Main Purpose

The main purpose of the article, disrupting the Status Quo, is to begin addressing the argument of the leadership preparation of an Educational Doctorate program versus a traditional Physical Doctorate program. It is said that the EdD program bases most of its focus on building leaders through research while the PhD program focuses on more of theoretical research. In reading the article, Building an Ethical School: A practical response to the moral crisis is in schools, the basis is laid that educational leaders must learn to reflect on the how of policies and practices. The article laid the groundwork in support that the EdD program gives a leader the opportunity to think, react and relate to real world scenarios based on their research.

The Key Questions

The question that is ultimately posed in looking at the programs side by side is which program will build the leaders that the future will need? Which program will equip these leaders with the tools they need to become successful and productive? How can educational leaders increase student learning, and how can they foster equity in educational outcomes?

Important information

Today’s leaders are very different than what they were in the past, and what they will evolve into for the future. (Levine, 2005). Leaders today are people who can rely on policies but also fall back on theory and have a strong basis in experience. The author describes the quality practitioner and shows how various theories lend themselves to this concept. The author also explains why the EdD is a more appropriate degree for the quality practitioner. He explains that the students of educational leadership experience the application of action research methods to change some aspect of the own organization as they learn how theory inter relates with practice (Grogan,2005, p1).

EdD and PhD

The EdD has evolved to combine the research portion with the practical part of research where the PhD has always been designed for professionals who enjoy dedicating the majority of they time to research. The EdD has balanced research with quality action and application. (Brown, 2006). The EdD program was designed to create leaders that defy the status quo. The author infers that the EdD program will transform leaders who are not only well versed in research but also highly trained based on experience.

Personal note

I chose the EdD program based on my experience in the educational sector. There have been many occasions that I have worked closely with PhD’s and they are unable to convey their own ideas to administration and more importantly, students. They rely on the theories and the research, and lack the experience and practical understanding. Throughout my education, I have always found more quality in my learning if it were based on experience, and have found through my experience as an administrator, that many students benefit from this pedagogy as well.
