Dumes Day Photo’s The Nobel Peace Prize 2007 was awarded to Albert Arnold Gore Jr. and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for their “efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change and to lay the foundation for the measures that are needed to counter act such change” (nobelpeace.org), through the documentary An Inconvenient Truth. Al Gore has been on the front lines of the war on global warming, and in his words declares that “we should prepare against other threats besides terrorism” (Gore, 2006). In this documentary Gore cites a variety of scientific methods used to convince the public of the devastating effects of global warming. One of these scientific methods used to support his point is the use of photographs to demonstrate the destruction caused by global warming in places such as Mount Kilimanjaro. In this specific instance he informs the viewer that “within the decade, there will be no more snows of Kilimanjaro,” (Gore, 2006) and uses a photo taken 30 years ago compared to a photo taken in 2005 to illustrate this statement. Researchers and Scientists must reframe from using photographs as supporting evidence for their findings on global warming, because photographs have only been in existence since 1826, photographs can be altered, and they evoke powerful emotive effects on the viewer that are not based on facts. After many attempts and many failures, “[t]he first permanent photograph was made in 1826 by Joseph Niephore Niepce using a sliding wooden box camera made by Charles and Vincent Chevalier in Paris” (Camera, 2008). Joseph had been working on the camera for over 26 years, and by his 47th birthday, he got it right. And from that day forward, the camera took off, capturing all of the events of the last two centuries, eventually finding its way from that first wooden box to the tiniest of cell phones. Up to that point in time, 1826, recollection of the way events took place were left up to the old tales past down from generations to generation. Even thought the first photograph was taken 1826, “[t]he first colour photograph was made by James Clerk Maxwell, with the help of Thomas Sutton, in 1861” (Camera, 2008). The camera was invented just as the Industrial Revolution was taking shape. The industrial Revolution is what is to blame for the rapid growth of Global Warming over the last 200 years. This is interesting because in order to see what the effects of something is on a particular object, you would have to know what it look like prior to the exposure of the event. “The industrial Revolution, the period in the late 18th…” (Industrial Revolution, 2008). With out the Industrial Revolution we might not have the Global Warming of today, however this research paper would have take years to comply, not ten days, and I would be breaking my wrist with a old ink pen. In a 1995, New York Times Best seller, David Kemp outlines the impact we had on our atmosphere once the Industrial revolution happened. “… [T]he Industrial Revolution being a period of great technical achievement and economic development, it also marked the begging of increasingly serious environmental deterioration” (Kemp, 189). Whether or not Global Warming existed is beyond this essay, however the fact that everyone who presents this topic, even “…former next president of the United States…,” (Gore, 2008), add images to support there claim. The idea that you must know the “control” of the object you are studying dates back to when “Socrates developed the Scientific Method in the early 19th Centuries.” To be in line with the rest of the research that has been done on Global Warming, Scientists would have to have Photographs prior to the Industrial revolution to see what the changes where when there was no big industry around. As the earliest noted pictures of nature for studied uses came from Francis Frith, Firth a explore of “Foreign Scenics,” (Galer, 239), became known for his epic voyage: One of the early traveling photographers supplying images for the public appetite for these images was Franics Frith. He published a paper in ‘The Art Journal’ in 1859 entitled “The Art of Photography” (Galer, 239). I believe that you could not legitimately take pictures of a man the day he starts smoking, and take another picture ten years later and justify the physical changes that the picture would display all to smoking without knowing the previous state of the man. You would need at least one from ten years prior to the first inhalation of the nicotine. After all the earth is a leaving organism, and all living thing shall decay over time, maybe we should just accepted the fact that mother earth is going to die no matter what. According to a study conducted by researchers at UC Irvine, the University of Padua, Italy, there is cause for concern that digitally altered photos could alter our perceptions and memories of events (Thompson, 2007). This is not a question regarding the possibility or existence of altered photos. It is unreasonable to think that anyone living in the 21st Century has never had any contact with an altered photo. According to Billy Robertson, a graphic artist and photographer, the process of altering a photo is simple. Alteration of a photo can be completed with minimal skill and equipment. One would need to have a digital copy of a photo, which can be scanned into the computer if a digital copy is not available, and a computer program designed to digitally enhance, or alter photographs. This process is exemplified in the study conducted by researchers from UC Irvine and the University of Padua, Italy in which they intentionally altered photos of two historical events to test the effect the doctored photos had on viewers (Thompson, 2007). Results showed that the people who viewed the altered photos recalled the historical event as they had seen it in the picture rather than how it had actually occurred. According to psychologist Elizabeth Loftus, who designed the study "It’s potentially a form of human engineering that could be applied to us against our knowledge and against our wishes, and we ought to be vigilant about it. With the addition of a few little upsetting and arousing elements in the Rome protest photo, people remembered this peaceful protest as being more violent than it was, and as a society we have to figure how we can regulate this” (Thompson, 2007). This study shows that photos can be easily altered to prove a cause or a point and therefore should not be used to support research such as global warming. The alteration of photos not only misrepresents truths but it also has the ability to alter the mind set or memory of human beings. The pictures shown in “An Inconvenient Truth” have already been shown to viewers. In October of 2007, a British court ruled that there were nine significant errors in the documentary (Baram, 2007). Explore the possibility that there may have been “significant errors” in the photos used to illustrate the effects of global warming shown by Al Gore. As stated early in the study, photos have the ability to alter how humans remember factual historical events. Taking that into consideration, how great of an effect could it have on people who were not around during the time period in question when all a person has to go on is a photograph shown by a researcher trying to prove a point? This possibility alone should prevent researchers of global warming from using photographs to support their research. There are countless studies on the effects of imagery or photographs, and the effects of the viewer of those images. Propaganda has been a vital part of society ever since the day that there were two different men with to different ideas. One of the studies on imagery controlling the viewers, Photographic Perception: The Myth of the Thousand Words, Christopher Harris, a Professor of Digital Media Communication at Middle Tennessee State University asserts that “photographers are ‘clearly able to transmit positive and negative impressions, deliberately or otherwise.’ The photographer therefore can control and, on occasion, manipulate an image so as to control the impression made by the photograph” (Harris). With this in mind, their could be multiple reasons in the topic of Global Warming that someone might be interested in controlling the out come. We shall leave those reasons for a different day. If knowing that your audience is on the fence, or that they might not jump on board with your findings or argument, and all you would have to do is add some emotional images, then maybe I should put some in this paper. As a scientist or Researcher, you should have enough solid evidence to support your findings with throwing in some pictures that will wrap the audience around your topic. If the audience does not feel like you are trying to “pull a fast one” on them, then they are more likely to look at your evidence logically and not with their heart. If you have to put pictures into your presentation and use them to say “Look at these sad pictures, now believe my finds are right,” then if you are a true Scientist, you should go back and either revise your findings or go out and get some more facts. With Global Warming being on the tip of everyone’s tongue these’s days, and every politician taking their own unique and separate stance on the subject, it is very important that they stick to solid, mathematical, and reviewable findings and not try to rely on emotions. Researchers and Scientists must reframe from using photographs as supporting evidence for their findings on global warming, because photographs have only been in existence since 1826, photographs can be altered, and they evoke powerful emotive effects on the viewer that are not based on facts.

The first way is offer onsite day care facilities. The study suggests that on-site daycare is not only affordable; it is in many cases profitable. Further, the study found that a majority of workers would be willing to contribute to the cost of employer-sponsored daycare whether or not they used the benefit. "There are several kinds of employers who typically have on-site childcare, such as high-tech and healthcare industries, and others who need 24-hour workers, such as airline reservation companies," notes Connelly. "The few studies that have been done on on-site childcare focused on those companies with highly educated workforces. We were particularly interested in another group of companies - those who weren't offering daycare as part of a whole package of family-friendly benefits or because of a corporate philosophy, but rather because they had done an economic analysis of their particular set of workers and had decided that on-site childcare would be economically beneficial to their company." The second way is pet-friendly offices. Not all companies are created equal when it comes to the acceptance of dogs in the workplace. Some readily welcome your best friend while others...

The album, released by Reprise Records and produced by their longtime partner Rob Cavallo, achieved huge success worldwide, charting in 27 countries and topping at number one in 19 of them, including the United States and the United Kingdom. American Idiot has sold over 14 million copies worldwide, over 6 million copies of which were in the United States alone, including 267,000 in its opening week (Gunderson, 2008). The album went on to be such a huge success, that in 2010 a Broadway musical was created based on the album, creatively entitled, “American Idiot; The Musical.” Five of the singles on this smash-hit album reached Platinum certification by the RIAA, possibly the most popular being the song entitled “American Idiot.” Among an array of other accolades, “American Idiot” was nominated for four Grammy Awards and was a number one on the charts for an impressive thirteen weeks, and in turn, no doubt brought a huge amount of financial success to the writers and composers of the composition. According to The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), there are three original writers of this composition, being Billy Joe Armstrong (singer), Mike...

Day Care Center - Philippines

...Overview Child care feasibility studies provide information critical to evaluating the potential of a new child care center, based on a complete review of the market dynamics, services, customers, competition, and pricing. This information can be used to determine if a child care center is feasible, and if so, what type of center to build, services to offer, and pricing levels. Since no two child care centers are the same, Perspectives Consulting Group, Inc. focuses on identifying and providing relevant information for each center using a customized research process. Our research process includes telephone interviews, contacting various city and state agencies, and researching the child care industry as a whole. Once the information is obtained, Perspectives Consulting Group, Inc. analyzes the information and provides direction for making effective and efficient decisions. Child Care Feasibility Studies Although each child care center under consideration is unique, generally, child care feasibility studies profile five areas: • Market Dynamics - General information on the child care market • Services - What type of child care services are being sought out • Customers - Who currently purchases child care services • Competition - Who provides the current child care services offered • Pricing - What pricing levels are there for child care services Often, the most productive information is found by talking directly to customers and competitors in the market. The Power of Small Wins

...WHAT IS THE BEST WAY to drive innovative work inside organizations? Important clues hide in the stories of world-renowned creators. ItturnS out that ordinary scientists, marketers, programmers, and other unsung knowledge workers, whose jobs require creative productivity every day, have more in common with famous innovators than most managers realize. The workday events that ignite their emotions, fuel their motivation, and trigger their perceptions are fundamentally the same. The Double Helix, James Watson's 1968 memoir about discovering the structure of DNA, describes the roller coaster of emotions he and Francis Crick experienced through the progress and setbacks of the work that eventually earned them the Nobel Prize. After the excitement of their first attempt to build a DNA model, Watson and Crick noticed some serious flaws. According to Watson, "Our first minutes with the models…were not joyous." Later that evening, "a shape began to emerge which brought back our spirits." But when they showed their "breakthrough" to colleagues, they found that their model would not work. Dark days of doubt and ebbing motivation followed. When the duo finally had their bona fide breakthrough, and their colleagues found no fault with it, Watson wrote, "My morale skyrocketed, for I suspected that we now had the answer to the riddle." Watson and Crick were so driven by this success that they practically lived in the lab, trying to complete the work. Throughout these episodes, Watson and...

A Second Chance

...Harold Ramis’s film, “Groundhog Day” and Franz Kafka’s story, “The Metamorphosis”, both main characters are faced with a life-changing event because of the way they live their lives. In Groundhog Day the main character Phil is an arrogant, sarcastic weatherman absorbed in his own discomforts, without hope, and cut off from other people. He is forced to relive the same day, groundhogs day, over and over again. In “The Metamorphosis the main character is Gregor Samsa, a man who spends his time working to pay off a debt for his father. Gregor wakes up to find that he has turned into a beetle. Throughout these two works the main characters try to go back to living their life as before not realizing that this is their second chance at life to make things right. Phil manages to do so only by breaking through and becoming a person of intimacy, creativity and compassion which sets him free from his exile of living in the same day over and over again. As for Gregor, going from someone everyone depends on to something no one wants to care for, he doesn’t get a chance to have everything go back to normal. He dies and his family, for once, is relieved. Groundhog Day lets us experience what it would be like to make a breakthrough like this in our own lives. The movie shows us a character that is like the worst in ourselves. Like us, he finds himself in an inexplicable situation, something like fate. But, unlike us, he gets the luxury of being stuck in the same day until he gets it right. Where...

Teenage Life

...I knew I was not the only one who was cheated by him. I could not believe that the person I loved so much was a cheater. He cheated many innocent girls like me. “Dude, do not believe him. I think you’re in love with the wrong person. He has many other girlfriends besides you”, said my best friend Lara. But, I did not really bother about her advice because I was so madly in love with him at the age of seventeen. I heard people say love is blind. But, my love was blind, deaf and brainless too. It is popular belief that it is great to be young. My parents keep reminding me that school days are the best time of my life. They urged me to enjoy what they describe as my ‘carefree’ days. I could think of several reasons why people think this is the best time of our lives. To start with, I had a lot of friends in school. It was hard to be lonely when we were surrounded by so many people. Not only that, at the same time I was having a boyfriend who was three years elder than me. Actually, I was not really interested in love before this. But, I do not know when I stepped into form five I felt I should have a boyfriend because all my friends had their own one. Besides that, having a boyfriend was a trend for teenagers like me. I am a girl from a middle class family. My father is a lorry driver. While my mother is a homemaker. I was the hope for my family since I was the eldest girl in my family. I just was a moderate student in my school. I did pretty well in my studies. The school compound...

Management

...Stewart Deborah Tillis June 24, 2013 At my work place we’ve notice that the employees were calling in and missing a lot of work come the spring and summer months we couldn’t figure out what the problem was. So HR decided to take a survey to see what the problem was. Most of the employees were excited to let us know what was going on and more than half of the employees said they was having a hard time with a babysitter and wanted to a three day weekend to spend more time with their families. The company decided to have a daycare center here at work so the employees could drop their kid off and didn’t have to worry about a babysitter. Then company realized it would be cheaper to hire minimum wage help to babysit than it was to have the employees missing all the time. The other half of the employees that wanted a longer weekend the company opted for them to work four ten hour shifts that way they would have a three day weekend every week, we allow the employees to pick what time they would want to start time between 5:30 and 7:30 they would just have to work their ten hours then go home. Made it real convenient when the employees took advantage of the babysitting then that way they wasn’t away from their child or children for long periods. Our turnaround of employees coming to work has been a complete success. We also try to have more lunches and incentives for the employees to be here at work. The feedback on these...

The Effects of Nonparental Child Care

...The decision on whether to choose a child-care center, family day-care home, or in your own home with a nanny can be a stressful decision. Nonparental care has been a topic of debate that has been around for years. The debate can come from how the child is effected, socially, cognitively, psychological and emotionally, will there be a positive impact or will there be a negative impact on the child's life. There are three different types of childcare. Child-Care center, Family Day-Care Homes, and In-Home care takers which is more commonly known as a nanny. The home may be the child's own home, a relative's (grandparent, aunt, etc.)home, or the home of an unrelated person such as a babysitter or nanny. Home care can include the simultaneous care of many children from many families. Home care is referred to as family date care even though the family may not be the child's own family. A home child care center features one care provider who is always with your child. She might have an assistant, but for the most part the provider is the same day after day. This builds a routine for your child, making the day care process easier on everyone. In a center, the providers in a particular room change frequently, which can lead to inconsistency in the routine. A home child care environment is more consistent because one person handles the situations every day (Grey, 2010). In 1998, the National Association for Family Day Care began a program for voluntary accreditation of family child-care...

Non Parental Child Care Paper

...very common that both parents take on the role of being a breadwinner, seeking a higher education and pursuing their career dreams. This has contributed to the 60 percent of children ages 0-6 and the 50 percent of children ages 6- 14 who receive part time or full time alternative childcare other than from their parents. (Berns, 2010). These statistics have raised questions to researchers as to whether or not children in a day care setting are at any advantages or disadvantages because they spend so much of their time outside of the home. In this paper I will explore the 3 different kinds of non-parental childcare and analyze the influences it may have on a child’s psychological, social and cognitive development.
