Introduction

Utilitarianism is one of the most powerful and persuasive approaches to normative ethics in the history of philosophy. Though not fully articulated until the 19th century, proto-utilitarian positions can be discerned throughout the history of ethical theory.
Though there are many varieties of the view discussed, utilitarianism is generally held to be the view that the morally right action is the action that produces the most good. There are many ways to spell out this general claim. One thing to note is that the theory is a form of consequentialism: the right action is understood entirely in terms of consequences produced. What distinguishes utilitarianism from egoism has to do with the scope of the relevant consequences. On the utilitarian view one ought to maximize the overall good — that is, consider the good of others as well as one's own good.
The Classical Utilitarians, Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill, identified the good with pleasure, so, like Epicurus, were hedonists about value. They also held that we ought to maximize the good, that is, bring about ‘the greatest amount of good for the greatest number’.
Utilitarianism is also distinguished by impartiality and agent-neutrality. Everyone's happiness counts the same. When one maximizes the good, it is the good impartially considered. My good counts for no more than anyone else's good. Further, the reason I have to promote the overall good is the same reason anyone else has to so promote the good. It is not peculiar

...Elantra Staten Dr. McMullen English 101-2 10-29-13 Journal Response A Rose for Emily A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner was a very intriguing short story. It captured to life of an elderly lady who has lost her father and the only man she loved is assumed to be a homosexual. The story is about the power of love and loneliness. Emily lost her father at a young age, the only man that she ever knew, and was forced to live a life on her own. Emily had to overcome the death of her father in the eye of the town. The thought of being judged by others after the death of a close relative can be a lot to handle. The town wanted Emily to move on, and when she did so she was judged as well. Loneliness mixed with love drove Emily to the end; she was not a crazy, nor deranged elderly lady. She was deserted and in grief, she killed Homer Barron only so she would not have to face the darkness of being alone all over again. Emily did not have any one to talk to after her father’s death which forced her to keep all of the hurt and pain inside. Homer Barron showed her love and then took it away after he abandoned her. “That was two years after her father's death and a short time after her sweetheart--the one we believed would marry her --had deserted her…” The thought of being left alone drove Emily to kill Homer Barron and that she did. This is why I have come to the conclusion that Emily killed Homer out of wanting to be loved and comforted. The rumors of Homer being gay did not...

...Chapter 1 Amir will narrate the whole book, except for Chapter 16, which is narrated by Rahim Khan. This first chapter is very cryptic if you haven't read the rest of the book, or at least read a summary of the plot. There, we've warned you. Amir tells us something happened in the winter of 1975 and this event made him what he is today. He gives us some scattered images: a crumbling mud wall, an alley, a frozen creek. Amir remembers a phone call last summer from his friend Rahim Khan. He feels like a past of "unatoned sins" is calling him up. So he takes a walk and looks at some kites, which remind him of someone named Hassan. During the walk, Amir sits on a park bench. He thinks of Baba and Ali, and Kabul, Afghanistan. The chapter ends where it began: "I thought of the life I had lived until the winter of 1975 came along and changed everything. And made me what I am today" (1.3). Chapter 2 This chapter is a slideshow of Amir's early childhood. Fasten the seatbelts on your recliners! Amir and Hassan get into harmless mischief together as kids. Hassan often takes the blame if the two troublemakers get caught. Amir describes his childhood home, built by his father. It has rosebushes, marble floors, mosaic tiles, and gold-stitched tapestries. Oh, and a crystal chandelier. Baba, Amir's father, has a smoking room in the house but he doesn't let Amir hang out there. Go away, Amir. Some of Baba's cabinets have a few pictures: Amir's grandfather and King Nadir Shah and one of Amir's...

SB01319. _ FB0901 Microsoft: from an Organizational Behavior perspective Software giant Microsoft is 36 years old and struggling. The competitive landscape faced by Microsoft today consists primarily of companies founded after 1998. In addition to the obvious age disparity, there are various (and well documented) differences in organizational structure, company culture, and product orientation that are motivating significant changes in Microsoft’s approach to leadership. Namely, our analysis will address changes in power distribution and culture in order to assess Microsoft’s position in the market relative to Google, Facebook, Apple, etc. After Bill Gates left his post in 2000, Steve Ballmer took over as chief executive officer and Ray Ozzie was brought in as chief software architect. As of 2008, Gates was practically phased out, and began dedicating most of his time to his non-profit. Some critics describe Gates’ move as avoidance of the innovator’s dilemma, suggesting that he left while Microsoft was at its best. Since 2000, we have seen Apple and Google rise above Microsoft with an ever-widening gap in stock price and market share, effectively ‘cornering’ the incumbent. Comparing financials among these technology giants clearly shows that Microsoft is struggling to keep pace with its rival brands. But what qualitative evidence complements this claim? We can begin to shed some light on the issue by considering...

...n academic publishing, a paper is an academic work that is usually published in an academic journal. It contains original research results or reviews existing results. Such a paper, also called an article, will only be considered valid if it undergoes a process of peer review by one or more referees (who are academics in the same field) who check that the content of the paper is suitable for publication in the journal. A paper may undergo a series of reviews, revisions and re-submissions before finally being accepted or rejected for publication. This process typically takes several months. Next there is often a delay of many months (or in some subjects, over a year) before an accepted manuscript appears. This is particularly true for the most popular journals where the number of accepted articles often outnumbers the space for printing. Due to this, many academics self-archive a 'pre-print' copy of their paper for free download from their personal or institutional website. Some journals, particularly newer ones, are now published in electronic form only. Paper journals are now generally made available in electronic form as well, both to individual subscribers, and to libraries. Almost always these electronic versions are available to subscribers immediately upon publication of the paper version, or even before; sometimes they are also made available to non-subscribers, either immediately (by open access journals) or after an embargo of anywhere from two to twenty-four months...

...bubbies bubbies asdf asldfa asdf asdf sade fsd f adssf dsads asdf asd fsad fsdfd In humans, defecation may occur (depending on the individual and the circumstances) from once every two or three days to several times a day. Extensive hardening of the feces may cause prolonged interruption in the routine and is called constipation. Human fecal matter varies significantly in appearance, depending on diet and health. Normally it is semisolid, with a mucus coating. Its brown coloration comes from a combination of bile and bilirubin, which comes from dead red blood cells. In newborn babies, fecal matter is initially yellow/green after the meconium. This coloration comes from the presence of bile alone. In time, as the body starts expelling bilirubin from dead red blood cells, it acquires its familiar brown appearance, unless the baby is breast feeding, in which case it remains soft, pale yellowish, and not completely malodorous until the baby begins to eat significant amounts of other food. Throughout the life of an ordinary human, one may experience many types of feces. A "green" stool is from rapid transit of feces through the intestines (or the consumption of certain blue or green food dyes in quantity), and "clay-like" appearance to the feces is the result of a lack of bilirubin. Bile overload is very rare, and not a health threat. Problems as simple as serious diarrhea can cause blood in one's stool. Black stools caused by blood usually indicate a problem in the intestines...
