Facebook is both an application and a website that allows users to commune and share information. Its users stretch around the world; as a result, spreading information at a fast rate. Due to the mass spread of information it can occasionally be over exaggerated or a fabrication of the truth. Thus, creating skepticism for people. For example, Facebook and Twitter are very popular and addictive social networking choices. According to Probst, “Studies show that 63% of Americans log onto Facebook daily, and 40% log onto multiple times each day”(Probst), and this is just facebook. Mae from The Circle also demonstrates the same additive manner, “But she couldn’t sleep. Now thinking about how much better she could do, she logged on again,”(Eggers 192). Mae is no doubt addicted as she logs on late at night so she can raise her Participation Rank(PartiRank), which is a type of social media that tracks social involvement and give Mae a score anyone can see to determine her involvement. PartiRank uses a scoring feature like Facebook Likes, that manipulates it users to obsess over numbers. Therefore, creating a type of “valuable social currency” that only a user would understand. People are often unaware that even simple usage of social media (facebook) may lead to depression. “For Example, social media use can be particularly maladaptive when it occurs in the form of ‘passive browsing’... it can trigger a sense of exclusion, envy, and loneliness”(Schacter). Facebook gives the user and ideal image of how this or that should be, and the user unaware, automatically compares their life to others who post only the appealing side of life. Anine in The Circle show signs of comparing her life to Mae’s, “Something had crept into Annie's voice that Mae recognized as envy, or its close cousin”(Eggers 354). Annie clearly envies Mae’s millions of followers and her growth at the circle. Annie also states she does not want to spend time with Mae due to millions of cameras pointed directly at her. To Mae, Annie is her only friend at the circle, now She is truly alone at the

...advertising costs. It also stimulated awareness and interest in its targeted audience group, the Millennials. In class we talked a lot about using social media to get the customers involved in the advertising process, and Ford did that by having 100 agents test out and promote the Ford Fiesta through multiple social media platforms. It was so successful because Ford’s agents engaged multiple social media sites to increase exposure and enhance customer interaction with the brand. The agents constantly updated information and communicated stories to interact with and engage social network users. The agents definitely improved the value of the Ford Fiesta through their usage of social media and changed the way other consumers perceived the brand. Ford allowed the agents to co-create value in the brand and the agents helped gain consumers trust in the Ford Fiesta. Overall, the agents were very successful since ninety-seven percent of the leads were from those who never owned a Ford before. While the campaign was very successful, it definitely could have been improved. The campaign did not seem to have a ‘core’ message since each agent was free to do what he or she wanted for the most part. A core message could have made the campaign easier to follow. Ford could have also increased the number of agents to increase their reach in social networks to engage more potential consumers. They also could have used some authority figures in addition to the agents they had to provide a better...

...adults used a social networking site such as Facebook or Twitter. As of 2012 the user count for Facebook was one billion people and for Twitter was 500 million people (Are Social Networking Sites Good for our Society?, 2013). These sites are used by simply creating a personalized profile for yourself. By using the tools provided by that profile you can connect with friends, family, and business associates; as well as share your thoughts, pictures, music or links with the world. It gives you the opportunity to meet people from across the globe who also shares in the same interests as you. Facebook is the largest social media site with one out of seven people having a profile and only 16 percent of users are in the original age range of 18 to 22 with 50 percent of users over the age of 36 (Are Social Networking Sites Good for our Society?, 2013). Social media sites have become so entwined into the lives of people across the globe that so many have come to rely wholly upon them. With such a reliance on social media sites there is a difficulty to foresee what might happen when they don’t exist anymore. If you were to ask twenty different people what would happen if social networking sites disappeared tomorrow, you would get twenty different answers ranging from a complete collapse of humanity to not much change at all. Society surely would have a difficult time repairing itself after the removal of social media sites, but it wouldn’t dissolve completely. Social media has become...

Technologies and Online Communities

... Technologies and online communities What is the importance of social media in today’s society? How is it used and by whom? What would be the effect on society if social media were suddenly removed? Social media has gained importance by instantly connecting groups together to exchange thoughts and ideas on both current events and personal opinions. People can express their thoughts to anyone that chooses to log on and read what is posted. Given humans are social creatures this allows everyone to interact on a level that was previously unheard of and unimaginable. Nearly everybody has a Facebook account or follows Twitter and the numbers grow as more and more people gain comfort with the ability to converse online. It also allows a degree of anonymous contribution of thoughts and opinions that may not be otherwise accepted. In businesses, social media has allowed for transfer of information more rapidly and more widespread than previously available. Companies now are able to promote themselves more both within their area and outside the previous norm. In medicine for example, doctors can access information that they would have had to otherwise wait to be published in trade journals. This has been a boon to the medical community. Were social media to be removed, the effect on society would be one of immediate shock and similar to drug withdrawal. People have gotten hooked on the Internet and social media access very much like addiction to harmful drugs and the withdrawal...

KEYWORDS Social media; Traditional media; Online ecosystems; Marketing communications; Marketing metrics; Consumer engagement and interaction Abstract Consumers are adopting increasingly active roles in co-creating marketing content with companies and their respective brands. In turn, companies and organizations are looking to online social marketing programs and campaigns in an effort to reach consumers where they ‘live’ online. However, the challenge facing many companies is that although they recognize the need to be active in social media, they do not truly understand how to do it effectively, what performance indicators they should be measuring, and how they should measure them. Further, as companies develop social media strategies, platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter are too often treated as stand-alone elements rather than part of an integrated system. This article offers a systematic way of understanding and conceptualizing online social media, as an ecosystem of related elements involving both digital and traditional media. We highlight a best-practice case study of an organization’s successful efforts to leverage social media in reaching an important audience of...

Case Analysis: Susan G. Komen for the Cure vs. Planned Parenthood

...Case Analysis: Susan G. Komen for the Cure vs. Planned Parenthood By Katharina Volkmer   Situation Susan G. Komen for the Cure (SGK) decided to stop making grants for breast exams to Planned Parenthood (PP), a decision that the Foundation later reversed. The first announcement caused an immense social media backlash, political posturing and a huge amount of donations for Planned Parenthood. SGK’s Strategy In mid-December, SGK informed PP about stopping grants. On January 31, the Associated Press broke the news and an immense social media reaction started (Miller, 2012). People’s dissatisfaction about the decision was expressed on Twitter, Facebook and on various individual blogs. News stations reported about the reactions on social media platforms, causing numerous reports in TV and radio broadcast and print coverage. Even though SGK initiated the announcement, for about 24 hours, it did not provide a statement, no expression nor an apology about its decision. SGK did not respond to negative comments and its activity on Twitter was not frequent (Miller, 2012). The organization even declined interviews with network news and major newspapers. Its defensive position seemed like the Foundation was hoping that the crisis would end soon. SGK’s position was criticized publicly, as it did not listen and engage with affected groups of interest that supported it for many years. In the late evening of February 1st, the Foundation finally started publishing responses...

...OBE49749 Campaign for Sightsavers Tactical Response Recent research by the market research organisation DJS has revealed some intriguing trends in the attitudes of Britons to donating to charity (DJS 2013). For example, it was found that those who were earning an average income were more likely to donate to charities than those who were earning a higher than average income. Another very important finding of the survey was the fact that charities could be missing out on as much as £665 million in donations a year because they failed to address the main reasons for non-donation, which were found to be financial constraints and a distrust of charities due to lack of information. Among the concerns expressed by respondents were wastage costs, lack of transparency and administration costs. In other words, people were discouraged from donating to charities if they could not see a real and definite impact in the charity’s work. They wanted to feel that their donations were having a definite effect. Within this context then, the communication problems of a charity such as sight savers are twofold: On the one hand, the charity needs to make sure that it has a real presence in the public consciousness, and draw attention towards the urgency of the issues that it is concerned with. On the other hand, it needs to demonstrate to potential donors that their money is being used effectively to address these issues, and that a real impact is being made. A useful starting point for developing...
