Abstract We present an analysis of a person-to-person recommendation network, consisting of 4 million people who made 16 million recommendations on half a million products. We observe the propagation of recommendations and the cascade sizes, which we explain by a simple stochastic model. We analyze how user behavior varies within user communities defined by a recommendation network. Product purchases follow a ’long tail’ where a significant share of purchases belongs to rarely sold items. We establish how the recommendation network grows over time and how effective it is from the viewpoint of the sender and receiver of the recommendations. While on average recommendations are not very effective at inducing purchases and do not spread very far, we present a model that successfully identifies communities, product and pricing categories for which viral marketing seems to be very effective.

Introduction

With consumers showing increasing resistance to traditional forms of advertising such as TV or newspaper ads, marketers have turned to alternate strategies, including viral marketing. Viral marketing exploits existing social networks by encouraging customers to share product information with their friends. Previously, a few in depth studies have shown that social networks affect the adoption of individual innovations and products (for a review see [Rog95] or [SS98]). But until recently it has been difficult to measure how influential person-to-person recommendations actually are over a wide range of products. Moreover, Subramani and Rajagopalan [SR03] noted that “there needs to be a greater

By doing so, all dynamics behind the buzz in terms of word-of-mouth and word of mouse and how this influences consumer dynamics remains unknown. Insights in the content and dynamics of these conversations could be very useful to understand the success (or failure) of a campaign however. Traditional approaches also neglect the actions people undertake after having viewed a commercial message, while commercials can be found on sites like YouTube and are shared around the world. This study tests Dove’s viral movie ‘Evolution’ and confirms that measuring indirect exposure as well consumer actions undertaken after ad exposure provides advertisers with new and useful insights. 3 Introduction The consumer 2.0 the cocktail party goes digital Today’s empowered 2.0 consumer is very well informed, strongly connected with peers (and millions of surfers in general), has the ability to unify with them & share ideas but also has the tools to create proper content beyond control of marketers. This consumer is more sceptical, questions many things and uses intelligent ways to see through the facade of marketing actions (Jaffe, 2005). With the rise of this “new” consumer a recent trend in marketing called “word of mouse” (WoMo) has emerged. Verhaeghe et al. (2007) defined word of mouse as “the act of a consumer receiving, creating and/or distributing marketing-relevant content through online channels (both textual and audio-visual)”...

Viral Marketing

...Viral Marketing When Hotmail first launched in 1996, the company decided to try a new marketing strategy and included, at the bottom of every email its users sent, a clickable link to sign up for a Hotmail account. This simple scheme had the effect of turning every user of Hotmail into a salesperson for the product whenever they sent out an email. This tactic of turning customers of a product into promoters of a product is one of the defining traits of viral marketing and central to the unique nature of this marketing methodology. Due in large part to this strategy, Hotmail was able to grow from 0 to 12 million users in a mere 18 months with an advertising budget of only $50,000. During the same period, Juno, a direct competitor, spent $20 million in traditional advertising costs and had worse results (Jurvetson 2000). The Hotmail case is one of the earliest examples of viral marketing and definitively demonstrated its effectiveness. Viral marketing is defined as “network-enhanced word of mouth” (Jurvetson 2000). Specifically, viral marketing refers to the utilization of electronic word of mouth to transmit marketing materials in an exponentially growing manner, often through the usage of social media (Kaplan 3). The term viral was used because spreading a marketing message using this strategy mimics the exponential growth found in epidemics of pathogenic organisms such as viruses. For example, with a “fan out” rate of three, the first person exposed to a marketing...

Tradigital Marketing

...TRADIGITAL MARKETING Submitted by: Rahul Singh Shubhankar Som Shivi Shrivastava Sathya Saurabh Sharma Saurabh Tirpude WHAT IS MARKETING? Marketing is the process of planning, designing, pricing and distributing ideas, goods and services in order to satisfy customer needs and generate revenue and make profit. To quote the American Marketing Association's definition, it is "an organizational function and a set of processes for creating, communicating and delivering value to customers and for managing customer relationships in ways that benefit the organization and its stakeholders" Diluting all the verbosity, it melts down to one simple word “SELLING”!! This is the prime purpose behind any kind of marketing. The "selling" is accelerated with the help of properly chalked out plans called marketing strategies. With "selling" as the ultimate goal, marketing strategies are influenced by two basic factors: 1) Acquisition of customers; 2) Retention of the acquired customers. So every other strategy that is laid out will focus on the above two. A Company has to work closely towards achieving these two to attain the desired cutting edge over its competitors. There are also a few other objectives like creating awareness (informational and educational) about the product, brand-building and accelerating sales. CONCEPT OF TRADITIONAL MARKETING: With the world changing at every nanosecond, marketing is also reeling...

Future Trends

...Future Trends Charmaine Saint Surin OI/466 June 6, 2016 Fred Greifenstein Future Trends According to Webster.com dictionary, a trend is usually known as something undergoing change or is developing into something or going into a general or specific direction. Innovation is about timing, but there is not a theory behind it. It includes processes and new ideas and then they are converted into new useful products. It creates value for customers who pay for it. Disruptive Innovation is an all-out risk taker, creating new markets with more practical approaches towards buyer's purchasing power. What we know is that innovation does not have an end, it's the fact that what we want and what we need continues to change. Innovation is not the goal but everything we do to get to that point. I think collaboration within innovation is an revolving trend. This is the concept of an open source. With the internet age, there are so many people connected worldwide, so there is the fact of collaboration. It creates alternatives for companies who which are smaller to have the ability to remain small and agile. If that is the choice, it also allows those less ended businesses to be a part of the larger agenda in innovation. Innovation is a connected function of communities. It seems like we are all trying to come up with new solutions that capture the technologies we encompass and maybe even working with alternatives reworking those technologies. How the Digital Revolution Has Made Consumer-Marketer Relationship More Interactive and Dynamic

...structured all activities to ensure his satisfaction. This is an idea that is quickly becoming more popular and important in the present market environment. Competition has become ever greater and the market is becoming more characterized by similar products. The challenge that many marketers have to deal with is to have a clear understanding of the diversity that accompanies behaviour of consumers and provide goods and services that are in accordance to this. This is because digital tools provide marketers with the chance to not only collect but to also analyze data that has become even more complex on the purchasing patterns that consumers adopt. This paper therefore examines how the exchange between consumers and marketers has become highly dynamic, interactive and participative. Consumer Behaviour The subject of what causes consumers to behave as they do is one that has attracted a number of researchers. Going back as far as 300 years ago, economists such as Nicholas Bernoulli and John von Neumann began to analyze what exactly forms the background for the decisions made by consumers. Their work largely focused on the action of buying and was driven by utility theory(Knight & Weedon, 2009). This theory argues that consumers often make the choices that they do based on the outcomes that they expect to get out of these decisions(Boulding et al, 2005). Consumers are therefore considered as rational when it comes to decision making and only concerned with their own interests. However...
