There is no one definition for discord; several therapist, psychologist, and specialist define it differently. At some point, all families and all marriages will have discord. A family or marriage without discord at all would be so out of the norm. A family must be looked at as an institution in order to understand treating family discord (Groves & Ogburn, 78). A family is the only institution where everyone is allowed to express their satisfactions and dissatisfactions with the other members (Groves & Ogburn, 78). No other institution is ran and operated like a family. A family is the dumping ground for all sorts of grievances, meaning people within the family can deal with things outside and express the issues within the household. What happened to one member of the family may have had a horrible day at work, because they cannot express their discontent with their boss, they may come home and lash out negatively at the other family members. The family members who are being lashed out on will respond in a negative way. These types of incidents are what create discord. The family as an institution suffers and deals with things that it was not initially responsible for (Groves & Ogburn, 78). There are two types of discord, one focuses on the discharge of personal maladjustments that are caused by the outside activities of life. This discord is caused when someone within the family institution relieves his or her stress of the outside world. When outside experiences occur at a social gathering or a place of employment, the ability to be able to speak out about the terrible day reduces the strain on the members of the family (Groves & Ogburn, 79). Even though this reduces stress for the person as an individual, it harms the family. Troubles are forced on the family that it did cause.
