Class Conflict
Based on Marxist theory, a class is defined by the ownership of property. Ones class position is the result to ones relation to the means of production. Using the Marxist theory, there are two main classes of a society. Firstly there is the ruling class, the capitally referred to as bourgeoisie; this class owns the means of production. Secondly there is the producing class; they are referred to as the proletariat. Member of proletariat have nothing to sell but their ability to work either mentally or physically. Since productive activity is very central for human’s existence, bourgeoisie gets a huge control over the society because they are in control of the means of the production. Usually the main purpose of the proletariat class is to either help the bourgeoisie organize for a revolution or to overthrow the current ruling class, and take over. Classes tend to be structurally in conflict. Class conflict usually occurs due to the relationship of power wherever a privet surplus exists. When class conflict occurs the struggle for political power arises. Struggles and conflicts also arise in the different divisions inside the same class due to power and status. (Naiman, 2012, p.64)
In the movie Divergent the societies class division occurs in forms of fractions. In theory the fraction are supposed to be all set up to equally contribute to the society by their different virtues, there is still a class conflict occurring through out the movie. This society evolves through different types of production in which the upper class being Abnegation, the selfless class are trusted to run the government because they are public servants. The main class conflict in the movie arises for political power between Abnegation and Erudite. Erudite believe that they should be the rulers not abnegation.
