Dukwane, a black boy living in Camden, London is the main character. Dukwane is a gifted young man and has the possession to do brilliant things with his life. His highest ambition is to become a politician just like his role model Barack Obama. To Dukwane’s delight, he received a letter that confirms his admittance into Cambridge University. Dukwane was seen as a boy who always did the right thing and had the guts to do that. Therefore, he did as expected on a late evening where he accidently ran into a boy who were being chased by a gang of four. Dukwane managed to protect the boy although not without consequences. He managed to grab a stab in the process of the saving and was wounded badly. In Camden, the environment is very rough, the residents should not walk some specific places such as the canal during night-time, unless it is needed due to gangs who see the streets as “theirs” and see you as a trespasser. “Be careful that you don’t go by the canal, it’ll be dark soon.” (Line 33). The short story is about a young black man, around the 18 years maybe a few years more, who gets accepted to King's College, Cambridge University, and he is living in London. Dukwane wants to study then get involve with politics, just like Barack Obama. One night his whole life changed, he gets stabbed by a gang, with a knife, and that result in that he would never walk again. His friend, Jermaine, comes up with the idea to get revenge on the people who did this to him, and Dukwane thought it was tempting, he was so angry at them, but he knew it was wrong. He had some sort of a hallucination, and imagined that he was talking with Obama himself. That made him realize that just because he can't walk, doesn't it mean that he can't follow his dreams. The main theme in the text is to never give up on your dreams, even when there is something in the way. The short story happens over short time, over a few days I would believe. Struggling with school and growing up is stressing and exhausting alone, so living in lower class environment and having to deal with after school jobs, money issues, and being an outcast can give you a hard time for sure. An issue like this is presented in the short story “Dukwane’s Deliverance” written by Neil Ramsorrun in 2010. In this text we meet the high school senior, Dukwane. The young man comes out of a lower class family from Camden, and works almost every day at a fast food restaurant. Therefore he is upon happy the day he finds out that he got into King’s College in Cambridge. This is Dukwane’s chance to exit the lower class and his usual settings, and to inter his dreams in politics. Unfortunately the same day as he gets the great news, Dukwane meets a teenage gang on his way home from work. The short story is a about Dukwane who just received a letter from Cambridge university clarifying that he has got in. With his endless happiness that he just have things become more dramatic when a group of youngsters all of sudden attacks him on his way home from work. He is now in the hospital with series of bad injuries and doctors telling him that he might not be able to walk again. Dukwane is a black boy with a big determination to be someone great or to be a part of something greater comparing himself to Barack. “Then you’d better get used to the taste of that. If Barack can do it, so can I.” (p.8 l.24). By comparing himself to Barack who is in fact a black person we get the perception of Dukwane being a black person. He also uses it as a sort of motivator because even though there are not many great black men there still are some who manage to get to the top. Before Dukwane begins to open and read the letter his mother tells him that it is not going to be the end of the world if he does not get in (p.8 l.14). That dream is shattered when he comes face to face with a bunch of bullies trying to murder an innocent boy. He manages to protect the boy though not without consequence. He manages to get stabbed in the process, and is maybe not able to walk ever again, he still perseveres though his ordeals from that moment on is going to be many. His legs may not be working anymore, but he sure is not going to let that get him down.
