Pros and Cons Essay

...Dogs versus Cats: Which Makes a Better Pet? Vicki Fournier COM/155 November 13, 2011 Genevieve Fraser Dogs vs. Cats: Which Makes a Better Pet? There is no right or wrong answer to this question. Some people say they are dog people, some people say they are cat people, and some people say they are both. Beyond the pros and cons, the decision to what makes a better pet often comes down to a person’s lifestyle, expectations, or in certain circumstances a person’s needs. Remember “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” (Hungerford, 1878) Both dogs and cats are common domesticated pets. Dogs have been domesticated for 14,000 years and cats for 7,000 (Cats vs Dogs, n.d.). It appears in my research that most people that were asked this question “which makes a better pet, a dog or a cat” replied with the answer “dogs,” but if dogs are the better pet then why is it that there are 96.3 million homes that own cats and only 77.5 million homes that own dogs. The scientists at Oxford University released a study that claims dogs are smarter than cats and The London Daily Telegraph has reported dogs have been named as more social animals and therefore have bigger brains than the “alone loving cat” (Gatton Star, 2010, p.11). Here is something to think about: have you ever heard of a cat running full speed into a glass door? Sure a dog is a “man’s best friend” and is always there by your side, he can catch a ball in his mouth, and he knows exactly...

My Cats

...my cats Long time ago, a people raised a cat and a dog as his pet. And the cat and the dog were very good friends. They ate together, lived together, and play together. They almost stayed together all of the day. One day, the master lost his ancestral gem and he was very sad. Then the cat and the dog decided to find the gem. On the road, they met a mountain, the dog said” Cat brother, climb on my back!” Then they met a river. The cat couldn’t swim. The dog said” Don’t worry. I can help you. Climb on my back.” Finally, they found the gem. But when they returned to home, the cat told their master” it’s me who find the gem, and the dog did nothing.” When the dog wanted to explain it, the master didn’t give dog a chance. He gave the cat a delicious fish, and kicked the dog out of the door. The dog and the cat weren’t friend since then. That’s why dogs bite cats as soon as they meet, and dogs always pursue while cats always escape. And another reason is that dogs and cats have very different language. When the dog meets the cat, the dog always wags tail, because they think it is a friendly way. But cats often think it is provocation. But nowadays dogs and cats aren’t always enemy any more. Sometimes, they can stay together peacefully. Maybe you could say the dog is a better pet. But I don’t know why, I just like cats very much. I always become crazy when I meet a cat. They are really cute. When they want something, they fawn on you and follow you all around. And cats can be very...

On the other hand, there are animals who help and care for all kinds of animals outside of their own kind. Animals can not only help for survival but they can be there for comfort. No one would think or even picture cats and dogs together or helping one another but they do. ...ANIMAL CONTROL SERVICES SYSTEMS REDESIGN Governing the County of Fresno is a set of Federal, State, and local laws, rules, and regulations. The purpose of these regulations serves to protect the safety, health, and welfare of the residents. Incorporated as a county within the State of California since 1856, Fresno has seen the establishment, modification, and abolishment of thousands of regulations. As every governmental body must have, the County of Fresno has established a governing Board as well as local departments that support the Board’s efforts to oversee the legislative and executive needs of the county. When situations arise, this governmental branch must take action to ensure laws are which protect its citizens, as well as enforce them appropriately. Such is the case in the recent system redesign of the Fresno County animal control program. Due to the recent contract termination of the longtime local vendor, the system redesign of the Fresno County animal control program will address state and local mandates more efficiently and save the county money. As a concern of public health and safety, animal control is a responsibility of the county requiring them to implement and manage a program. State law and county ordinance specifically require the reporting of all vicious animal complaints and bites, enforcement of a rabies quarantine program, establishment of a licensing program, and dead animal and stray pickup, including leash law enforcement. Ozarks Mutts & Meow

...Ozark Mutts & Meows Marketing Plan Ozark Mutts & Meows Marketing Plan 1.0 Executive Summary Ozark Mutts & Meow is a start-up company entering a new market of mobile veterinary services and in-home pet sitting services. The pet service industry in 2011 spent $50.96 billion (APPA). In 2012, APPA estimates pet service spending to increase to $52.87 billion. Mobile veterinary services and in-home pet services will change the way pet owners will receive services for their pets. Pet owners will benefit from these services because they will not need to travel to a stationary location in order to receive veterinary services or pet sitting services. There were 72.9 million homes in the United States with pet in 2011 (APPA). Ozark Mutts & Meow will be creating a unique service to the market with minimal competition from competitors in other markets. ...animal shelters for the Hinesville area, recorded receiving approximately 30 dogs and cats each day, and 10,000 animals each year. More than four of these animals are euthanized daily, simply because the facility does not have adequate accommodations for the growing population of strays. But Liberty Humane Shelter has committed to making a change for the better to these statistics. Since 2012, the shelter has adopted out 218 cats and 325 dogs. As a “no kill” shelter which takes in animals from multiple rescues, the public, as well as the local humane society, Liberty Humane Shelter understands that animals do not deserve to die simply because they have no home. Equipped with two caged cat rooms for kittens, grown cats and one non caged room for recreation, five spacious dog rooms, and a well equipped clinic, LHS can provide a true haven to animals, both short term and long term. Every animal that is taken in is given the best medical attention available, and automatically spayed or neutered. Each animal also receives a full round of vaccinations and is implanted with a microchip. Unlike many over-populated shelters anxious to place their animals in any home, LHS carefully screens potential adopters. Adoptees are judged on their care of previous pets, the amount of time they can dedicate to a new pet, and whether the size of their house is appropriate to the needs of the pet. With the adoption of a dog, the new owners receive a full medical...

The most obvious outward manifestation of this is making the ear cartilage fold so the ears bend forward, giving the cat its characteristic appearance. Unfortunately, the genetic defect that causes abnormality of the ear cartilage also causes severe abnormalities of the cartilage of bones – there will be defective bone development and severe bone and cartilage abnormalities in all cats with folded ears. These bone abnormalities lead to severe and painful arthritis. The genetics of osteochondrodysplasia The mutation causing osteochondrodysplasia results from a single autosomal dominant gene, although the gene may have incomplete penetrance, and thus the abnormalities may vary in severity between one cat and another. All Scottish Fold cats suffer from variable degrees of painful degenerative joint disease, which can result in fusing of the tail, tarsi (ankles) and stifles (knees). This is apparent clinically as a reluctance to move, and abnormal posture and gait, lameness and short misshapen limbs. International Cat Care believe...

Personal Narrative: Cats Are Barrier Than Dogs

...Beneath my couch lies a villain with cute little claws ready to rip at my socks and feet. There’s an obvious reasons why dogs are consider man's best friend instead of finicky felines, and it’s because cats are dicks. In all actuality, the main reasons are dogs care and listen. Though I’ve only been around for 20 years, I’ve never meet a dog that didn’t at least know its name, yet countless number of cats don’t even look when its name is spoken. Somehow people still think cats are smarter than dogs. In spite of knowing this, I’m a frequently annoyed, yet somehow still proud cat owner. My mom and I put up so much crap with Roxas. I’m surprised I’m still a cat owner. If he isn’t chewing on things he isn’t supposed to, he’s waiting to strike within the couch when someone sits down. Not to mention, he leaves a piece of him, in the form of fur, everywhere he goes. Though he doesn’t have control of that last pet peeve. For someone like me, who’s a child at heart, there’s nothing worse then waking up only to find out my self proclaimed cuddle buddy decided to have my beloved DS charger for a midnight snack. I had planned my...

Pet Grandma Executive Summary

...Pet Grandma offers on-site pet sitting services for dogs and cats, providing the personal loving pet care that the owners themselves would provide if they were there. Our clients are dog and cat owners who choose to leave their pets at home when they travel or who want their pets to have company when their owners are at work. Pet Grandma offers a variety of pet care services from day visits through 24 hour care over a period of weeks – all in the pet’s home environment. Across Canada the pet care business has seen an explosion of growth over the last three years. West Vancouver is an affluent area with a high pet density. Our market research has shown that 9 out of 10 pet owners polled in West Vancouver would prefer to have their pets cared for in their own homes when they travel rather than be kenneled and 6 out of 10 would consider having a pet sitter provide company for their dog when they were at work. While there are currently eight businesses offering pet sitting in West Vancouver, only three of these offer on-site pet care and none offers “pet visit” services for working pet owners. Pet Grandma’s marketing strategy is to emphasize the quality of pet care we provide (“a Grandma for your pet!”) and the availability of our services. Dog owners who work, for instance, will come home to find happy, friendly companions who have already been exercised and walked rather than demanding whiny animals. All pet services will be provided by staff trained in animal care...

Dog Food

...Dog food is great By T. J. Dunn, Jr., DVM   "What is the best food to feed a dog?" Every day veterinarians are asked that question by dog owners. It's a sincere question because most dog owners want to feed the very best to their furry friends. Good health begins with proper nutrition, regardless of price or convenience of acquisition.   Please understand that the entire discussion on this page relates to healthy dogs with no kidney, thyroid, food allergy or other abnormal conditions. Also, the content of this page is my opinion regarding the "best" dry food and how to determine what you think is "best" to feed dogs.   A big reason why it i is strictly an opinion, there is no single answer to the question "What is the best diet to feed a dog?" Or if there is an answer it is, "It depends".   Over the past 37 years I have been examining dogs and cats in my practices I have made it a point to ask the owner "What diet are you feeding?" I have gotten all sorts of answers but in every case I relate the owner's response to what I am seeing in the patient. And over the years my suggestions regarding what to feed have changed.   Originally I took the pet food manufacturer's declarations as fact -- that an assortment of "Complete and Balanced" pet foods were perfectly nourishing because that wording was not legally permitted on pet food labels unless feeding trials demonstrated its veracity. I eventually discovered I was mistaken in the belief that any "Complete and Balanced"...

...about my group and how the process of doing our project went. , My community service learning was at Watermelon Mountain Ranch. I was in charge of helping the pet dogs get adopted out, I was also in charge of setting up cages, cleaning them out and breaking them down. I also fed the dogs, watered the dogs, cleaned up after them, waste wise, I also walked the dogs. I removed them from the transportation vehicle and brought them into Petsmart. I had to go to the orientation which was held on a Saturday at noon. I had to also take a class on how to walk a dog and put on a leash correctly. I am also in the process of becoming an adoption counselor. I spent a total of 23 hours with them in the months of June and July. I enjoyed my time with the people of Watermelon Ranch and the dogs they both have such great personalities. They take care of dogs, cats, goats, chickens, and a pig that are all at the shelter. On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays they drive the dogs to Petsmart off of Coors and Ellison. Which is where I would meet them to set up for the day of adoptions of dogs, I only worked with the dog portion of Watermelon Mountain Ranch pet adoptions. The communication skills I learned were learning to speak in public, I learned how to improve my confidence by speaking to numerous people at once about adopting our dogs. I figured out the reasons for my anxiety I fear the...
