2. he concept of quality as we think of it now first emerged out of the Industrial Revolution. Previously goods had been made from start to finish by the same person or team of people, with handcrafting and tweaking the product to meet 'quality criteria'. Mass production brought huge teams of people together to work on specific stages of production where one person would not necessarily complete a product from start to finish. In the late 1800s pioneers such as Frederick Winslow Taylor and Henry Ford recognized the limitations of the methods being used in mass production at the time and the subsequent varying quality of output. Taylor established Quality Departments to oversee the quality of production and rectifying of errors, and Ford emphasized standardization of design and component standards to ensure a standard product was produced. Management of quality was the responsibility of the Quality department and was implemented by Inspection of product output to 'catch' defects.
3.
Policies and procedures are a set of documents that describe an organization's policies for operation and the procedures necessary to fulfil the policies. They are often initiated because of some external requirement, such as environmental compliance or other governmental regulations, such as the American Sarbanes-Oxley Act requiring full openness in accounting practices. The easiest way to start writing policies and procedures is to interview the users of the policies and procedures and create a flow chart or task map or work flow of the process from start to finish. This information can then be represented in a written format. The policy users can then review this and confirm that the written word matches the flow chart. Finally, a thoroughly edited version can be submitted to management for approval.

...Top 10 reasons for ERP Implementation failures: 1. Doing it in the first place. Even before implementation the company is dilemma whether they really require it or not. Often large ERP implementation projects fail before they even start. Companies unhappy with their current system become convinced their reporting, integration, or efficiency problems lie in the software they are using. Convinced the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, they embark on a large, risky, and expensive ERP replacement project, when a simple tune-up of their current system, or a small add-on application, such as a better reporting system or employee portal, would address the problem at a fraction of the cost. Even a reimplementation of the same software is usually less costly than switching to another software vendor. 2. No clear destination. To be clear with the expectations. Once an organization makes the decision to implement a new ERP system, the first step is to have a clear definition of success. Often, lack of consensus on the problems being solved, the outcome desired, or the specific financial justification of the project, leads to challenges later controlling the scope and maintaining executive sponsorship. Having a clear destination means defining the important business processes, financial benefits, and deadlines up front and making certain stakeholders agree how to address them. Without a strong definition of success, the end point becomes a moving target. 3. A good plan...

...Year 10 Revision Timelines: The Roaring Twenties Women Before First World War * Women could not vote. * Middle/upper class women did not work but had the role of mothers and housewives. Working class women had low paid jobs such as factory work and cleaning. * Women usually wore full length dresses, wore no make up and had their hair tied back in buns. * Divorce was very rare and so was sex before marriage. * Women did not smoke or drink in public. * They had to go out with a chaperone (a family member) when they met their boyfriend. How did the First World War change the lives of women? * During the war, women began to work in areas like heavy industry. They proved they could work as well as men. By 1929, there were 10 million women workers; a rise of 24% since 1920. * Working gave women independence and they began smoking and drinking in public. * Women were given the vote in August 1920 but few were chosen to be actual politicians. * Production of consumer goods such as vacuum cleaners and washing machines meant women had more time for leisure activities. * Flappers emerged in the 1920’s = women from middle and upper class families from the Northern States. They cut their hair in short bobs, wore make up, short skirts and bright clothes. They also smoked and drank in public, went to speakeasies, danced the Charleston with men and listened to Jazz and drove cars and motorbikes. * BUT many groups, particularly...

...VENTURE CAPITAL -- AN OVERVIEW OF THE BASIC ISSUES AND CHALLENGES FOR ENTREPRENEURS A NETPRENEUR.ORG SPECIAL REPORT AUGUST 2001 PREPARED BY: ANDREW J. SHERMAN, ESQ. ANDREW J. SHERMAN, ESQ. MCDERMOTT, WILL & EMERY 600 13TH STREET, N.W. WASHINGTON, D.C. 20005 (202) 756-8610 (202) 756-8087 (FAX) AJSHERMAN@MWE.COM (E-MAIL) WDC99 474195-1.T06139.0012 INTRODUCTION At several recent Netpreneur.org Coffee & DoughNuts events, including the May 23rd program on Ratchets, Cramdowns and Other Scary Venture Capital Terms as well as the recent Startup.com film event on July 17th, many members of our Netpreneur community posed questions on the fundamentals of structuring venture capital transactions, including many that time prevented the panel from addressing. Clearly there is a lot of interest in this topic among our region's technology entrepreneurs, but there is also a lot of confusion. Rather than deal directly with the dozens of specific questions posed at these two events, this Netpreneur.org special report will provide an overview of some case concepts which I hope will be helpful to you in the growth and financing of your business. OVERVIEW AND HISTORY OF VENTURE CAPITAL Today's institutional venture capital industry has its roots at the turn of the twentieth century, when wealthy families like the Rockefellers and DuPonts provided risk capital to small growing companies. Following World War II, a few institutional venture capital companies were formed, the most...
