The term ‘globalisation’ refers to the development of the world which has become increasingly unified in aspects such as economies, societies, and cultures as a result of the international trade, communication, immigration and transportation (Financial Times n.d.). According to Moore (2003), globalisation is not a new phenomenon, it has started since long before the Britain ruled the waves. Globalisation was focused on the economic section in the past, however, it has recently broadened to a larger range of areas such as culture, media, technology, socio-cultural, political, and biological factors (Financial Times n.d.). Since the past, trading of goods and services, knowledge and cultures have already existed, but the refined technologies at present have increased the exchange speed much faster than ever (Global Education n.d.). This global process has brought some enormous effects economically, socially and politically both between and within nations. There has been much debate in recent times about that globalisation causes only an increase in economic inequalities, however, this essay will demonstrate that globalisation also creates positive and beneficial consequences both between and within nations.
Firstly, globalisation creates greater free trade. Free trade is defined as a structure of transaction among countries where no exclusive tax is charged on imported goods (Merriam-Webster n.d.). According to the World Trade Organization (n.d.), free trade empowers economic growth. One of the positive effects of free trade is that it allows a country to specialise in producing a few types of goods where that country have a comparative advantage. Therefore, the country can produce that few types of goods at a lower opportunity cost (Economic Help 2012). What is more, when nations specialise in producing certain types of goods, consumers can receive lower prices and

“Pro” vs. “Anti” Globalization: the New Divide

...Chapter 2. Globalization in Question 1. “Pro” vs. “Anti” Globalization: The New Divide For a number of years, the question of economic globalization—i.e., the interdependence of national systems of production and exchange and the ―financialization‖ of the world (revealed by the American subprime crisis in 2007)—has polarized public opinion. The problems stemming from economic globalization dominate the news: the outsourcing production in search of cheaper labor costs; the decreasing efficiency of national juridical and fiscal regulation; the waning of the very idea of sovereignty; the growing constraints within which politicians can act; the emergence of a small class of the immensely rich alongside the billions of poor; the rise of new financial actors—pension funds, hedge funds, and sovereign wealth funds—capable of destabilizing or seizing control of entire realms of the economy; and the emergence of China and India as new global economic actors, as their companies storm the industrial bastions of the United States and Europe. Should one be for or against globalization? Can we turn our backs on globalization, and return to national or regional systems of production and exchange that are autonomous, even autarkic? Is the large cosmopolitan corporation the new leviathan—a monster that must be slain—or a force for human progress? It is tempting to reduce the debate over the economy of the twenty-first century to a simple alternative: being for or against globalization. Yet in...

Starbucks

...1 GLOBALIZATION 2 PART 1 Globalization PART ONE Planet Starbucks T hirty years ago Starbucks was a single store in Seattle’s Pike Place Market selling premium roasted coffee. Today it is a global roaster and retailer of coffee with more than 7,600 retail stores, some 2,000 of which are to be found in 34 countries outside the United States. Starbucks Corporation set out on its current course in the 1980s when the company’s director of marketing, Howard Schultz, came back from a trip to Italy enchanted with the Italian coffeehouse experience. Schultz, who later became CEO, persuaded the company’s owners to experiment with the coffeehouse format—and the Starbucks experience was born. The basic strategy was to sell the company’s own premium roasted coffee, along with freshly brewed espresso-style coffee beverages, a variety of pastries, coffee accessories, teas, and other products, in a tastefully designed coffeehouse setting. The company also stressed providing superior customer service. Reasoning that motivated employees provide the best customer service, Starbucks executives devoted much attention to employee hiring and training programs and progressive compensation policies that gave even part-time employees stock option grants and medical benefits. The formula met with spectacular success in the United States, where Starbucks went from obscurity to one of the best known brands in the country in a decade. In 1995, with almost 700 stores across the United States...

The Demographic, Social & Cultural Context of Business

...expectancy and/or declining fertility rates. Aging of population (also known as demographic aging, and population aging) is a summary term for shifts in the age distribution (i.e., age structure) of a population toward older ages.  A direct consequence of the ongoing global fertility transition (decline) and of mortality decline at older ages, population aging is expected to be among the most prominent global demographic trends of the 21st century. Population aging is progressing rapidly in many industrialized countries, but those developing countries whose fertility declines began relatively early also are experiencing rapid increases in their proportion of elderly people. This pattern is expected to continue over the next few decades, eventually affecting the entire world.  Population aging has many important socio-economic and health consequences, including the increase in the old-age dependency ratio.  It presents challenges for public health (concerns over...

International Cooperation at a Crossroads

...power of human compassion. The tsunami that swept across the Indian Ocean left some 300,000 people dead. Millions more were left homeless. Within days of the tsunami, one of the worst natural disasters in recent history had given rise to the world’s greatest international relief effort, showing what can be achieved through global solidarity when the international community commits itself to a great endeavour. The tsunami was a highly visible, unpredictable and largely unpreventable tragedy. Other tragedies are less visible, monotonously predictable and readily preventable. Every hour more than 1,200 children die away from the glare of media attention. This is equivalent to three tsunamis a month, every month, hitting the world’s most vulnerable citizens—its children. The causes of death will vary, but the overwhelming majority can be traced to a single pathology: poverty. Unlike the tsunami, that pathology is preventable. With today’s technology, financial resources and accumulated knowledge, the world has the capacity to overcome extreme deprivation. Yet as an international community we allow poverty to destroy lives on a scale that dwarfs the impact of the tsunami. Five years ago, at the start of the new millennium, the world’s governments united to make a remarkable promise to the victims of global poverty. Meeting at the United Nations, they signed the Millennium Declaration—a solemn pledge “to free our fellow men, women and children from the abject and dehumanizing conditions...
