Ditching School In the late 70’s my father became ill and was unable to work. As a result, we lost our home in Los Angeles and had to move to a rental home in the neighboring city of Compton. Our neighborhood in Los Angeles was multi cultural. We had a mixture of Spanish, German, and African Americans living in our neighborhood. We were true neighbors in the sense of, all the kids in the neighborhood would go to store for Mrs. Mueller. She was from Germany and was an elderly widow. Back then you could borrow a cup a sugar from your neighbor. We took great care of each other and it was a real community. One of the saddest days of my life was moving from this community. Moving to Compton was a complete culture shock for our family. Don’t get me wrong, there are very nice areas of Compton that the media always fail to highlight. However, where we moved was not one of them. This new neighborhood was a little run down in appearance and it was predominately black. There is nothing wrong with living around my culture but in this neighbor we had the same skin color but not the same values. My first few weeks of attending a new school and attempting to make new friends was horrendous. I quickly gained the nickname “Oreo cookie” among the kids. And was asked very

Frequently, why do I talk like a white girl? I was confused. I didn’t understand what talking like a white girl meant. These kids were strange and mean. I really missed my friends in Los Angeles but I kept that to myself. I knew my Dad and Mom were going through tough times and didn’t need to know how bad school had become for me. I finally met a girl named Maryann. She seemed like a nice girl and she did not make fun of my speech. She would say the kids were just jealous because I was smart. We began to hang out together after school and became close friends. As our friendship grew, I noticed that Maryann was absent from school at least once a week. It was always on random days and I became curious to the reasons behind the absence. I finally mustered the courage to ask her. She said sometimes she likes to take the RTD bus to the shopping district in downtown Los Angeles. I was shocked. Taking the bus downtown! I ask her if that was skipping school? She replied yes, but its fun, she had done it plenty of times, and she has never been caught. My initial thoughts were skipping school is a dumb idea. Especially taking the bus to downtown Los Angeles. She asks if I would like to go next week. My reply was a big, fat no. I thought it was dangerous and could get us in a late of trouble. Maryann did not bring the subject up again for a few more weeks. However, I did notice she was hanging around a girl named Cynthia more at lunch time than with me. When I joined them at the lunch table they were talking about their latest trip downtown. I became concerned that I was losing the one friend that didn’t call me names and was nice to hang around. So against my better judgement I agreed to ditch school the following Tuesday and go downtown. Turner 3 We met at the bus stop at 7:45 am on a bright and sunny morning. Cynthia wasn’t feeling well. So it was just Maryann and me. I have to admit I was a little excited but scared too. It was an hour bus ride and we talked all the way. I had bought money incase I saw an outfit I liked. Finally, the bus made it to our stop. Something told me to stay on the bus and ride it back to school but I did not want to disappoint Maryann. I swallowed my fear and exited the bus with her. I promise you we only walked a few steps down 1st Street when we were approached by two plain clothes detention officers. They showed us their badge and ask where was our parents? I answered my parents were at home. Then came the dreaded questions. They wanted to know if we were skipping school. So much for never getting caught. I answered yes. They placed us in the back of their car and transported us to a youth detention center.
Needless to say, our parents were contacted and had to come retrieve the two school ditchers from detention. My mom was furious. When she walked in that place I could feel the fire of hell burning through her. This was not going to go well for me. Especially because she had to ride a bus for an hour to pick me up. I was supposed to be in school not downtown. Her first questions was what was I thinking? Didn’t I know how dangerous it was for young girls running around town by themselves? I began to cry. When the tears were all gone I explained about my situation at school. The kids called me Oreo cookie. They believed I talked funny and act like a white girl. I only went to keep Maryann as my friend. And yes, I did know it was dangerous but I took that chance to keep a friendship. My said mom she knew the move had been hard for the family but it did not
Turner 4 give me the right to make dangerous decisions. She also said I had enough brothers and sisters to have friends until the end of my days. I didn’t escape the spanking but I did learn a valuable lesson. Life is made of choices. Chose to do what is right no matter the outcome.

...my own.  During my freshman year, I felt like a new recruit. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I had no inkling about the people I would meet, or the enemies I would make. No indication that success meant having to study every night. No clue that my faith would be tested in every way possible. Not even the slightest notion that the people I love most would be the people I would soon be pushing away. I didn’t expect to be so tired and worn out. Waking up at ridiculous hours of the morning; the foolish acts the school cast upon us, like weekly and sometimes daily metal detector checks. Honestly, I did not know what to expect, but it was nothing close to what I could have ever envisioned. The outrageous rules, and indescribably rude, not just students but teachers. After going through “Hell and High water,” education soon meant nothing to me. I thought my dream of becoming an obstetrician could be reached by skipping class and “ditching” after-school band practice. I soon, however, realized I was completely...

The Life of a Rat

...met a girl, who I thought was my friend, named Megan. By the end of the first semester, I had dropped out of volleyball, glee club and had started ditching classes and smoking in the restroom. One day we heard the band was out on a field trip so we went to their personal bathroom to smoke and hang out, just the two of us. Turns out, she wanted to be nosy. She started going through the teacher’s desk and papers. I admit I took a cool looking pen from his desk. We were laughing and playing around. Megan opened a file cabinet drawer and pulled out an envelope, full of money. The band had been having car washes and other fundraisers to raise money. I felt a lump in my throat. I knew what was happening, and I couldn’t stop it. She put the envelope in her shirt and ran back to the bathroom. I had no idea how much was in it, and a part of me did not want to know. Locking the door behind us, Megan reached in the envelope and pulled a small amount out and shoved it in my hand and said, “Here, now, do not say a word and no one will ever know it was us.” I had such an uneasy feeling, about all of it. The bell rang and we went to our lockers and then to lunch. With the money (which was only $120, but back then was like having $1,000 when you’re that young) in my sock the intercom came on and was telling us to all head to the gym. The whole school was in there. The principal announced the very thing I was dreading, “Someone has robbed the band room.” I sank so low I thought I was going to...

Romance Story

...me, who was I kidding? Looking back now I can understand Rebecca. There was no doubt about it, I was an easy target. If I'm going to put the blame on anyone I'll put it on my parents. First of all, they should have known that my mothers predominant nose and my fathers wide jaw would combine to make a very unattractive baby. They should have considered this before having children. Secondly, they should have prepared me for the bullies, the torment, and the suffering I would be endured to during my teenage years. And thirdly, surely my parents could predict that my appearance alone would cause me enough problems, so why oh why did they make me join the homework club? Along with all of the other oppressed pre pubescent geeks I stayed in school two hours longer than the others, to learn nothing more than how important it was to date my page and rule my margin, every day for a year. Luckily it was cancelled after my first year due to the high number suicide attempts by members of the group. Yes, it was that bad. But, not as bad as Rebecca. Being ugly has caused me a lot of...

Eating Habits and Academic Performance of Hrm Students

...On becoming a teacher… By Mary Ann C. Dela Cruz Looking back to the past, I remember the time when my mother told me that it is time for me to go to school to study. I am excited! I enjoy looking into my new pad, notebooks, pencil, and other things that my mother bought me, especially with my new shoes and uniforms. I told to myself, I will enjoy studying as I will learn new things and meet new friends. And when the first day of school starts, I woke up early, ate my breakfast, took a bath, and wore my new uniform and shoes. In few minutes, I am now ready to go to school. Like my other cousins, we are all excited to go to school and meet my first teacher. That day is so special to me, our teacher taught us to how to greet her and our classmates, introduce ourselves to others, and later, she taught us how to sing, count, and the ABCs. I enjoyed my first day and as days passed, I learned more things and observed my teacher on her next move and what is the next instruction to be given to us. Day by day, our activities are getting harder as more things are new to me. I also noticed the different attitudes of my classmates for some our crying looking for their parent. I am just quiet observing them, but what caught my attention is how our teacher reacts on the situations. How she pampered those little kids crying and how she patiently teaches us. There are times that I am thinking how great she was. It seems that she can not to feel the long hours of teaching...

Administrator and Teacher Interview

...Administrator and Teacher Interview Administrator and Teacher Interview Administration and Teacher Interview I remember sitting in the Principles Office one day during recess unsure of why she would want to meet with me. My knees were knocking, my palms were damp, and you could sense the amount of fear that was present in my body. As Ms. Bagakowski called me into her office she reassured me that this was a friendly visit and not one of discipline. She wanted to ask if I would be okay with moving into a different class because I was struggling in my current class. As I look back now on the experience I understand more of the reasons behind the switch and I also understand the role that both my Teacher and the Principle play in the school. The assignment this week was to interview both an Administrator and a Teacher and compare and contract their roles in the education system. I like that you used a personal example. When I went into Ms. Vance’s office I was quickly reminded of the fear I felt waiting for Ms. Bagakowski. Ms. Vance is the Director for Madison Christian Children’s Center in Phoenix, Arizona. As I began the interview Ms. Vance expressed her passion for children and how she became the director of Madison Christian Children’s Center. It wasn’t until she was mother that she really found her true calling to be a Teacher. She ran her own daycare from him and after her children were old enough to attend Preschool she went to work as a Preschool Assistant...

Education Buissness

...gokul ram, ganesh kumar, gopi, govindhan and gowtham.c GOKUL RAM: Good morning friends, today our topic has education become business now a days? And I agree with it. I was thinking about what teachers and schools and education were all like when I was much younger. I remember teachers who seemed to be on a mission, a sort of crusade to educate, who wanted kids to open their minds to the possibilities around them. They were our counsellors, our mentors, the ones who guided us and listened to our sometimes extremely ridiculous ideas. GANESH KUMAR: Teachers encouraged us and never told us there was anything we couldn’t do. They earned our respect because of their passion for teaching, for the values they inculcated and for the integrity with which they conducted themselves. Were they a different breed? Aren’t there teachers like that anymore? A few of my friends have dedicated their lives to teaching, to illuminating the lives of children who were or are under their care. But I don’t now if there are many others like them out there. Teaching appears to have turned into just another profession. GOWTHAM.C:  Education has become a business – not that ‘business’ is a bad word. Three Cups of Tea

...the world and all the people in it especially those in impoverished countries. I particularly enjoyed how the Balti people influenced Mortenson’s life in such extreme ways. The two prompts that I decided to write on are “Have you ever known anyone like Mortenson” and “Discuss his repeated brushes with failure and how they influence your opinion of Mortensen”. Let me begin by saying Mortenson is an amazing individual. He did something that not many people have the gusto to go through with. He truly loved the Balti people and wanted the make their lives better through education. When I first read this prompt I immediately thought of one of my youth leaders, Cherissa Newton. She hasn’t accomplished anything as substantial as building a school for people in some foreign land. But, she is a social worker who works with underprivileged children each and every day. What Mortenson was on a large scale, helping lots of people all at once, but what Cherissa does is on a small scale, helping individuals over time. She has helped me become a better public speaker and more personable to others. Because of her, I have overcome a lot of my shyness. Cherissa helped me through a lot. Journal Assignment

...Journal Assignment Grand Canyon University UNV 501 For my first article I picked an article entitled A Longitudinal Examination of the Link between Youth Physical Fitness and Academic Achievement. Both authors Rebecca London and Sebastian Castrechini work at Stanford University. They are both interested in knowing if the fitness does help achievement, London has done extensive research in this field. They both work at Stanford University. I selected this article because I am very interested in elementary education, and I am also interested in fitness and sports. This article allowed me to see if there was a correlation between students being fit and how they do in the classroom. This article is considered scholarly because both authors did extensive testing and research for this article. I was glad to find that kids who were fit did better in the classroom. My second article was The Significance of Mathematical Knowledge in teaching elementary methods course: perspectives of mathematics teacher educators. It was co-written by Rina and Dov Zazkis. They wanted to see how math teachers used there knowledge to teach a class. I picked this article since I both enjoy math and I am interested in knowing different ways to teach it. Both authors work at universities in the education field, though D. Zazkis researches mathematics and science education. This is scholarly because they investigated how math teachers taught students. My third article is an article...
