Journal Article Review of The Early Literacy at Preschool Education: The Book or the E-Book?

In this day and age, it is important for young children to gain an understanding of early literacy skills, and technology is being used more and more in the classroom to assist with those skills. The issue that was discussed in this article was whether electronic books (E-books) are beneficial in teaching young children early literacy skills compared to books read by a teacher or another person. The article takes results from a previous study that states children benefit more from books read by a teacher or family member and compares those results to other studies that were done. The article describes what E-books are and the features of them that help engage children in reading and how E-books can help develop …show more content…
It stated the importance of early literacy skills in children, but then said how these skills are not emphasized during the preschool period. The author begins the article by describing how children are exposed to technology daily. With that being said, E-books would be a great resource for children to use while they are learning to read. It allows the children to be involved in a reading activity that they can do independently. The article continues with a description of what E-books are and what they can do for children. Digital books are interactive, so they keep the children’s attention and keep them engaged. Children are able to interact with the book which allows them to understand the words, enrich their vocabulary, improve their comprehension, and increase their motivation. The next section compares reading an E-book with reading a traditional book. The author states advantages and disadvantages to using E-books verses printed books. After that, the article goes into how E-books can support speaking and listening skills with all the tools embedded in the

...Parental Involvement in Reading: Effect on Early Reading Achievement Reading achievement is one of the most important aspects in every young child’s life. Learning to read is of course anything but a race, but getting a good start is as vital in learning to read as it is in any race. Children who fall behind in school at an early age seldom catch up. Studies have found that children who were classified as poor readers at the end of first grade had an 88% chance of being poor readers at the end of fourth grade (Jenkins & Vadasy, 2000). Countless studies have been conducted to determine the effect of parental involvement on students reading achievement. Observations and interviews suggested that parental activity increased children’s reading skill acquisition or enthusiasm, which, resulted in success in reading. All results indicated that parental involvement in reading has a considerable impact on students reading achievement. The findings support that parental involvement plays a part in fostering children’s cognitive growth and academic success. Research done in this area has been quantitative in nature in that studies have looked at the relationship and/or the cause and effect of parental involvement and reading achievement. ...CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION 1.1 Reading Reading is a multifaceted process involving word recognition, comprehension, fluency and motivation. It is a complex cognitive process of decoding symbols in order to construct or derive meaning (reading comprehension). It is a means of language acquisition of communication, and of sharing information and ideas. Like all language, it is a complex interaction between the text and the reader which is shaped by the reader’s prior knowledge, experiences, attitude, and language community which is culturally and socially situated. The reading process requires continuous practice, development and refinement. Reading is making meaning from print, it requires that we: i. Identify the words in print – a process called word recognition. ii. Construct an understanding from them – a process called comprehension. iii. Coordinate identifying words and making meaning so that reading is automatic and accurate – an achievement called fluency. I thought the tests that we were supposed to review were just going to state mandated tests like STAR tests and the Stanford 10 tests. I was totally wrong. When I started to search through EBSCOhost I was amazed all the different types of tests that measure everything from economics to reading to handwriting and finally to physical education. Now I do not live under a rock and I know there are all types of tests, I just never knew there were so many different categories. You think that as a new history teacher I would look at the social studies category and pick a test to review from there but I briefly looked at that category and really was not enthralled by what I saw. All of those tests were basically tests for economics and Advanced Placement tests. There really was not anything that caught my eye. So I looked at the reading category because reading is the one skill that everyone needs and uses day in and day out. The test that I chose is called the Early Reading Assessment or the ERA. I chose that test because the acronym is also a baseball term and it spring training is in full swing. I will start with a little background on the test.
