The Matrix and the Hero's Journey

...of Ideas In 1999, the year it came out, the movie “The Matrix” directed by the Wachovski brothers was considered by many as one of the best action movies in the film industry in decades. It was understandable after the success it had at the box office, and its success among viewers, which was not only local but global also. The structure of the journey of the hero, Neo, is nothing new. In fact, it starts and it ends like all the other journeys that preceded it, with the advantage of being rich in thought-provoking themes in comparison to the other movies of the genre. In order to help in the development of those themes, the Wachovski brothers use a lot of allusions, references from religions, myths, philosophy, literature, without changing the pattern of their hero’s journey which is clearly the same as the one represented in Joseph Campbell’s hero’s journey. Using the latter, it would possible to understand the use of certain figures of imagery, camera movements, and other tools by the Washovski brothers in the making of this film. 1- Departure Just like any other hero’s journey, the story of the matrix starts with the departure, which is comprised of five steps: a) The call to adventure b) Refusal of the Call Fotso 2 c) Supernatural Aid d) The Crossing of the first threshold e) The Belly of the Whale During this first stage of the journey, the hero has to separate from the world he knows, and in the movie “The Matrix” there are lots of symbols, motifs with connections to...

The possible success of the future market for EVs is based on how much of EVs’ value can be perceived by their potential customers. Thus, research on customer perceived value (CPV) of EVs can help us, and especially EV manufacturers, understand the main factors contributing to CPV and how to design suitable EVs that can yield higher CPV. This paper first constructs a multi-scale model for the measurement of CPV based on surveys conducted at Shanghai, China. Then, the decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory method is applied to evaluate the importance of every scale and depict the internal relations among different scales on the impact-relations map (IRM). Further, a novel version of the house of quality is created to conduct technical feasibility analysis for the improvement of each scale. Finally, market segmentation for EV industry is proposed and discussed based on the analysis...

Structures in Business

...structure is the divisional approach. As opposed to the functional way, there are several teams across the same level that works on their own single product or service. Each of these teams has their own leader or manager. Pros of the divisional approach allow teams to be more focused on their own product or service. This allows them to be flexible and more reactive to changes (Daft, 2013. P. 320). Cons of this structure include higher overhead since it takes more employees to make up the teams and there may be a rivalry between teams due to competition. 3. The matrix is a combination of both functional and divisional (Daft, 2013 p. 321). There may be multiple higher leaders that manage different teams. These leaders report to higher supervisors. The matrix can be very effective since it can be flexible in a rapidly changing world. Teams work better together and have broader responsibilities. The downside to a matrix approach is that it may be more difficult to manage. This approach is very much decentralized, not hierarchical like the others. 4. Recent...

Questionnaire on Mobile Operator

...CHAPTER ONE 1.1 INTRODUCTION A casual look at the published empirical work in business and econometric will reveal that many economic relationships are of single –equation type. In such models, one variable (the dependent variable Y) is expressed as a linear function of one or more other variables (the explanatory variables, the X’s). An implicit assumption is that the cause and effect relationship, if any , between Y and X’s is unidirectional. The explanatory variables are the cause and the dependent variable is the effect . However, there are situations where there is a two- way or simultaneous relationships between Y and some of the X’s which makes the distinction between the dependent and the explanatory variables of dubious value. It is better to lump together a set of variables that can be determined simultaneously by the remaining set of variables- precisely what is done in simultaneous equation models. In such models, there is more than one equation - one for each of the mutually or jointly dependent or endogenous variables. And unlike the single equation models, in the simultaneous equation models, one may estimate the parameters of a single equation without taking into account information provided by the other equation in the system. In a simultaneous equation system, variables that appear only on the right – hand side of the equation are called exogenous or predetermined variables. They are truly independent or non-stochastic because they remain fixed. Variables...

Pan-Europa Foods Case Analysis

...Pan-Europa Foods Case Analysis Executive Summary Pan Europa foods is a European producer of yogurt, ice cream, bottled water, and fruit juice. With stagnant gross sales and decreasing stock value, the company needs to increase its net income and increase confidence in its shareholders to avoid a takeover. With this in mind, the company decides to allocate $80 million Euros out of its $656 million asset base to capital spending in investment projects. There are currently 11 proposals on the table totaling $208 million from which the Senior Management Committee must choose from. Currently the company has two financial measures to determine if projects are economically sufficient for the firm, minimum acceptable IRR and maximum acceptable payback years. Considering these and other non-quantitative tools, the management committee will decide between these 11 projects proposed by various upper level managers within the firm. 1.) Strategically, in order for Pan Europa foods to not become victim of a hostile takeover, it must take steps to increase their stock price. In order to do so, they have to focus on becoming more profitable, which would mean increasing their sales and gaining more market share. Critically Important Categories in Exhibit 2: * Net Income * Earnings per Share * Market Value of Shareholder’s Equity After winning the price war, Pan Europa foods made serious gains in their market share. After doing so, it should now be time...

Realities Two Way Street

...Realities Two-Way Street Ignorance is bliss. This phrase, however comforting, is a provocative statement to the debilitating state of society and the human state of mind; the dual-edged comment is represented in both Plato’s Allegory of the Cave and the Wachoski brother’s The Matrix through universes, similar to our own, where people are in strong states of illusion and ignorance. Both have a character, which is brought to the “light” to realize this false reality and to liberate everyone else to a better reality, the “real” reality. Situations can arise where having knowledge of it can seem detrimental, however, our very existence as human beings is to live a life of bettering ourselves and the species in general through knowledge both good and bad, and the actions that take place from knowledge. People do actions and make decisions based on history from what he has done wrong or from what he has done correctly and on this basis it is a stepping stone that either good or bad having knowledge of the past, complete knowledge, helps to mold the future positively. Although blissful, avoiding reality will never be a positive action with even in modern days something such as Facebook has become our matrix keeping people away from the outside, not personally and physically interacting with others or now having games that are virtually realities allowing someone to be something else but does not benefit the world in any way. The lack of benefit world is where virtual reality does its...

...* 1 Lesson: Linear Models and the Distributive Property Write an Expression Using the Distributive Property over Multiplication Some expressions representing real-world situations can be easily written in the form [[ a bx+c ]]. When solving problems with expressions written in this form, you will use the distributive property over multiplication. Example: You and your friend are selling raffle tickets for the local rotary club. Tickets are sold for $2 each. Your friend has already sold 100 tickets, and you are going to sell the remaining tickets. Write an expression for the total amount made from raffle ticket sales. In this problem, you are comparing two quantities: the number of tickets that you sell and the total amount of money made from ticket sales. In the first row of the table, write the column headings to describe the two quantities. The number of tickets that you sell is measured in tickets and the total amount of money made from ticket sales is measured in dollars. In the second row of the table, write the units used to measure each quantity. The problem states that the tickets are sold for $2 each and your friend has already sold 100 tickets. Use a variable, such as [[x ]], to represent the number of tickets that you sell. You can determine the total amount of money made from ticket sales by multiplying the total number of tickets sold, [[100+x ]], by the cost of each ticket, 2. The expression [[ 2100+x ]] represents the total amount of money made from ticket...
