...based on greed, what makes this tale especially gothic is the presence of murder, incest and suicide. When the story begins, we are introduced with a case of murder by poisoning. This form of assassination was very common in the middle ages. However, later on we realize the true identity of the killer. What pushes the murderer to kill is greed; one of man’s biggest weakness. The mystery behind the true identity of the assassin is yet another example of dark literature. On the side, it is also worth noticing the gruesome details of the torture scene: “…the joints snapped audibly into their sockets with the elasticity of a bow.” The pain is so amazingly described that even the reader can feel it. Also in the beginning, we are told about Don Juan’s incest crime on his half sister. Nevertheless, the Portuguese insists that he is in no way allied to Josepha and that he is innocent. Even though the subject was never talked about in the older days because it was and is still considered a taboo in most societies, in this tale the act of incest is another major theme. Finally all the complications and deaths cause the father of the poisoned girl to commit suicide. This is yet another topic that was never spoken of during that era, since the church condemns it. ...Three works of literature, labeled immoral, unfit to read and even satanic, completely criticized for their use of vulgar language and “blasphemes” way of speaking their mind. What critics fail to see is the true creativity of the humor in Candide, the morality and kindness in Huckleberry Finn, and the passion of Don Juan. All three of these great works of literature have suffered the injustice of biased criticism and have been rejected from public schools, which wastes their educational potential. Candide has been place into the index of prohibited books, Huckleberry Finn has been banned almost every public school, and Don Juan has succumb to a similar fate. What people don’t understand is that these novels and works of poetry can show us more about how humans treat each other, how realistic some ridiculous things can be, and how we can understand ourselves. Candide is a novel written by the French writer Voltaire, it’s about a germen man by the name of Candide who goes on quite a journey meeting a variety of people, constantly running into political and religious figures with bad results. Meeting up with old friends and characters he believed dead, the novel consists of unrealistic situations in a comedic fashion but in the end, through all the hell he can say let’s just forget about it and move on in our life. ...Journal Entry HIS/110 The Spanish migration to North America was an interesting topic in this week that piqued my interest. Learning more about this topic in the second chapter of US History through 1877 was a good starting point to keep my attention because it is something that I have been fascinated with beforehand. I used the artwork from this chapter because it is beautiful and seems to tell an excellent story of migration and the survival skills that were needed in this day in age. I researched more about the Spanish conquistador and was able to read on "Came Men on Horses: The Conquistador Expeditions of Francisco Vazquez de Coronado and Don Juan de Onate". This book speaks of any myths that may have been written or spoken of about the way the conquest of America. The Spanish was the first Europeans to enter the America Southwest. Stories about the city of Gold is what lured in a lot of people in hopes of riches. The conquistadors were fighting the decision to search for the city of gold or not. They did not want to have the burden on their shoulders of not attempting to search for it, and someone else find it if it deemed to be true. There were seven cities that were expected to contain gold for the conquistadors to search out. The conquistadors depended on navigation when it came to their needs of survival.
