Bag Summary Standard 3: Family and Community Engagement sound familiar? How about engagement, collaboration, and communication indicators? Wait let’s not forget about parent/family engagement, learning expectations, curriculum support, two-way communication and finally culturally proficient communication? If you are a public school teacher especially in a system that has lacked funds then these terms, phrases, whatever you would like to call them have been eating at you for at least the past two years. The reason that they have become such a burden is not because we haven’t been providing these things to our students and their families for years upon years, it is because now we have to physically prove we are providing these things to our students and their families. Our word and reputations as being good even great teachers that are constantly visited and revisited by past students isn’t enough for the powers that be (not sure who they are) and our jobs seem to now be forever insecure. Designing and Implementing Learning Bags, and their importance for a home school connection in math, science, and reading couldn’t be any better way of physically showing our good practice as teachers to those who hold us in judgment. Seventh grade social studies covers thousands and thousands of years of history from the beginning of man right up to...

...phone waste. When a new phone comes out or we break our phones we usually just throw them away. This causes a lot of waste in the dumps. There is a cell phone though in the works that I feel will help shape the way we build cell phones and other devices, if it can ever get off the drawing board. Every day we throw away millions of cell phone. The reason we throw them away is because they are out of date or they are broken. The problem with the broken cell phones is that usually it is one piece that is broken that is near impossible to fix. So when the average person finds out just how much it is to fix the phone they usually just buy a new one. That’s where Dave Hakkens comes in. Dave’s idea is simple in theory. Build a phone made up of several exchangeable blocks that connect to the base (the middle of the phone) and the base connects everything together.( Mcnicoll & Article, 2013) The blocks have two pins on one side that allows them to be connected to the base. All this is held together by two screws at the bottom of the phone. By doing this you can extend the life of the cell phone by upgrading the specific block on the phone you want. For example let’s say that your camera broke. Usually you would have to go to your cell phone provider, wait for a rep, file an insurance claim, wait for the new phone to come in the mail, transfer everything over to the new one, and then send the old phone back. That’s if you even have insurance. If you don’t have insurance...

...another. We have long known about ways to mitigate this problem in manufacturing: use of common components, mixed model production lines, finished goods inventory, and designing production so the product differentiating steps are done toward the end of the process so they can be directed by actual customer demand rather than forecast. But service industries suffer from a more difficult problem. Variation in product demand can be buffered by finished goods inventory. But service providers cannot hedge against the possibility of excess volume by stocking capacity in a warehouse. Service industries must maintain the capacity to handle surges in demand. But when the capacity goes unused, it is lost forever. As Henry Ford once said, “Time waste is worse than material waste because there can be no salvage.” While you cannot escape variation in customer demand, you can design effective means to cope with it. First, study the nature of the variation in your business. Use histograms and run charts to understand and quantify the nature and range of the variation and any trending or cycles in the demand. Then evaluate your different options for reducing your vulnerability to demand variation to provide the best service at the least cost. Following are three staffing models for coping with demand variation: longer waits would ensue if specialists were needed to handle most health needs. Generalists, supplemented...

...theory based on observation and scientific study about how people learn .the basic idea about constructivism is that the learner must construct knowledge; the teacher cannot supply it. In the constructivist classroom the teacher must encourage students to use active techniques ,e.g. experiments, real world, problem solving , to create more knowledge and then to reflect on and talk about what they are doing and how their understanding is changing. In constructivist classroom focus shifts from the teacher to the students. In constructivist classroom learning is interactive; teachers have dialogue with students. Knowledge is dynamic and changing with experience in constructivist classroom. Students in constructivist classroom are active and work primarily in group. In constructivist classroom the role of the teacher are changes from “transmitter to facilitator of knowledge”. Constructivist classroom differs from the traditional classroom in the areas like teacher, student and learning situation etc. Key words: Learning Environment, Constructivist Classroom and Traditional Classroom....

...Chapter 2 Winning Customers and Competing Effectively 1. The five internal performance objectives analysed further by Neely (2008) are cost, quality, flexibility, dependability and speed. 2. Value added is an activity carried out by an organization that increases the worth of a product or service and for which a customer is willing to pay an additional price. An example would be the provision of 'Fairtrade' or organic foods where there is a perceived ethical and social benefit which customers are prepared to pay for. 3. The ability to change a product or service offering to suit customers' needs is called flexibility. 4. The ability of an organization to consistently meet its promises to the customer is called dependability. 5. Designing a set of sales and profit targets for a particular product is known as category management which is a strategic management approach through trade partnerships to satisfy consumer and shoppers' needs. 6. Consumer market segmentation can be divided into four categories, geographic, demographic, behavioural and psychographic. Chapter 3 Operations Processes and Life Cycles 1. In the craft era the 3 types of operations process were job shop, batch process and simple project. 2. In the mass production era the 4 types of operations process were complex project, batch production, assembly line and continuous flow process. 3. In a materials processing operation, the process which is associated with the highest variety is the project process...

... The employees of the company had a routine way of doing things and they did not like a change. This was a clear indication of a company with employees whose vision is low whose believes were based on their powers and not the goals of the organization. The company headed by the John Compton has members of staff whose working system is corrupted. They all feared that they could lose their powers and responsibility if they implement the enterprise project management methodology (Berkun, 2008). This made the executive staffs even after being assigned the work of designing a project management methodology they feel their work threatened by the change since they knew there was a requirement of a project manager office to be established and that would translate to the project manager taking some of their responsibilities. Therefore the reason that made the executive staffs wait for so long to implement the enterprise project management methodology was because of the culture of the company (Tonnquist, 2009). The first thing is that the project manager’s office should be in a centralized place for easier accessibility to and by the other offices. This will again reduce the overlapping of functions in the company. The project manager should report to the chief Information officer because the chief information officer understands the organization clearly and will be in a position to assess and handle any technical issue and risk of the project at hand...
