CHAPTER 15 Case Synopsis: The Rise of the New Groupthink Solitude is out of fashion. Our companies, our schools and our culture are in bondage to the idea that creativity and achievement comes from collaboration. Most of us now work in teams, in offices without walls, for managers who prize people skills above all. Lone geniuses are out and collaboration is in. The author of this article calls this ‘The New Groupthink.” But there’s a problem with this view. Research strongly suggests that people are more creative when they enjoy privacy and freedom from interruption. And the most spectacularly creative people in many fields are often introverted, according to studies by psychologists. They’re extroverted enough to exchange and advance ideas, but see themselves as independent and individualistic. They’re not joiners by nature. Solitude has long been associated with creativity and transcendence. “Without great solitude, no serious work is possible,” Picasso said. Culturally, we’re often so dazzled by charisma that we overlook the quiet part of the creative process. This helps to explain why the New Groupthink has overtaken our workplaces, our schools and our religious institutions. Virtually all American workers now spend time on teams and some percent inhabit open-plan offices, in which no one has “a room of one’s own.” During the last decades, the average amount of space allotted to each employee shrank 300 square feet, from 500 square feet in the 1970s to 200 square feet in 2010. Its one thing to associate with a group in which each member works autonomously on his piece of the puzzle; it’s another to be corralled into endless group environments that offer no respite from the noise and gaze of co-workers. Studies show that open-plan offices make workers feel hostile, insecure, and distracted. They are also more likely to suffer from high blood pressure, stress, exhaustion and the flu. And people whose work is interrupted make 50% more mistakes and take twice as long to complete it. Many introverts seem to know this instinctively and resist

being herded together. The author of this article is not suggesting that teamwork be abolished, since it can offer a fun, stimulating, and useful way to exchange ideas, manage information, and build trust. However, most human beings have two contradictory impulses: we love and need one another yet we crave privacy and autonomy. To harness the energy that fuels both of these drives, our offices should encourage casual, café-style interactions but allow people to disappear into personalized, private spaces when they want to be alone. Questions: 1. What are the potential benefits of high levels of teamwork? - The benefits of high levels of teamwork are: increased information and knowledge, increased acceptance of solution, higher performance levels, increased level of focus, improved social skills and increased level of dependability. 2. What are the potential drawbacks of high levels of teamwork? - The drawbacks of high levels of teamwork are: groupthink, hidden agendas, and free riders. 3. Do you think it is important for workers to have a good balance between time spent working alone and time spent working together in groups or teams? Why or why not? - Yes it is important for team members to spend the same amount of time in and out of the group. It is important to think and work independently so that you are not influenced by anyone else initially. On the other hand, once your thoughts are gathered on your own, collaboration is just as critical. Working in groups is the new trend in corporate America. 4. Do you think organizations should provide two kinds of work areas for employees—places to collaborate with others in teams and places to work quietly on one’s own with little in the way of - Yes, because both, self and group, skills are highly needed in the work place.

...In a comparison of my current three day diet analysis to that of the one I completed in week one shows that my eating habits have declined. In week one I was eating six and a half ounces of grains per day now I am at half an ounce of whole grains which is well under and five and a half ounces of refined grains which is a little over the target amount per day. In week one I was eating two cups of vegetables per day, in the current analysis I only ate three quarters of a cup. During this week’s analysis I did not eat any fruits and in week one I ate half a cup. In week one I consumed one and a quarter cups of dairy over the three days in the current analysis I consumed one cup over the three day period. In week one I ate four ounces of protein during the current analysis I ate three ounces of protein. My current analysis shows that I did not consume any oils in week one I consumed one ounce. By looking at the two analysis’ I found that I still need to improve my eating habits so that I can get the nutrients needed to live a healthy life. I need to eat healthier snacks, eat more protein, dairy and grains. I need to limit the amount of sweets that I consume. My diet still lacks the amount of protein, fruits, vegetables, grains and dairy that I need to consume during a day. My exercise results show that I am getting enough aerobic and muscle strengthening activities during a week. Shorter Lunch

...Do You Want Longer Lunch? Are you tired of having stomach aches after lunch from having to eat too fast? Trust me I know you are I feel your pain. I have had to throw away my food one time before I could finish it so having a short lunch is wasting money. So I think we should have a longer lunch! I will tell you why in the next paragraph’s. One reason is, Most average schools have 30 minutes for lunch but we only have 25 minutes and we don’t have recess after or anything. So it’s kinda like our only break besides 5 minutes between classes. And you might only have 10 minutes to eat by the time you sit down somewhere. Another reason is, When I did my research I found that even 30 minutes is to short for lunch. And here at SJMS we only have...

Fast Food

...Why Do People Eat Fast Food Nowadays most people eat fast food at least three times a week . There are adults and children who like fast food instead of healthy food for three reasons , the price ,the time and the taste . First reason of why do people eat fast food is the price . Most restaurants of fast food are cheap , so young people can have one male every day easily . For example, the price here in Saudi Arabia for one male around fifteen to twenty R.S . Also in "Mcdonalds" the famous restaurant in U.S.A the prices are affordable for instance , "McChicken male" costing five $ that is equal twenty R.S , it is very cheap . So fast food restaurants in most countries have low priced to attract all people from different ages and that is very important to every one like fast food . Second reason of why do people eat fast food is the time . So , all fast food restaurants prepare your male in half an hour and they could delivery it for you , it is take one hour to have your male in anywhere . everyone orders from fast food restaurants think of saving their time especially for who has a long and work with short break for example , my brother live in Dammam and his work start from eight morning to five evening , his break from twelve to twelve thirty and it is very short , he cannot back home and cook his lunch . That reason is Third reason...

[pic] [5.4] - Give me the approximate years – The approximate years it took for the moose population to increase to the approximate maximum of 850 are approximately 8 – 24 years. [5.5] - The moose population grew fastest when: The moose population grew fastest when resources were in high abundance and it was at its largest. [5.6] Use a shape (like an arrow) to show me – The approximate carrying capacity of the moose population is 650. [6.1] – The notation “dN/dt” represents the “instantaneous change” in population size with respect to time. [6.2] – When the population size (N) is near the carrying capacity (K), K – N will be small and hence, (K-N)/K will also be small. The change in the population size through time (dN/dt) will therefore decrease and approach zero. This means that the population size stops changing as N gets closer to K. In the case when (N = K), the population is at its carrying capacity and it will no longer grow. Rewriting the right- hand side of the equation dN/dt = rmax N (K- N)/K substituting K for N is dN/dt = rmax N. The new version of the equation dN/dt = rmax N (K-N)/K when N = K. ...options and we would always choose the one with the majority approvals, which means the minority had to compromise in order to meet our agreements. I thought it brought short term solutions to immediate problems in that situation, because our time was limited. Lastly, it turned out to be good effectiveness on the result of our activity. During this week’s activity, I preferred to use win/win strategy to cooperate with my group members. However, it is really difficult to satisfy everyone’s need, so sometimes I had to use win/lose style to achieve our goals. For example, when answering some questions, I gave others my answers and explained that why they were reasonable, but sometimes in this activity, my win/lose strategy did not work so well, because I fail to convince them to use my answers. When people interact with each other, it’s quite hard to avoid conflict, so I also have conflict with my friends sometimes. For example, my friend and I hang out in the city three weeks ago, we had a conflict on what kind of food to eat. My friend wanted to eat Malaysian food, but I want to eat Sichuan spicy food. After telling him that I do not like Malaysian food and it was my last choice, he said that he would eat Sichuan food this time and next time I should have Malaysian food with him. So we went to China Red to eat spicy food, however he sweat a lot and could not stand that kind of spicy food. Finally, he did not satisfy with this. I think what we acted in...

You Are What You Eat

...ENGL 111-A Essay 5 – Persuasion You Are What You Eat Did you know that there are twenty-one ingredients in that box of macaroni and cheese you are feeding your children? What is sodium tripolyphosphate? Can you pronounce it? Think about it, do you really know what you are feeding your children every day? Unfortunately, most of us do not. We all want to feed our families wholesome, nutritious meals, but in today’s busy world it seems almost impossible. Our grocery stores shelves are filled with food that is full of chemicals, pesticides, and refined sugars, but do not have much nutritional value. As a society we have got to start making smarter food choices. Obesity and diabetes have become an epidemic in this country due to the lack of proper nutrition. As working mothers, we have to get food on the table fast. Often, we have very little money to do it with so we buy what we can afford. This often means we end up feeding our family packaged and processed foods. Our children and our families are seeing the consequences of this in their health and weight. We need to stop thinking that it is too hard and too expensive to eat well, and get creative and persistent with teaching our children health eating habits while they are young. One half of school age children who are currently obese will still be obese when they become adults. (Serdula M. K.) Today, one out of every three Americans is considered to be obese. (mayoclinic.com) Obesity is quickly becoming...

Longer School Lunches Research Paper

...much food. There are many advantages for having a longer lunch including students have more time to relax and a break from all the stress that school gives. If you have more time to eat then you have more time to talk, which helps kids relax. Attention spans are dropping among students, and short lunch periods may be part of the problem (Food Service Solutions). Wouldn't you be ready to learn after a 40 minute lunch break? The second reason why there should be longer lunches is that it is way healthier. For example if the lunch is longer then the lunch ladies have more time to prepare the food. Which means healthy lunch, more greens and more fruits. Also rushing to eat doesn't give students time to recognize things like signs of fullness or the way certain foods make them feel (¨Food Service Solutions¨). And the Journal of Academy of Nutrition conducted an experiment on an elementary school. They found out that students eat 13% less of their main...
