Mali has inherited lots musical culture from the Maninka, Soninke, and Bambara. The Mali people pass on the stories through songs and dancing by griots or story tellers. Griots performed for the village and royalty.another type of storyteller was the Jelis, which was like griot but was from the Mandinka tribe. Mali also has different types of instruments. They have the Kora, a 21 stringed instrument, and several others like the Tama, the talking drum. Griots or Jelis tended to use the Kora for there storytelling. The N’goni is another instrument used by Jelis. A mix of a drum and a stringed instrument. In fact one of the rulers of Mali had a court musician who could play this instrument.
