Terms to define

Dynamic Equilibrium – this states that the seismic uplift of an area is balanced by the disclosure from that area; as a landscape is lifted slopes can become steeper and bigger. This means more surface area which can create weathered rock and/or soil particles. These rock and/or soil particles are removed through difference forces from the surface and then returned to the sea bed for sedimentation which will eventually uplift and start the processes over.

Uniformitarianism – "the present is the key to the past" as summarized by Charles Lyell; even though most geologists state that this word is a synonym for actualism. Uniformitarianism is the assumption that the same natural laws and processes that are used today have always been used in the universe in the past and apply everywhere.

Actualism – is a basic tenet of science and applies on all time scales; if a physicist performs an experiment at any time they will assume that an identical experiment will yield the same result. Geologists have an understanding that Earth's processes have operated at different rates at different times.

Rock Cycle – Central to the uniformitarian view of Earth is the rock cycle; which is the endless pathway along which rocks of various kinds change into rocks of other kinds. There are two simple principles that recognize each step of this cycle; intrusive relationships and inclusions. The principle of intrusive relationships state that intrusive igneous rock is always younger than the rock it is invading. When it comes to the inclusions. this states that when fragments of one body of rock are found within a second body of rock, the second body is always younger than the first. The rock cycle is actually many kinds of cycles that can become part of another rock rather that are similar or different.

Water Cycle – Water moves through earth in a complex cycle, it is simpler than the rock cycle however in the sense that the cycled material is a single chemical compound. Water is considered to be very abundant on earth, the planet is so large that the gravitational attraction holds water vapor in its atmosphere. This is because of the Earths temperature which makes it the only planet to have abundant water on its surface. The water cycle entails the endless flow of water between natural reservoirs at/near Earth's surface, these include rivers, lakes, and oceans.

...Risk in Housing Markets: An Equilibrium Approach⇤ Aurel Hizmo† NYU Stern January 30, 2012 Abstract Homeowners are overexposed to city-specific house price risk and income risks, which may be very di cult to insure against using standard financial instruments. This paper develops a micro-founded equilibrium model that transparently shows how this local uninsurable risk a↵ects individual location decisions and portfolio choices, and ultimately how it a↵ects prices in equilibrium. I estimate a version of this model using house price and wage data and provide estimates for risk premia for di↵erent cities, which imply that homes are on average about $20000 cheaper than they would be if owners were risk-neutral. This estimate is over $100000 for volatile coastal cities. Next, I simulate the model to study the e↵ects of financial innovation on equilibrium outcomes. Creating assets that hedge city-specific risks increases house prices by about 20% and productivity by about 10%. The average willingness to pay for completing the market per homeowner is between $10000 and $20000. While prior research focused on xed-prize tournaments, i.e., on tournaments where the prize or prize sum to be awarded is set in advance, we introduce a new type of tournament into the literature: premium incentives. While premium incentives, just like xed-prize tournaments, are based on relative performance, the prize to be awarded is not set in advance but is a function of the rm's success: the prize is high if the rm is successful and low if it is not successful. Relying on a simple model of cost minimization, we are able to show that premium incentives outperform xed-prize tournaments as well as piece rates. Our theoretical result is qualitatively con rmed by a controlled laboratory experiment and has important practical implications for the design of organizational incentive systems.
