Many college students live in dorms on their school campus, or in an apartment near the campus. There is a small amount of students that decide to go to school close to home, and live at home with their parents. Those students that live on campus or near campus have the responsibilities of feeding themselves, having to find a way of making their own money, and also lack close supervision from their parents. Students living on campus have to find ways to support themselves. For most students that support comes from finding a job. Finding a job is usually the first and best way for them to support themselves. For students living on their own it can sometimes be financially hard. Most students in that position seek help from the school, and get financial Aid. Financial Aid helps students cover things like rent, book, and other expenses. However for students that live at home have a different way of getting money. Those students most of the time have the support of their parents. With the help their parents it is easier for the students to afford books, and other school supplies. Some students who live at home sometimes still get help from the school financial aid program. With help from parents and financial aid, students that live at home may be more financially stable. Students that live by themselves also have to find ways to feed themselves. Just about every college in the country does not allow students to cook in dorms due to fire safety issues. Most students that live on campus can go to the school’s cafeteria to get food. With that being said the choices of what they want to eat is very limited. Students can go off campus to get food, but that can be expensive as well. Eating the schools food or going out to eat may not be as healthy either. As for students who still live at home feeding themselves may be easier. Being at home provides them with a

Dorm Life vs. Home Life

...period of college education faces the decision to either stay at home or go away for school. The transition from home to dorm life can be seen as one of the most important events in a young persons life, because it is the first extreme life change. Home life and dorm life represent two different ways of living as well as different conditions. Nevertheless, they both have their similarities and oppositions, which can be illustrated only after a deep analysis of both lifestyles. On-campus dormitories may be a pleasant experience for one person and a terrible test for another. First of all, any individual living in the dorms will have to face the reality of rooming with up to three other people. At times dealing with others can be a pain, especially if they are uncooperative. Secondly, the dorms do not provide the individuals with an actual kitchen and contains a small space for refrigerating food. This means that students have to eat in the cafeteria where the food may not be the best quality. Thirdly, the dorms are very small. The average dorm is 12ft by 19ft, which is supposed to house two people and all of their belongings, such as clothes and electronics. Being cramped inside a room can be very uncomfortable as there is little to no privacy because of the closeness of everyone. Living on campus is vastly different than living at home. Home living is another option sometimes chosen by young people. First of all, home living allows the student to have access to healthy food, freshly...

Commuting vs Dorming

...December 2012 Commuting vs. Dorming The hardest decision a student has to make during their senior year of high school is which school to attend and whether to live on campus or commute. There are both advantages and disadvantages to both scenarios. The entire college experience is a learning trip and it is oftentimes a young adults first step towards independence. Living on campus is an adjustment and is a huge eye-opener to the real world. The college dorm life is considered to be part of the "full college experience," but the costs of living in a residence hall can persuade students to remain home while they are in college in order to avoid housing fees. The biggest advantage of living on campus is that it gives you a chance to gain independence. Some students know they want to move out of the house but aren't quite sure they're ready to have their own apartments. Living on campus can provide an in-between step (Lyons 1). Students will still be living on their own and responsible for taking care of their living space, it just wont be as overwhelming as paying rent and everything else that comes with owning an apartment. Another great thing about living on campus is you are much closer to your classes so it will take much less time to get there. Being able to get to and from classes more quickly means students living on campus will also have more time to devote to getting their coursework done (Lyons 1). One main advantage of living in a dorm is that companions always...

Wave Novel Study

...Independent Novel Study: Wave Part A: Plot 1. The point of view in which the story is written is of Sam and Beth Brooks, two siblings who have been separated at Christmas in 2004, with Sam on vacation away from home and Beth forcibly staying at university for a swim meet that she must attend. I believe that the author chose to write from these perspectives because both characters are greatly affected greatly by the main plot, though dealing with it in two different situations. Sam is experiencing the entire story from Phuket, Thailand, where they are hit with a tsunami. Beth was in New York at her dorm, first learning about the tsunami from her boyfriend, Tad. Both characters have different feelings about what has happened, and we, as the readers, get to hear both perspectives. 2. The story takes place on the one hand in Phuket, Thailand during Christmas break of 2004, and on the other side of the world in New York, where Beth's dorm and university are located. The difference that the setting makes is that if most of the characters were not located in Thailand where the tsunami happened, and majority of the story did not take place there, we would only be privy to secondary information of what was happening. Beth was only able to watch the huge tsunami unfold on television, being an unbelievable 27-hour flight away from the wave. Sam having been in Phuket even before the tidal wave hit was a primary witness...

Living at Home vs Living on Your Own

...Living at Home Vs Living on Your Own Many students are faced with tough choices to make at a very young age. Even before you graduate you have to pick everything from what you're going to wear today to what school you are going to spend the next four or more years at. Many young adults choose to attend college near their home and have to decide whether you are going to live at your parents or move into an apartment or dorm. Several pro's and con's partake in coming to a decision on where you will lay your head every night. Living at home is the more practical of the two solutions; you don't have to pay rent, home cooked meals and less responsibility are the great perks. However, living on your own leads to freedom from parental control, lack of privacy, and an opportunity to mature. First of all, choosing to stay at your parent’s house while in school can save you a lot of money in the long run. When you are living in an apartment; rent, water, electricity, cable and internet bills can stack up quickly and put a ton of financial strain on you. In most cases, having the luxury of staying to live at home, those bills are nonexistent or very limited. Without the mountain of bills, which weigh you down, you will have more money to spend on the things you want to do. In contrast, if you were to take on the financial responsibility of living on your own, you will create the opportunity to have more freedom. Being in your parents may save you money; however, living on your own...

Obesity Epidemic In America

...The obesity epidemic started in the late 1970’s when technology started to arise and life in the home started to change. Many children became latchkey kids because both of the parents worked. Processed food became more and more common when women started to work for convenience. Jane Brody, the author of Attacking the Obesity Epidemic by First Figuring Out Its Cause explains that “the foods were rich in sugar, salt and fat, substances that humans are evolutionarily programmed to crave” (41). This is the reason processed foods became so popular so quickly. Also, processed foods were very cheap. Brody further states, “Americans are not known for resisting such temptations, especially if money is tight”(41). Eating out became increasingly popular and the portion size grew. According to the online article Portion Size, Then vs. Now, the unbelievable statistics showed that, “the average size bagel twenty years ago was three inches in diameter and today’s bagel is six inches. Additionally, a McDonald’s cheeseburger increased in size and weight by 500%.” Expanding portion sizes are a very important contribution to the rise of obesity in America...

Dell is a company that came from humble beginnings, the brainchild of the technologically savvy mind of Michael Dell in 1983 in his dorm room at the University of Texas. Michael Dell enrolled in the pre-med program at the urging of his parents who had a desire from him to become a doctor. Within the first year he was earning $80,000 per month, which prompted him to drop out of school and begin his company entitled PC's LTD, selling PC's and PC components (MHHE.com, 1999). The strategy he employed was one of creating and distributing his IBM compatible clones directly to the consumer, cutting out the large retail mark-up. This strategy was so successful, that by the end of the fiscal year 1986, his sales had reached $33 million dollars. This paper will examine Dell Inc., their financial ratios and plans for the future and whether it is a reasonable choice for potential investors. The company that was started in a dorm room in Texas, grew fast, but Mr. Dell soon realized there was areas lacking that would be needed if he were to achieve his goal, which to become one of the top 3 PC companies in the world (MHHE.com, 1999). Matching Markets and Auctions

These two might sound unfamiliar to many people, although they appear in our life almost on daily basis, we just do not usually recognize them. Matching Markets Markets can be thought as a prime example of network structured interaction between people (usually sellers and buyers) who interact with each other. A few of the basic examples of matchmaking from everyday life are marriage, applicants and colleges, students and dormitory rooms, students and universities, doctors and hospitals, and so on. Of course normally there are some constrains, otherwise there would be no need for any kind of market. For instance an organ donor’s blood type must be compatible with the patient’s, or a student has some expectations toward the available dormitories. Finding the best match The procedure of finding the best match is relatively easy when only one side of the market has preferences over its matches, like in the mentioned student-dorm example. In that case each student apply for the most desired room. However, real life is not in an ideal world, it often happens that not all or none of them gets the...

Merchandising

...merchandising Definition Activities aimed at quick retail sale of goods using bundling, display techniques, free samples, on-the-spotdemonstration, pricing, shelf talkers, special offers, and other point-of-sale methods. According to AmericanMarketing Association, merchandising encompasses "planning involved in marketing the right merchandise orservice at the right place, at the right time, in the rightquantities, and at the right price." Merchandising means selling products to retail customers. Merchandisers, also called retailers, buy products from wholesalers and manufacturers, add a markup or gross profit amount, and sell the products to consumers at a higher price than what they paid. When you go to the mall, all the stores there are retailers, and you are a retail customer. Retailers deal with an inventory: all the goods (products) they have for sale. They account for inventory purchases and sales in one of two ways: Periodic and Perpetual. As the names suggest these methods refer to how often the inventory account balances are updated. In a Periodic system, inventory account balances are updated once a year (some companies may do it more often, but all must do so at least once per year). In a Perpetual system, inventory account balances are updated after each sale. This type of system is much more complex. Scanning cash registers, bar coded merchandise, and similar devices are used to update the inventory records after each sale. Obviously, this ...

Consumer demographics, purchasing habits, along with wants and needs, are all used to understand the potential market. Research on these topics is vital to the structure of effective advertising. By forming our focus groups we searched for deeper knowledge in the needs of paint shoppers and in the surveys we looked for more reasons people purchase paint and brand loyalty. We examined responses from painting professionals in order to compare results from nonprofessionals to see if these varied in any manner. The objective for getting into the Wal-Mart store was to pass out intercept surveys to the Wal-Mart shoppers. From the focus groups we found being able to match color, not having to apply many layers, customer service, quality, cost, and odor free are important to many shoppers along with word of mouth recommendations, however brand is not a concern. They believe adding jingles, and celebrities to a commercial will get people to buy the paint, and they would like to...

Black Panther Party

...The Black Panthers vs. The Black Panthers The sixties was a time in American society where the youth from the post-war baby boom era became teenagers and the young adults. The movement from the conservative fifties continued and eventually resulted in the revolutionary ways of thinking and change in the cultural of the American way of life. With an extreme admiration of no longer being an image of their predeceasing generation, young Americans wanted and demanded change. These changes affected education, values, laws, entertainment, and the way of life for several citizens around the country. As society, it is extremely important to understand that although the valiant efforts and impact that African American’s had, particularly in the 1950’s and 1960’s, in helping restructure American culture, many of the racist views of the past still play apart in American society. The 1950’s is often described as the calm before the storm of the 1960’s. During this time period, society was very much conformed to the views of conservative living. The desire for security during this era, reinforced by McCarthyism at home and the Korean War, created was known as the cold war culture. During the post WWII period in America, the face of the nation changed greatly under President Truman and Eisenhower. Because of extreme paranoia caused by Communism following WWII, conformity in the United States became an ideal way to distinguish American culture from the rest of the world. Conformity...
