Direct the Rider, Motivate the Elephant and Shape the Path. These are the three main topics the authors, Chip and Dan Heath, used to explain the psychological way of implementing change in an organization and life. As college graduates and elite scholars in the academic world, these authors provide insight to a big problem in the business world: change. In the Switch, the authors use scenarios that are compelling and are easily understood as to why situations did not work one way but worked another. The research and development of their book emphasizes their theoretical framework as to why people react they way that they do when approached with a situation. It also explains how everyone in a given situation plays a vital role in the change. …show more content…
However, there were a couple of instances where they created a little bit of controversy. The first controversial statement that the authors made was toward the end of the Shape the Path portion of the framework, they were providing insight on how to keep the thought of successful change going. They used an example of a monkey trainer who used small pieces of mangos to reward good actions. These small actions would lead to a greater action because of the small rewards that were received. Then later in the chapter the authors tell you to be more reserved with the mangos when it came to your bosses and your team. These two scenarios contradict themselves and are a little confusing because they tell you to reinforce good actions, but do not do it as much when it comes to your team or your boss. What makes them different? The second one was about the bright spots and how they are the best to approach with no sufficient back up stated in the book. They provide scenarios but they did not provide any statistical research backing up their point that bright spots are the best places to go in times of change. It is a guessing game to believe that their ways are the best ways. Yes, they worked in the short run but in the long run there are no

Bright Spot Summary

...Summary of Chip Health and Dan Health’s “Finding the Bright Spot” In the chapter “Find the Bright Spots” taken from the book Switch: How to change thing when change is hard, the authors state that: when changing things, there’re bright spots in your field. You need to direct your followers- the Riders by following these bright spots and make the Elephants’ expect that change is possible and the Path is clear. In 1990, Jerry Sternin came to Vietnam to fight malnutrition with barely support from the government. Firstly, his team found that there were a lot of problems such as poor sanitization, poverty, out of clean water. However, in six months and almost no money, solving these problems became useless. After weighting, Jerry found that there were healthy and well-nourished kids despite their poor families. There were his bright spots. Besides that, he directed the mother’s Riders to shadow the bright spots’ mothers. Uniquely, these kids ate four times instead of twice a day, parents fed kids by hands, or mixing rice with small shrimp, crab and sweet potato green provided vitamin and protein for the kids. Because knowledge couldn’t guide the villagers, Jerry created cooking classes at the bright spots’ houses, provided detailed instructions to the mother’s Riders. Gradually, more mothers followed and this made the mothers’ Elephants believe in making their kids healthier. Six months later, 65 percent of the kids became healthier. Bright spots exist in every...

Transit Price Elasticities and Cross-Elasticities

...www.vtpi.org Info@vtpi.org 250-360-1560 Transit Price Elasticities and Cross-Elasticities 25 May 2012 Todd Litman Victoria Transport Policy Institute Abstract This paper summarizes price elasticities and cross elasticities for use in public transit planning. It describes how elasticities are used, and summarizes previous research on transit elasticities. Commonly used transit elasticity values are largely based on studies of short- and medium-run impacts performed decades ago when real incomes where lower and a larger portion of the population was transit dependent. As a result, they tend to be lower than appropriate to model long-run impacts. Analysis based on these elasticity values tends to understate the potential of transit fare reductions and service improvements to reduce problems such as traffic congestion and vehicle pollution, and understate the long-term negative impacts that fare increases and service cuts will have on transit ridership, transit revenue, traffic congestion and pollution emissions. ...Chapter 8 Producer and Consumer Surplus consumer surplus — the value the consumer gets from buying a product less its price. producer surplus — the price the producer sells a product for less the cost of producing it. Burden of Taxation A tax paid by the supplier shifts the supply curve up by the amount of the tax. The loss of consumer and producer surplus from a tax is known as deadweight loss . Deadweight loss is shown graphically by the welfare loss triangle — a geometric representation of the welfare cost in terms of misallocated resources caused by a deviation from a supply/demand equilibrium. The cost of taxation includes the direct cost of revenue paid, lost surplus, and administrative cost. Interestingly, in terms of aesthetics, people have come to like the style of Paris roofs; it is one of the many things that makes Paris distinct. Including aesthetics complicates the analysis enormously. Economic reasoning is based on the architectural view that form follows function. Who Bears the Burden of a Tax? Taxes are like hot potatoes: Everyone wants to pass them on to someone else. Nobody wants to pay taxes, and there are usually large political fights about whom government should tax. For example, should the Social Security tax (mandated by the Federal Insurance Contributions Act, or FICA) be placed on workers or on the company that hires them? The supply/demand framework gives an unexpected answer to this question. Burden Depends on Relative Elasticity ...

Transmedia Storytelling and Game of Thrones

...Dmitry Lovket, 01.04.2014 Foreword Castles, knights, dragons, battles and even newly-invented language – all these features are typically attributed with storyworlds created in the tradition of J. R. R. Tolkien. George R. R. Martin not only shares the initials with the author of The Lord of the Rings, but with A Song of Ice and Fire, has created a series of books that received enthusiastic reviews from critics and readers all over the world, nominating him the unofficial title of ―American Tolkien‖ [9]. In 2007 Martin agreed to collaborate with cable network HBO‘s writer-producers David Banioff and Daniel B. Weiss on the adaptation of his epic novel series to TV under the name Game of Thrones (GoT) [14]. Its narrative features the medieval fantasy world of Westeros, in which five noble families struggle to seize the all governing Iron Throne, and, with a complete broadcast of three seasons, the result has led TV critics to hail the show as one of the pinnacles of quality television narrative [21]. The show has also obtained an exceptionally broad and international fandom. The series has won numerous awards and nominations. It is the most recent big-budget media franchise to have contributed to the popularity of epic fantasy genre in mainstream TV. This essay will analyze the transmedia storytelling strategies applied to promote the TV series Game of Thrones. Transmedia storytelling is understood as a story told throughout numerous media platforms, with special...
