Chattel Slavery; Douglas pointed out that He experienced the cruelty of slavery when his own aunt was being beaten mercilessly and wonders if he will be next. As an adult he writes that he realizes that this was one of the first times he really became aware that he was enslaved and what the horrors of that position entailed. He saw the injustice and the cruelty and was forever scarred. His world-view grew at that moment as he became aware of what outrages could be perpetrated against an innocent slave. Douglas narrative as a whole, records serval brutality of slavery. Douglass's aunt was not the only slave who was beaten, and Douglass was not the only child who grew up without a mother. The Narrative captures the universality of slavery, with its vicious slaveholders and its innocent and aggrieved slaves. Slave songs gave vent to the truest expressions of the experience of slavery in antebellum America. Douglass recalls listening to them as a child and not quite understanding their depth of sorrow and meaning, but tells his readers that now he comprehends them and believes that they are able to invoke sympathy and arouse anger in their listeners. He writes that he cannot escape their mournful tones and seeks to correct the erroneous assumption of whites that slaves sang because they were happy. This could not be more incorrect, as slaves sang to express their melancholy, their impatience, their fear, their loss.
Double Consciousness: Double consciousness is a concept that Du Bois first explores in 1903 publication, “The Souls of Black Folk”. Double consciousness describes the individual sensation of feeling as though your identity is divided into several parts, making it difficult or impossible to have one unified identity. Du Bois spoke of this within the context of race relations in the United States. He asserted that since American blacks have

...doubled in the first 6 months does not mean that someone gets a bonus or is put on probation. There is not enough information given in this question to warrant such action. This type of action is jumping to conclusions and assuming without the evidence to substantiate such an action. What would warrant such action of probation would be if this has happened before, and the correct training has been provided, inefficiencies have been documented, and the employee(s) have been counseled verbally and written counsel has been documented. What this does mean is that there is a challenging issue and the root cause of this issue needs to be found. An investigation is in order to figure out and understand what is causing the accounts receivable to double. This also raises the question as to why it has taken six months to figure out that there is an issue. Since accounts receivable is made up of what monies are owed to the organization from such examples like the patients copayments or payments for service, insurance companies or third party payers, part of the investigation should include what is outstanding or what kind of credit has been given to raise the amount of outstanding days for the accounts receivable. Also before the investigation is closed and hopefully the root cause of this issue is found, policies and procedures may need to be revisited since it is evident that what is in place is either not working or not being...

...accounting and its use within a business organization. As I’ve stated in a few of my posts during the week, before this course I was clueless to the world of accounting. I’ve had my assumptions, all of which are being proven to be wrong. My first assumption is that accountants were all nerds and that it was boring. Which either means I’m a nerd or this is actually an interesting and informative class; I believe it’s the latter. The required readings for the week were chapters one and three, which help lay the groundwork for the rest of the class. I scoured the Internet and found that accounting is everywhere and has been for quite some time. For hundreds of years accounting has been around and used daily. The Venetians started using the double booking method in the 15th century. They used it with the ships and merchants in their harbors in order to keep track of all that was going on. Like I stated in my post, I like history. When I understand the history of something and how it got started, I tend to comprehend the class work more. I also used YouTube, which again has proven its’ value. The accounting videos were slightly on the dry side, but I stuck it out. I also tend to learn more from a video than I do in a text. I find it to be more interactive thus keeping my attention for longer spans. Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed this as much as I...

Kroger Versus Publix

...enjoy is coupons that are fifty cents or lower are doubled every day. It is interesting that it is more important for Kroger to save money by eliminating this courtesy to the customers. Publix also accepts Kroger coupons; whereas, Kroger does not accept Publix coupons. Kroger intends on lowering the prices on items in the store versus doubling coupons. This policy could be viewed as positive or negative. If lowering prices is reducing prices by five or ten cents, customers may be highly upset and begin to shop elsewhere. The change of policy for Publix has positive intent, but Kroger’s policy can be viewed negative or positive based on the customer’s beliefs. References: Prosser, F. (2013). Norcross's Argumentative Essay

... In the argument Norcross wrote about two different but similar stories to prove his point. In the first story a man was in an accident that had damaged his godiva gland, which means his body can no longer produce the hormone cocoamone and he can no longer taste chocolate. Knowing that humans do not produce cocoamone he finds out that puppies do when they are under intense stress and severe trauma. This man loves chocolate so much he abuses puppies to death so he can taste chocolate again. In the argument it’s clear that this mans life is not on the line if he cannot taste chocolate. He just wants to enjoy the taste of chocolate and he doesn’t seem to care that puppies are suffering for his pleasure. In the second story Norcross addresses factory raised meat that people purchase. Animals that are raised on a factory farm live in highly stressed, abusive, and cramped areas. He makes a clear point to people who would make the excuse of there one purchase making an affect. He proves to them that one out of ten thousand can safe 25 chickens lives. He clarifies that one person can start to make a difference. Norcross states in both of these situations people do not need these to survive. If they were to stop eating chocolate or factory raised meat their health would probably be better off. Machans argument is over wether or not animals should have rights or liberation. Machan talks about the morality of natural rights and the utilitarian for animals. He states...

Also it will discuss case in which involved the Fifth Amendment and how it was used to protect the citizens of several cases and how the people were protected with the Fifth Amendment rule inside the system of law. Double jeopardy is a procedural defense that forbids a defendant from being tried again on the same charges following a legitimate acquittal or conviction. In most countries with the common law rule most criminals are allowed to enter a plea of not guilty or autrefois acquit, which is a French law meaning a person has been found not guilty of the same charge in a previous trial with the same evidence and cannot be retried for the same crime regardless of what new evidence that has surfaced. Dealing with a Defiant Child

...Dealing with a defiant child can be tricky. Every person, especially children, learn differently. Because of this, every child does not necessarily react the same way to certain “punishments” as other children. I have run a daycare out of my home for several years. While some children can be easily redirected to doing a different task, other children needed to be placed in “time out” in order for them to calm down. I have two children. A 12 year old daughter who is in honors class and a 5 year old autistic daughter. While my 12 year old daughter was always very mellow, I could correct her behavior by simply redirecting her or talking with her about her actions. If it became severe enough for punishment, it would seem to shatter her world. She would be devastated. My 5 year old, however, is a different story. She does not grasp the concept of discussing what it is she is having a difficult time with, and redirection only frustrates her. The only real way to get through to her is for her to see real consequences to her actions (ie: taking away toys and/or privileges, seeing that her actions have hurt her friends, etc.). Because she has a behavior disability, it can be quite challenging when dealing with her defiance. I feel both redirection and punishment are excellent ways to help in dealing with a defiant child. Depending on the child’s personality, one method may work while the other will not even faze them. It is up to us, as adults, to decipher the children’s learning...

Imagine

...Imagine by John Lennon Joel F. Doan Martin Davis ENG-242 Tuesday, March 27, 2012 I have read and understand the plagiarism policy as outlined in the syllabus and the sections in the Student Catalog relating to the IWU Honesty/Cheating Policy. By affixing this statement to the title page of my paper, I certify that I have not cheated or plagiarized in the process of completing this assignment. If it is found that cheating and/or plagiarism did take place in the writing of this paper, I understand the possible consequences of the act/s, which could include expulsion from Indiana Wesleyan University. Imagine by John Lennon It was difficult for me to write about John Lennon's song, Imagine, and not about John himself, the Beatles, Liverpool, Yoko Ono, New York, his assassination, or anything else. This song, as conceived and as first recorded, is deceptively simple. It consists of a short intro on piano, two verses, a chorus, a third verse, and a repeat of the chorus, followed by a brief 'play out' which is more or less a recap of the intro, turned to close on the tonic chord. But the song has inner strength. The simplicity is indeed deceptive. There are subtleties in the structure and execution. Also, the lyric, though superficially platitudinous, never oversteps itself, and is in fact genuinely challenging to the open mind. Imagine is in the key of C Major, the simplest key in western music. The four bar intro is alternate bars of C (the tonic) and F (the subdominant)...

Jazz Concert Review

...In my life generally music plays very significant role - makes it colorful. I have always enjoyed listening to sounds which calm me down and maintain positive emotions. Although jazz music has never been my biggest interest, after I started learning about it in class I began to wonder about phenomena of Jazz. Surprisingly I found out it made me bobbin my head and feel warm inside. The performance I attended was at B.B King Blues Club and Grill located on near Times Square. This neighborhood means you will be battling with pretty big crowd but the place was generally pleasant and accommodating. The band played in a style of Ornette Coleman, known as one of the major innovators of the free jazz movement of the 1960’s. The band consisted four saxophones (2 altos, 1 tenor, 1 baritone) two trombones, three trumpets and instruments for setting rhythm. It was beautiful to see it life, all together, performing so professionally. The pieces were easy to listen to which was unexpected to me. The two songs that caught my attention were “Lonely woman” from 1959 and “Dancing in your head” from 1988. In the song “Lonely woman” I noticed many improvisations and solos. The beginning of the song reminded me of Brass Band’s funeral march from New Olean’s style. On the other hand, in the song “Dancing in your head” I noticed that instruments were not playing together, but they were improvising. I believe this style might be called ‘cool jazz’, which we were introduce to on our last class...

As far as you know, idiomatic expressions make English become colorful and full of vitality, so they are often used very much in the native speakers’ speech and in the writing such as news, songs, movies, etc. on the television. However, these idioms are sometimes are not easy to understand and study their meanings, so I decide to study them by studying Vietnamese and English idioms containing the word ‘dog’ and one another reason for this topic to study is that I really like lovely dogs. In my studying this topic, there are two parts such as theoretical background and Vietnamese and English idioms related to the word ‘dog’ which is the main part of my topic. Theoretical background Idioms versus proverbs Idioms and proverbs are frequently used in the daily speech, so we can not find the differences between them clearly. However, we can distinguish idioms and proverbs by basing on some criteria. Idioms * It is a fixed group of words. e.g. the idiom ‘chó chui gầm chạn’ has the same meaning of the word ‘hèn hạ’ (disgraced)....
