Don’t Judge A Book By Its Cover Don’t judge a book by its cover is a metaphorical phrase used which means don’t pre-judge someone or something by their outside view. Society as a whole tends to make an initial impression simply by the way someone looks, dresses or even talks. “Mother’s Tongue” by Amy Tan was about an English scholar whose mother was judged due to her broken English. This reading is just one mean of how someone is judged for her communication barrier. Everyone comes from a variety of backgrounds, cultural differences, and influenced lifestyles that create differences in which a person appears and identifies to someone else.
There are many different characteristics that create the makeup of each person. Cultural language varieties are one type of characteristic of how someone can by perceived by another person from a different culture. Different forms of the language can be introduced daily through music, television, forms of media, and people that surround you. Cultures are another means that create the makeup of how people from different societies appear to each other. This can be seen through clothing styles and personality makeup.
Language is the main form of communication which creates a universal difference among people. It is easy to create a personal bias opinion towards a different language. An example of this bias would be if you are an English Native American and walk past two Hispanic decent people carrying on a conversation in a foreign language not known to you. In this instance you may create a personal judgment against these individuals because you may think they are making fun of you, or say something about you. These same two individuals may also speak English, however in their form of understanding that is foreign to you. To them; they believe they are speaking fluent English without any barriers, but to your personal understanding it is broken English.
Childhood background and experiences through life influence a person’s perception of style, religious beliefs, and personality makeup. Can the way a person dresses really tell you the characteristics of that individual? In today’s world; society tends to judge people by how their clothes are worn. Skaters are referred to as being “EMO” for their preference of skin tight jeans. Individuals to dress in all-black attire are considered to be “Gothic” Simply because society segregates itself into smaller identifying groups does not shed light on the true characteristic of each person as an individual. We as a society also tend to segregate and judge one another based on our religious beliefs. If you’re a Christian and believe in God compared to someone who does not follow the same beliefs, do you look at that person with prejudice thoughts? This indifference also tends to segregate individuals thus creating a blind misconception of that person. There are many different types of personality traits that can lead to the misconception of someone. An example of a misconception due to the different types of personalities would be when someone that is rather outspoken thinks someone who sits alone is shy and has no friends for a reason. The individual who is shy may think the outspoken person is loud and just seeking attention. Similar personality indifferences can be noted between someone who is self-center versus someone who is always giving to others. The person who is self-centered may view the giving individual as “without self-strength,” however the giving person may view the self-centered individual as “heartless” and “stuck up.”
As you can see the phrase “Don’t judge a book by its cover” can have many attributes as to how individuals are viewed by one another. There are no two people alike, thus always creating a possibility for mixed thoughts and understanding. Though this paper does not fully evolve into the complete understanding of individual conceptions, it may however create a basic footprint of how we as a society judge each other.

Dont Judge a Book by It Cover

...Sages have been chattering all the time about the danger and devastation of judging a book by its cover. Admittedly, there is some truth in their effort, as it would be unsophisticated and misleading to calculate one’s moral character and dignity solely by his “cover”, be it his look, stature or even the quality of clothing.(如果字数多了,这个蓝色部分可以删掉) A closer study of the issue, aided by an acute sense of customs and convictions, (如果字数多了,这个蓝色部分可以删掉) however, reveals quite indisputably that one can learn, more or less, about people by the clothes they dress. The most significant information thus gathered is personal identity and cultural inclinations. Coming first to indicate the affinity between the people and their clothing is the identity issue, which serves as a solid, identifiable evidence to my argument. (如果字数多了,这个蓝色部分可以删掉) With different styles of dressing, one intends to articulate his own identity, thus conveying some cultural subtleties, say, his likes and dislikes, his convictions and taboos. The example of Hippies and Yuppies comes readily to one’s mind. Their unconventional, rebellious dressing code, in a non-verbal manner, remained their counter-cultural manifesto. It is also true in the case of politicians and business people, whose clothing undoubtedly helps to differentiate them from those with different pursuits and occupations. With one’s dress, a sensitive, well-informed mind could also gather crucial information about the customs, beliefs and other cultural...

Judgement

...Dont judge a book by its cover, a phrase which is probably most known, yet a crime all of us seem to be guilty of. Im not saying everyone is judgemental, im just simply outlining that physical attributes and appearance generally have some sort of an influence on many of the decisions we make, some more serious than others. I recall back when i worked in hospitality, i was 18 and without so much as an informal interview, i was given a job and enough hours to support myself to live out of home. I loved working there, i was given long shifts mainly closes and seemed to have a ball getting to know everyone. I then recall hearing one of the much older staff (and i mean older as in, their time working for the company, not referring to their age) expressing how she wanted the opportunity to undertake a role in management. She did the genuine thing that any honest and determined person would do, she asked the head honcho how she could possibly increase her chances of moving up professionally and was taken aback by the feedback he had offered. She simply needed to appear more attractive.... Not really fair when her hard work, enthusiasm, integrity and initiative enabled her to without a doubt fulfil a senior role. It had me thinking... Now, why you might ask do i find this to be a big enough deal to write my first ever blog over? Here’s my beef.... I’m 25, I work full time for the government in a job i think i am fairly passionate about, albeit admittedly not as confident in, but i...

Examples Of Stereotyping

...A stereotype is an idea or image overused on a person or thing. We tend to start stereotyping at a young age which is extremely problematic. It may be a positive or negative stereotype, but stereotypes in general do no good besides teaching children that labeling based on race, religion, and/or appearance is okay. These stereotypes affect how we treat other people and how people treat you. I've never suffered like African Americans or poor people do with stereotyping, so i've never truly been affected by stereotypes. I'm a typical white girl living in the suburbs. I'm not the skinniest, I wear the same few black outfits everyday because i dont have the confidence to wear anything else. People stereotype me as to lazy to wear anything else and are standoffish to talk to me because they think i will mean due to my RBF. But what I went through was nothing my friend ilana had to go through. Ilana was a 15 year old girl who moved from Dubai, United Arab Emirates to Cedar Park, Texas as a new incoming Freshman. Her ethnicity is Afrikaans, which is a White South...

Mary Melony From 'Lamb To The Slaughter'

...husband.” (Daul 14.) As no one could ever predict such a sweet and caring pregnant housewife to think so clearly after a murder, much like a experienced and sophisticated criminal. We would have expected to mourn, cry, beg for him to open his eyes, yet seconds after she is playing out her devious, yet intelligent plan, which makes her very unpredictable on what she will do next. Mary had also done a very clever action by luring the officers to eat up the lamb, which is the murder weapon that killed Patrick. After that, she had gotten away with her murder, which no one can suspect of her, not even the police, which states in the story: “...... God bless his soul if I allowed you to remain in his house without offering you decent hospitality. Why dont you eat up that lamb that’s in the oven? It’ll be cooked up just by now.” (Daul 17.) Organizational Behavior

...Final Exam Organizational Culture Creativity and Change Dr. Michelle Zimmerman Yidong Yuan A. Basic Human Processes: Perception and Learning As stated on our book, social perception is the process through which people select, organize, and interpret the information around them as it pertains to other people. According to social identity theory, the way we perceive others and ourselves is based on both our own unique characteristics (known as personal identity) and our membership in various groups (known as social identity) (Greenberg, 2011). The process of attribution involves judging the underlying reasons for people’s behavior. Some of our judgments are based on inferences made on the basis of observing others’ behavior. These judgments, known as correspondent inferences, are often inaccurate. Our search for explanations about the causes of others’ behavior leads us to make either judgments of internal causality (the individual is responsible for his own actions) or external causality (someone or something else is responsible). Kelley’s theory of causal attribution explains that such judgments will be based on three types of information: consensus (whether others act in a similar manner), consistency (whether the individual previously acted this way in the same situation), and distinctiveness (whether this person acted similarly in different situations) (Greenberg, 2011). Several types of systematic errors, known as perceptual biases, limit the accuracy of social...

The Road- Mccarthy

...Characters: The man (the father, called Papa) travels the road with his young son. He believes he has been appointed by God to protect the boy, and he does so at all costs, even killing another human being in order to save his son. Unlike his son, the man remains deeply suspicious and even paranoid of other individuals and their intentions, understandably. He is loath to approach other travelers on the road to offer them assistance, while the boy often wishes that he would. The man grows sicker throughout the novel, and his illness is manifested in his persistent cough and bloody spit. At the end of The Road, the man dies next to a stream in a clearing in the woods. The boy is born into the post-apocalyptic world. He knows nothing about the world before the catastrophe. He travels the road with his father and believes that he and his father are the "good guys" who carry the fire. In various encounters with other travelers on the road, the boy continually displays his faith in humanity and his humbling trust in others. Despite their near brushes with brutal violence and death, the boy consistently pleads with his father to help others in need. After his father's death, the boy is rescued by a family of people who assert that they are also the good guys. The wife of the man who is the protagonist has already died, and her situation is only described in flashbacks. She chose to avoid rape and murder, which she believed were inevitable, by committing suicide. She used a...
