...GOLF BALLS The design and aerodynamics of a golf ball is very interesting. I've always wondered why a golf ball has all those little dimples on it (I just thought it was for the look) but never took the time to read about it until now. About 600 years ago someone realized that an older, rougher ball performed better than a new smoother ball, thus the evolution of dimples. In the last 150 years, research and tests have been conducted to see if the performance of the golf ball could be enhanced. Research found through wind tunnels and an indoor test range that, on a smooth ball the airflow separates from the ball at 80 degrees from the direction of flight (more to the front of the ball). This in turn creates a large turbulent flow (low pressure area) at the rear of the ball creating unwanted drag. The same tests were conducted on golf balls with dimples, showing that the dimples create surface turbulence, which increases the energy to the airflow along the surface of the ball. This makes the airflow separate at 110 degrees from the direction of flight (more to the rear of the ball), thus in turn creating a smaller turbulent flow (low pressure area) at the rear of the ball creating less drag. ...Aerodynamics in Cycling Aerodynamics has become enormously important in bicycle road racing, even more than weight. Bikes are so light these days that it is not unusual to add weights just to get them up to the required minimum weights. Wind tunnel testing is used extensively both in manufacturing and training. Manufacturers test bikes and components in order to reduce drag. One trend in recent years that I find counter intuitive is wider wheels. Newer rims sometimes have a cross section similar to an airfoil, wide in the front and tapering towards the back, or inside of the wheel. They have also added dimples similar to golf ball dimples. In general, most tube cross sections are now being stretched out to an airfoil like shape. Each little thing does not change much, but put together they can make a huge impact on the effort the rider has to put out in the end. A team manager needs to know how to balance many factors such as aerodynamics, weight, cooling, and strength amongst others. As an example for a race with many steep climbs, aerodynamics is less important than weight and cooling for the rider. It was very interesting to see the vast changes in what was considered a sexy look for a woman. As I looked at my body in the mirror, I only noticed a small amount of my body that I personally found to be sexy. My eyes are sexy because of their different color; green and yellow. My eyes are green and have a yellow sunburst around the pupil, which a lot of people do not have, so other people tend to comment on how pretty my eyes are which makes me feel attractive.
