Drowsy Chaperone Play Review #1
Joseph Daniele: Period 8
Crystal Lake South's performance of The Drowsy Chaperone was produced quite well. I had some prior knowledge of the play due to being in 8th hour Dramatic Literature, but I was still heavily unaware of what I was paying to go see on Saturday, March 3rd. The combination of the classic "Portillos" music, record skips, smooth transitions, and especially Lexis's (Janet Van De Graff) performance. It all demonstrated the true talent within the Crystal Lake High School students that I was completely oblivious to. One of the main aspects of the show is the Man in the Chair, Neal, he has to articulate his genuine feelings for musical theatre and theatre alike. Neal did this successfully by putting on the persona of a man whose current life is dedicated to his theatrical records. Neal also had some performances along with his acting that showed that he could truly play the role of the Man in the Chair. Another outstanding performer was Janet Van De Graff (Played by Lexis). Lexis stood out over everyone else in my opinion because her ability to sing, dance and act was on another level in comparison to the other actors. I have known who Lexis is for many years and never did it occur to me that she could be the person that would 'steal the show' so to speak. In contrast with the performances, the music of that particular time period both caught me off guard and caught my attention. Considering the many times I have dined at Portillos, the classical jazz type of music has become more appealing to my ears, which allowed me to enjoy the play in its entirety. Going backstage on the Friday before the show, I figured I might be able to predict certain effects and such on the day of the show. I was definitely wrong. Two main theatrical effects stuck out to me. My favorite being the few 'record skips' throughout the show. The precision of those record skips must not have been easy to time during rehearsals; it was executed beautifully with the lighting combined by the actors repeat actions. I would not consider the second an 'effect', but it is still notable; the transitions between changing the stage setting, and getting actors/actresses off or on the stage was executed in a smooth rhythm without any distractions. Seeing the performance of The Drowsy Chaperone at Crystal Lake South gave me a different perspective of my High School. Usually, I'm opposed to anything CLS related due to a number of other occurrences throughout my high school career, but seeing the abilities displayed on March 3rd really gave me a chance to view my fellow (theatre-related) classmates for who they are. To which I learned that they are a group of especially talented kids that should not be underestimated.

The Hunger Games

...To Annalena Part One "The Tributes" When I wake up, the other side of the bed is cold. My fingers stretch out, seeking Prim’s warmth but finding only the rough canvas cover of the mattress. She must have had bad dreams and climbed in with our mother. Of course, she did. This is the day of the reaping. I prop myself up on one elbow. There’s enough light in the bedroom to see them. My little sister, Prim, curled up on her side, cocooned in my mother’s body, their cheeks pressed together. In sleep, my mother looks younger, still worn but not so beaten-down. Prim’s face is as fresh as a raindrop, as lovely as the primrose for which she was named. My mother was very beautiful once, too. Or so they tell me. Sitting at Prim’s knees, guarding her, is the world’s ugliest cat. Mashed-in nose, half of one ear missing, eyes the color of rotting squash. Prim named him Buttercup, insisting that his muddy yellow coat matched the bright flower. I le hates me. Or at least distrusts me. Even though it was years ago, I think he still remembers how I tried to drown him in a bucket when Prim brought him home. Scrawny kitten, belly swollen with worms, crawling with fleas. The last thing I needed was another mouth to feed. But Prim begged so hard, cried even, I had to let him stay. It turned out okay. My mother got rid of the vermin and he’s a born mouser. Even catches the occasional rat. Sometimes, when I clean a kill, I feed Buttercup the entrails. He has stopped hissing at me. Entrails...
