Eagle

his poem by Alferd Tennyson describes a magnificent eagle. The poet uses personifcation to personify the eagle. He uses powerful language to show how strong and fast the eagle is. he admires the physcial speed and power of the eagle when he dives towards the sea.

Here is Alfred Tennyson's famous poem "The Eagle".
He clasps the crag with crooked hands;
Close to the sun in lonely lands,
Ringed with the azure world, he stands.
The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls;
He watches from his mountain walls,
And like a thunderbolt he falls.
This poem is very short but full of meaning. Every verse consists of eight syllables with an alternating stress pattern of weak, strong, weak, strong. The eight syllables can be divided into four feet. The first syllable of each foot is weak and the second is strong. Poems with eight-syllable verses and a weak-strong stress pattern are in iambic tetrameter.
The poem has regular rhyme. The first three verses all rhyme as well as the final three. Thus, the rhyme scheme is a,a,a,b,b,b.
The first verse of the poem exemplifies personification. Though the eagle has claws, Tennyson uses the word "hands". In the second verse, Tennyson makes it clear that the eagle is very high in the sky when he says it is close to the sun. The phrase "lonely lands" expresses the eagle's solitude. It is also an example of alliteration because "lonely" and "lands" both start with the letter "l".
In the third verse, Tennyson expresses the eagle's connection to the sky. The sky is described as an azure world which completely encircles the eagle. The word "stands", not a word that is usually associated with the eagle, is another example of personification.
The final three verses of the poem mark a shift in the direction of the poem because they describe the ocean, the eagle's home of mountain walls, and finally, his descent to the world below.

Hotel California Literary Devices

...Hotel California details how numbing the American Dream can actually be. The song tells the story of a lonesome traveler wandering through the middle of nowhere and coming across the “Hotel California”. However, as the song progresses, the out of touch nature of the hotel begins to grow on the protagonist to the point where he wishes to return to his prior life, but cannot. This song, while emphasizing on the fame related side of the success, is an excellent analogy for the secret costs of the American Dream. At the beginning of the song, a stranger stumbles upon the Hotel California and is kindly (and surreally) greeted by the staff. This represents the enticing feeling of succeeding, one that is comforting, and welcoming. Furthermore, there are numerous references to materialism along with the free lifestyle often associated with success in America, such as how “Her mind is Tiffany-twisted”, and how “She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys she calls friends / How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat / Some dance to remember, some dance to forget.” This trend of desiring material items others can’t have illustrates the lifestyles that was stereotypical of rock stars at the time. They got everything they wanted and did anything they wanted. It is not, however, until the end of the song, where the true nature of these events reveal themselves. This lifestyle has consumed them, and while it was exciting while it lasted, it has taken its toll as, as seen in the line, “We...

Essay On Swan

...11 A male swan is called a cob, and a female swan is called a pen. A baby swan is called a cygnet and a group of swans is called a bevy or a wedge in flight. Due to their large size, swans have few natural predators in the wild. The swan's main predator is the human who hunts the swan for it's meat and it's feathers. Other predators of the swan include wolves, raccoons and foxes they prey both on the swan itself but also on it's eggs. Before European explorers had reached Australia, it was believed that all swans were white. Dutch mariner, Antounie Caen, was the first to be amazed at the sight of Australia’s Black swans on the Shark Bay in 1636. 12 Noted for their graceful movements in the water, they have been the subject of many poems, fairy tales, legends, and musical compositions. The swan song is a metaphorical phrase for a final gesture, effort, or performance given just before death or retirement. The phrase refers to an ancient belief that swans sing a beautiful song in the moment just before death, having been silent (or alternatively, not so musical) during most of their lifetime. The swan has about 25,000 feathers in its body. 13 Swans fly in a V-shaped formation when flying in groups. They can fly up to 60 mph, although 20 - 30 mph is the norm. The "divorce rate" is estimated to be about 6%. Traditionally, the British Monarch retains the right to ownership of all unmarked mute swans in open water, but only exercises ownership on certain stretches of...

Prosperous but Destructive

...Hotel” is a song produced by the Eagles, in the 1970's. Similar to many other songs and articles, “California Hotel” talks about the lifestyle these artists encountered after settling in California. To many people, living in California was a dream. In “Golden State, Golden Youth” Kirse Granat May states,“To those who followed the rush to gold, California remained unique: a place to regain health, live on the frontier, build a railroad, exploit agricultural possibilities, discover oil, or make fortunes in real estate. For newcomers, it was still the land of the second chance, glowing with opportunity amidst sunshine.” The Eagles were a band that moved to california to pursue their dreams, just like millions of people across the world. These artists heard many rumors about the endless money, women, and fame thats awaiting for them in the golden state, so they took their chances. Unlike many people which moved to california, their dreams of money and fame came true. But what they didn't know is that everything comes with a price. The lifestyle that came with that much fame and money, was a life style that had no true love, only meaningless sex, drug abuse, and an unethical life. After these artists discovered the true life of a Californian star, they wished they have never came; they tried to escape the life they were living but it was too late and they couldn't. The introduction of this song was very detailed and I think self explanatory. The Eagles try to make us visualize their...

An Analysis of Hotel California and American Pie

...“American Pie” and “Hotel California” Perhaps no other song better expresses the overall attitude of the United States (U.S.) in the 1970s than Don McLean’s “American Pie”. Released in November 1971, the song is still considered one of the greatest songs in U.S. history. Additionally, the Eagles’ song “Hotel California”, released in 1976, also exemplifies American culture during the turbulent decade of the 70s. “American Pie” is, for lack of a better word, a long song, with a run time of over eight minutes. The song consists of seven verses, as well as a chorus which is repeated seven times. The song begins with McLean’s voice over a piano. When the opening verse ends, the piano becomes less relevant in the song, and an acoustic guitar becomes the predominant instrument. The song employs a standard AABA structure, alternating between choruses and verses, except at the end, when the chorus is repeated, with the second iteration acting as the coda. Like most popular songs of the 70s, The Eagles’ rock epic “Hotel California” is written in a verse/chorus format. It contains four verses, two iterations of the chorus, a coda, and a lengthy guitar solo to end the song. The standard Eagles’ instrumental setup for the song includes drummer Don Henley singing, as well as playing the drums. Joe Walsh, Don Felder, and Glen Frey play guitars, and bassist Randy Meisner plays the bass. All four offer backup vocals during the chorus. It is safe to say that both songs are considered...
