...Basic Principles and Functions of Electrical Machines O.I. Okoro, Ph.D.1*, M.U. Agu, Ph.D.1, and E. Chinkuni, Ph.D.2 1 Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State, Nigeria * E-mail: oiokoro@hotmail.com 2 Polytechnic University of Namibia, Windhoek, Namibia E-mail: chikuni@yahoo.com ABSTRACT Recent advances in power electronics and highspeed microprocessors have led to considerable attention in electrical machines with regard to their applications in industrial drives. This paper brings to the fore, various types of electrical machines, their operations, and applications, as well as the method of determining their parameters. Various ways of protecting electric machines against overloads and mechanical faults are also highlighted. It is anticipated that the work presented in this paper will be of immense benefit to practicing engineers especially in areas of machine design, maintenance, and protection. (Keywords: electrical machines, operation design, maintenance, protection, stator) the stator and alternating currents are induced in the rotor by transformer action. In the synchronous machine, direct current is supplied to the rotor and Alternating Current (A.C.) flows in the stator. On the other hand, a D.C. machine is a machine that is excited from D.C. sources only or that itself acts as a source of D.C. [5]. It is a common practice in industry to employ A.C. motors whenever they are inherently suitable or can be given appropriate characteristics...

...IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON POWER DELIVERY, VOL. 25, NO. 3, JULY 2010 1637 A Novel Three-Phase to Five-Phase Transformation Using a Special Transformer Connection Atif Iqbal, Member, IEEE, Shaikh Moinuddin, Member, IEEE, M. Rizwan Khan, Sk. Moin Ahmed, Student Member, IEEE, and Haithem Abu-Rub, Senior Member, IEEE Abstract—The first five-phase induction motor drive system was proposed in the late 1970s for adjustable speed drive applications. Since then, a considerable research effort has been in place to develop commercially feasible multiphase drive systems. Since the three-phase supply is available from the grid, there is a need to develop a static phase transformation system to obtain a multiphase supply from the available three-phase supply. Thus, this paper proposes a novel transformer connection scheme to convert the threephase grid supply to a five-phase fixed voltage and fixed frequency supply. The proposed transformer connection outputs five phases and, thus, can be used in applications requiring a five-phase supply. Currently, the five-phase motor drive is a commercially viable solution. The five-phase transmission system can be investigated further as an efficient solution for bulk power transfer. The connection scheme is elaborated by using the simulation and experimental approach to prove the viability of the implementation. The geometry of the fabricated transformer is elaborated in this paper. Index Terms—Five phase, multiphase, three phase, transformer, ...

Cal Tech Benefits

...was my pick for a private university because of its highly rated engineering classes. I've been to Las Vegas a couple times when my family and I would visit my uncle in Pasadena. I enjoy visiting my uncle however sometimes I can’t really stand the heat in Pasadena buts it great weather for swims as Sunnyvale is which would be great if I go to college there as I’m accustomed to living in the same environment. Another benefit of going to California Institute of technology(from here on out it's going to be referred as Cal Tech) is that the living cost won't be as expensive for me as I have a relative I can stay with. Most likely on breaks and some weekends, I can go and visit my family as it's about an hour drive from Pasadena to Sunnyvale. However this leads me to another problem as if I want to go to places other than my parent’s house, then I would actually need to buy a car. I was just planning on going to Cal Tech by bike as this would save me money since I don’t have my own car, as well as gas. However I’m pretty sure if getting a car as well as paying...

Innovating Out of the Crisis

...Innovating out of the crisis Free Guide To Improve Machine Tools Productivity Contains useful recipes for machine tools builders Innovating out of the crisis – Useful recipes for machine tools builders Table of contents An unprecedented recession 3 Improved thermal stability of new motor technology raises spindle productivity and machining quality 3 Conventional motor technology suffers from major drawbacks 3 Benefits of synchronous spindles 4 Thinking out of the box and engineering bespoke solutions can pay beyond expectations 8 Innovation as a powerful mean of differentiation 9 An unprecedented recession Since the downturn in 2008, the machine tools industry, like many other manufacturing industries, has suffered from an unprecedented crisis which has shaken the strongest companies, not only in Europe and the USA but also Asia. Machine tools OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) saw their sales plummet by up to 65% in the wake of the decline of their customer markets, such as automobile manufacturing. The crisis, made worse by the decline in lending, effectively stopped all capital investment over the last couple of years. With such low turnovers, none of the classical cost reduction measures like short time working, inventory reduction and efficiency measures was enough to avoid negative earnings. In contrast, the traditional industry challenges of improved machining quality, reduced machine costs and improved end user operating costs...

Ward-Leonard Control System

...Ward-Leonard Motor Generation System Introduction: A control system generally controls, regulates, and updates its output continuously based on present inputs, nature of the system, and the past outputs. In other words, there is a feedback mechanism that is inherent in the system, and is called a closed loop control system. For example, adding an emitter resistance to a common emitter amplifier, results in a negative feedback mechanism in the amplifier system – if the output current increases, the input voltage decreases accordingly so as to reduce the output current; if the output current decreases, then the input voltage increases in order to raise the output current level. Negative feedback thus ensures that the output is always controlled to stay within an optimal range. Similarly other systems may exhibit a positive feedback mechanism. In either case, a control system can be represented as follows: Figure 1: Control System representation In Figure 1, G represents the forward loop function and Fb represents the feedback function. In case the Fb function is absent, the system is reduced to an open loop system. The most popular representation of control systems is using the ‘Block Diagram’ approach (Balakrishnan, 1988). Each component in the system is represented as a block, with its role represented as a mathematical function. From the block diagram representation, the overall function of the system, called the transfer function, is obtained. The transfer function...
