Don’t get me wrong I would love to be able to only do one thing at a time but it seems to be impossible with what all I have to deal with and do in a days’ time. I am willing to try to learn it all over again but chances are I will have to practice when the kids are not home so I do not get distracted. The other thing is I need to not watch tv when I am doing other tasks or even doing homework. I often feel anxious about things and worry too much about outcomes. I sometimes feel unlucky or things never go right. She continues on with fulfilling their needs as she tries to get dressed for work and maybe spend a few minutes with her husband before he’s out the door and she’s left to get the boys ready for daycare. Everyone’s loaded and ready to go but Jessica forgot she needs to stop and get gas. Now running late she drops the kids off and is finally on her way to a long day in the office. Arriving only a few minutes late has her left with a bit of confidence but that suddenly fades as she catches sight of all the paperwork on her desk. The note on top reads “Must be done TODAY!” Jessica suddenly feels her heart sink and she sits in frustration. There’s no way this can all be done before the daycare closes at six and her husband works in the next town. He wouldn’t be able to pick up the boys either. She has already asked her boss for far too many favors and missed some days when the baby was sick. Her company doesn’t have any flexibility. If she doesn’t fulfill this task her job could be at stake (Hendrickson, 2014). Stories like Jessica’s are all too common and a flexible work schedule just might be the answer to these problems. The beginning chapter presents a detailed background of the study conducted among a group of secondary schools pupils in The Netherlands. The study focuses on new Media and whether its’ usage has any effect on academic performance. This is explored from the context of HAVO Dutch youths in Rotterdam aged 14-16 years in two schools; Calvijn and Comenius colleges particularly from their peer solidarity and socialization processes. HAVO is one of the four streams of secondary education in Holland referred to as Senior general secondary education (HAVO). The stream takes five years and qualifies students to enter higher vocational education (HBO). Some students can also choose to enter pre-university secondary education VWO or MBO education (Dutch Education Journal, 2007). The analysis is based on both qualitative and quantitative findings from Focus Group Discussions (FDGs), structured and semistructured interviews, drawings, observations and questionnaires. This study considers both the advantages and disadvantages of youth engagement in new media. The study also attempt to contribute to the wider development discourses in the field of children and youth.
