Doc, Are Boys Going Mad?

ARE BOYS GOING CRAZY AND DEAF?

It has become a thing of great concern to me and all like minds who wish to have some peace and quietness that the world of the male specie has gone crazy with noise! How is it that music, which is supposed to calm the body and relax the mind, is played so loudly? Is it possible to have music played quietly just to the hearing of the person in the room? Can music be enjoyed in an atmosphere of silence rather than in a ‘hell of noise’? These and many other questions are what disturb my mind since I started living in PHS building as a student of the University of Port Harcourt.

Permit me to say that this phenomenon is only noticeable among boys of this generation and men who sell in the open market. Take a walk near Delta Park and you will be stunned at the loudness of the music being played at the various shops within the motor park vicinity. Or go round the various hostels where majority of the occupants are boys and you will wonder if a party or parties are going on at every door! The loudness of the music is such that if you knock on the door of any such rooms, they won’t hear you and even when they manage to answer, you will have to shout for them to hear what you will say. You can’t even think of sleeping in such an environment!

The freedom to enjoy music surely did not mean others should be ‘punished’ who wish not to be disturbed by this madness. May be they see it as a thing of pride and competition to showcase the musical gadgets and albums they’ve got, especially where it gives them some satisfaction to tell others how current they are in the world of music! Unfortunately, such people do not know that they are causing damage to their eardrums for playing the music so loud all day. This will only come to play when they get older.

The case is different where girls are; and thank God for this balance God has made for us, the world would have been crazier! Although there are girls who are garrulous by nature, they won’t go to the length of disturbing the whole place with such act.

David in the Bible played music to calm the troubled spirit of King Saul (1Sam.16:23). I am sure he didn’t play it noisily; if not, King Saul would have thrown him out of his service the first day!

Finally, one of the objectives of education -according to the policy of education in Nigeria- is “to raise a generation of people who can think for themselves, respect the views and feelings of others, respect the dignity of labour, and appreciate those specified under our broad national aims, and live as good Citizens”. (p. 16). Surely, as students living among people in a society where everyone has the right to live in peace and serenity, we can begin to work on this, even today.

Mercy Killing In Piggy's Death

...LOTF and LOST both explore murder vs mercy killing. In LOTF you could say two of the boys were murdered in cold blood vs in LOST where you could say they weren't trying to murder they were just trying to help. The definition of murder is the killing of a human being(doc A). This happened in LOTF when Piggy was killed by the rock. Where as Marshal’s death was more civilized(doc C) as they were just trying to help him. In LOTF I believe Piggy's death is 1st degree. It was a act of hatred from Roger. As the book says,”High overhead, Roger, with a sense of delirious abandonment, leaned all his weight onto the lever.”(doc F) As for Simon's death you can't really say because the boys were so involved in the ritual and didn't know what...

...really a word I didn’t recognize but I have never heard the term “Dating Down” before in the term it is used as in here. I feel like I may have heard it before but in this point in time I cannot recall a moment in which I heard it. Whenever I heard “dating down” it was usually about someone dating someone who was younger than them, but in the book Meg says “[Cathy] never chose her boyfriends or sex partners; she let them choose her.” (Jay 101). Hearing this I take dating down to mean you’re just going for anyone that comes to you and accepting it. The phrase really does put things in perspective; you’re basically dating less than what you can really get to feel some sort of love; which I guess is dating down from what you deserve. “Her mother said she needed a different outfit or better body, her father told her she was too much, too loud- too something.”(Jay 100) This boost the title “dating down” because her parents are literally putting her down which is causing the way she is going about dating in the first place; not much relevance but just stood me out that, a girl who is being put down let it define who she is dating. This whole chapter kind of lived up to its name; circled around this 8girl’s struggle to fit in and how Jay too that and helped her “take charge of her love life” (Jay 111) and help her revise her own story. I thought it was interesting how Cathy used music to cope with these problems; I also liked how Jay used the personification of her Ipod “whispering...

...1) What is at stake in this decision for Carol and for Davis Press? Why? There is a lot at stake in this decision for Carol and Davis Press. Let’s take a look at what would happen if the book “Meccan Madness” were to be published. Referring to the past and what had happen to Rushdie when his book “The Satanic Verse” was released, it was mayhem. Death threats were issued, Rushdie was wanted dead for several years, and innocent people were killed and much more were injured. If Carol decides to publish Taajwar’s book, there is a possibility history could repeat itself, which includes Davis Press making high profits by selling the book, but also losing millions of dollars that went towards the security of employees. If Carol decided not to publish the book, it is obvious they will lose on the chance of making high profits. However, all the employees will remain safe and not have to fear what will happen to them if “Meccan Madness” is published. 2) Who are the stakeholders here? To whom (or what) does Davis owe her allegiance? The stakeholders in this case are the employees of Davis Press. The employees play a major role in this case because of the amount of work they do for the company. Another stakeholder in this case is the government because in the event problems occur between countries. This sort of situation happen when Rushdie’s book was published where there was issues between Britain and Iran. Carol owes her loyalty to the employees for the amount of...

THE PICTURE OF DEATH THEY killed Doc Savage on Saturday. It was chilly that afternoon, with a little snow falling, and the snow as hard as salt particles. The wind had a hissing strength; it pounced on pedestrians and shook their overcoats and flapped their hat brims. Soldiers on the streets, and sailors in their winter-issue peajackets, blew steam on their fingers. The man with the red hat and the blue armband with the yellow cross was not used to the cold, or to the bite that winter has in New York, close to the sea. He cursed the weather fluently, with the slightly accented voice of a man who can speak several languages. His red hat and blue-yellow-cross armband, incidentally, was his own idea of a disguise. Dress in a bizarre outfit, he believed, and people wouldn't be able to recognize you when you dressed in ordinary clothes. He crossed Fifth Avenue and went into a restaurant, one of...

Other people might says, “Better to be with someone who will make you happy”, what if the reason why you prefer to be alone is that someone who you want to be with is always ignoring you when you need his help or let say his affection and belongingness is not unto you. What if every time you go for, is just like you’re a wind and crap to that person?
