Do we really need college?;
A view on the importance of college

“Almost 90% of respondents to one survey thought that a college education is as important today as a high school education used to be … “ ( Lewis 46 ). I absolutely agree with the 90 percentile because throughout our society it is very hard to find a well paying job without a college degree. Growing up most adults I was acquainted with either did not attend college, or even graduate high school. Graduating high school back in their time opened doors for many job opportunities, but today the bar is set so high with competition that college is almost necessary. Jobs are so fierce in present time that many even look at resumes depending on which college the applicant attended. Do we really need a college degree? Well, let’s consider how life would be without one. Back in some time college was reserved for the wealthy, privileged. Today, more than 18 million people are enrolled in some kind of further education. Education is viewed as vital to people’s success. In order to compete in the nation’s workforce you must strive for a college education. College has become more and more important as jobs have gotten more complicated. Due to the rise in technology throughout the world many jobs require a much higher level of education than in the past. Therefore college is a requirement for a career that will involve a wide base of knowledge. Studies show that college graduates make almost twice as much as those without a degree.
Getting a college education is important because it will contribute significantly to your development as a person. College is a time where you learn a lot, both in and out of the classroom, including things that will remain with you for the rest of your life. College reminds you that after high school becoming an adult comes with a lot of responsibility. It makes you realize that

Arguments Against Standardized Testing

...should not be required for admission to college because it doesn't
really tell you anything. Why make someone take the ACT, SAT, or any IQ test just to see if their smart enough for college, or to even get in that specific college. Some people don't do well with test taking so they get a bad score. All that really shows if your good at test taking or not. This is why standardized test should be abolished from college admissions. A standardized test is called such because everyone takes the same test with the same questions, so ones performance can be compared to everyones else, in order for a relative score to be obtained (Lurie, Karen. "Standardized Testing.”). The first SAT was published in 1926 and administered 8,040 people. Standardized tests serve to offer measure of aptitude. There are standardized test that can measure school progress, intelligence, memory, and behavior capabilities. Some standardized tests are given to a whole group of people at once, others are given individually. There are also...

Paradox Of College

...it should be changed, instead they just complain about how no one changes it. The fact of the matter is that everyone loves free things, especially the idea of free college. However, would that really end up benefiting a student’s education overall? College should be free to those who work for it by maintaining an adequate GPA, therefore we know the student is focused only on education and not about how they’re paying for education, which also allows students to engage in more extracurricular activities such as internships and possibly studying abroad. Why should our country be worried about providing...

Argumentative Essay: Should College Ever Be A Thing?

...For our two topics to debate we had one of the most amazing topics anyone could ever think of, if college should be free or not, and if video games cause violence. I know, so exciting! These topics are of great importance to me because I play video games all the time and I might be going to college soon. I don’t know about some of the other people, but I was super interested in these topics because they are really big problems that are in the world and we need to address them right away before anything else. My position of topic one, if college should be free or not is the obvious choice. Free college should not nor ever be a thing. I believe this not because it it my opinion, but because it is the only smart answer towards the subject. If I get free college, then where does all of that money that I have to pay come from? It isn't coming from me, but from you. I know shocker right? That's how free college works, the government isn’t really paying for it but the citizens are paying for it out of income tax. Federal income tax would skyrocket to nearly 40%, that's not including all of the other taxes we have to pay. Even after all of that some people still think college should be free, yeah right....

Why We Should Not Ready For College Essay

...reasons for why 58% of students who took the SAT are deemed not college ready. These reasons may include; students do not study properly, students do not do their homework as regularly, and many kids are not as mature as the grade they are in should portray. I believe that a big reason for this conclusion is that students do not study properly. This may be caused by students not knowing the proper steps to studying. It is crucial for students to study days before a test, as well as throughout the days leading up to it. Now a days, most students just study the night before a test because they can get away with it in high school. But, in college it is totally different. Most students are going to have to learn that they are going to need to study well in advance of the test in hopes of doing well on it. So, on the SAT it may be showing that students hadn’t really studied well for it which may be why many are being deemed as not ready for college. Another reason for this could be that students don’t do their homework everyday. Many students want...

Is College Necessary or Not

...Go To College? The big question for a high school senior today is should I go to college or not? In today’s world they say you have to go to college to be successful in life. Is this true or false? There are many big questions that taunt a senior. Am I ready for college academically? Am I financially prepared for the cost of college? Do I want to be forty thousand dollars in debt right after college? Do I really know what profession I want to pursue? These are all overwhelming questions that a high school senior has to answer. Among them are the pressures that everyone should go to college that our society dictates today. Charles Murray in “What’s Wrong with Vocational School?” makes a strong case that America needs to look at higher education in a different way. The second article “On Real Education” by Robert T. Perry states that America needs more college graduates. Both articles make good points, but Murray makes the point that not all are made for college. In the article “What’s Wrong with Vocational School” by Charles Murray he believes that college is not necessary for some people. Murray takes a look at the IQ test and how it could determine if students are academically capable or ready for college. An IQ test could possibly measure if you are college material or is there another path that would be better. Any score below 115 would mean that college is going to be difficult and hard. According to Murray the top 15% to 25% of the population should go to college for...

Student's Indolence

...Student’s Indolence Flores, J. P. Malayan Colleges Laguna Abstract Students these days have different reasons to escape listening to their lectures in class. I also experienced this since high school. But when I put myself in college, I observed that it’s a lot more different how students be lazy than in high school. Assignments, projects and researches came and became harder. But, students nowadays still disregard these works and they don’t know that this can affect their lives in the future. Some need some more sleep because of cramming overnight. Other students play their own video games, others throw parties and do other things instead of studying and doing their homework first. Some think that they don’t need to study because they already know what would be the professor’s lecture to them. Some student’s do not like what they are studying for its really hard for them. Some do not think about their future, they just care that they are having fun while studying but not really learning things. Some are forced to study because it’s their parents’ dream to finish a particular course. And others can’t concentrate studying because they have their own personal problems to think and they can’t just leave that problem behind. These reasons are one of the factors that students often fail in their specialty of education. If this indolence continues in the future, a nation’s economy may be affected to the point that it will decline because more unemployed people will be added...

This article is about how the amount of gays and lesbians are coming out of the closet at a Christian school. However, at the same time they have to battle to be accepted by Christian schools, which say that everyone should be accepted. This is becoming a big issue in many schools. There are a lot of students that are dealing with this problem, not just in Christian schools, but all over. Christians are known to have the belief that everyone, no matter their status, should be accepted. So this to be issue in the Christian schools, raises a lot of questions to these students and the people who support the Christian faith. The article states, “Decades after the gay rights movement swept the country’s secular schools, more gays and lesbians at Christian colleges are starting to come out of the closet” (Eckholm) from what I have learned about the Christian belief, this sounds like it should not be a problem. However, the article goes on to say, “But in their efforts to assert themselves, whether in campus clubs or more publicly on Facebook, gay students are running up against administrators who defend what they describe as God’s law on sexual morality, and who must also answer to conservative trustees and alumni.” (Eckholm) This means that these Christian schools are not living up to what people thought was the real...

Pay for Play

...Time magazine -- striking his Heisman pose with six simple words, "It's Time To Pay College Athletes" sharing his space -- the most universally agreed, yet universally debated, issue in all of non-professional sports returned to the front of the national discussion. Yet the beauty of the debate is once again lost because the foundation of the argument sits on a fault line. There is no system of payment that can be put in place that is fair across the board to all students, all sports and all schools that participate in college athletics. At this point, the debate over whether college athletes should be paid really doesn't change anything. It's not about finding the right answer because there is no right answer. Seemingly everyone, regardless of the stance they take, makes valid points. Yes, for the most part, colleges and universities are making money off of the backs, performances and success of major football and men's basketball programs and the scholarship athletes who play them. But ask yourself: Isn't that what most businesses do? Yes, business. Not college athletics. Business, man. The problem seems to be that we don't look at college athletics as a business. Instead, we subconsciously and constantly (and emotionally) look at college sports as something different. We allow the "school" part to blind us into thinking that the educational piece changes the dynamics of what is really going on and exempts athletics from being about something other than money. It's...

Money for Grades

...Money vs. True Value of Education Raeshelle Allen September 8,, 2012 As a child growing up doing well in school was never an option. The only this I had to do was go to school and make good grades. Now that I think about it school was my job and my paycheck was the knowledge I was gaining. This generation now-a-days have the idea that they should be rewarded finically for doing well. Students should not offered finical incentives to do well on standardize test in school. Schools should not give into to paying students for their performance. It is understood that in order to keep a school in good academic standings you have to make sure students do well on the standardized test. The test scores not only reflect the school but also represent each student as an individual. So you can see why it is important for students to do well but should that really mean at all cost. For many years teachers have been teaching the material for the long term knowledge now it seems as if they are just beginning to teach just for testing. There are some major disadvantages when trying to offer students financial incentives to do well on standardized test. Education should be viewed as a privilege. Many students take educations for granted. Not knowing that in some countries education is still not free let along for all males and females. You even have some certain types of schools here in the USA that you have to pay for high school education. I would think since students know that one day...
