DIMENSIONING OF OPTICAL NETWORK ARCHITECTURES

ABSTRACT

Optical backbone networks have been promoted as potentially low cost solutions for transporting very high bandwidth traffic. In this project, we developed an automated program which is implemented as a plug-in for the existing Aurora 2008 software that can dimension an optical circuit switched network for any country across the globe given the constraints on the capacities of various optical network elements and the country’s statistical information. The output of this dimensioning algorithm is the number of nodes (i.e. number of switching elements, routers etc.), their interconnection topology with or without grooming schemes depending on the user’s needs. We display the results of this dimensioning algorithm using the statistical information of Australia. This plug-in can be used by telecom operators for designing cost-effective network architectures. This algorithm can also help them to devise an architectural roadmap to design futuristic optical network architectures.

INTRODUCTION

Continuous research is being done on ways to provide more bandwidth per user, improving the speed of connection and in many other areas to further improve the internet. It has been observed that the internet traffic is doubling every four to six months [1]. One way to provide greater access speed is by the implementation of high-capacity optical networks.
