Dear Mrs. Who:
Health and safety are a hot topic of discussion these days and our children and families are becoming more and more dependent on local resources to ensure adequate medical care in this ever changing economy. Schools are challenged with finding ways to engage parents in utilizing these resources and learn how they can help make keeping their children safe and healthy. I am proposing that we hold a Health and Safety Fair for the students and parents to create awareness. There will be games, music, prizes and food for all. Students will host this event and assisted by their teacher, welcome their parents to the event. This fair will highlight the healthcare resources available in the local community, Fire safety and safety during sports activities.
The location of the fair will be Johnson Park in Everman. Charges have been waived as a courtesy to the local schools and as a citizen of Everman, use of the park is free.
The objective of this event is to keep parents informed of the community resources that are available to them as a family. Children have fun learning how to be safe and parents engage in practicing along with their children what to do in case of an emergency. Since this is a park setting there will be no need for childcare as parents will be with their children.
Our goal is to: * increase health awareness by providing health screenings, activities, materials, demonstrations, and information; * increase awareness of local, state, and national health services and resources; * motivate participants to make positive health behavior changes; * provide immunizations for children and adults; * teach selfcare practices; * identify topics and participants for future JPS health programs; and * establish JPS School-based Health Center as a source for community outreach in the local community * Children learn about personal safety at home and at school. They learn to practice good safety habits * Parents receive resource information on dental, medical and vision care for their children that are available at the School-based Health Center
Who are we promoting and why
This event is to support JPS Hospital’s new opening of the local JPS School-Based Health Center which lies in proximity of both the superintendent’s office (across the street) and for kids and their parents who live in the nearby neighborhoods. This site also affords low-income families to get well and stay well. HILL School-Based Health Centers are open year-round for well child visits, sick care and follow-up care for a variety of conditions including asthma, diabetes, allergies and more. Summer hours are also available so children can get ready for the new school year with immunizations and school physicals. Students and their siblings (age birth to 22 years) are welcome at the school-based health center location where their family member is enrolled. If a family does not have insurance, JPS staff will be ready to help connect children and families with resources.
Safety while in school is a major concern these days, one way the school benefits from having this center open in the neighborhood is that it provides students a convenient location close to school where they can receive healthcare services. Our goal is to keep our children safe and healthy. The days’ event is meant to get parents involved with their children and get to know face to face who the providers are in their community. Promotion and advertisement of this event will be done by students, volunteers and staff. Announcement in the City’s Monthly Newsletter will be released upon your approval. Our plan is to place flyers in grocery bags, bank statements, utility bills and other regular mailings. We will also include a brief announcement about the health fair in church bulletins. The point we want to emphasize when advertising the health fair is the estimated amount of money participants can save by taking advantage of the free screenings being offered by JPS. Participants and sponsors will be:
JPS Health Network who support the JPS School-based Health Center and are an accredited, integrated health network operated by the Tarrant County Hospital District. JPS Health Network is comprised of John Peter Smith Hospital, a 429 bed licensed hospital with a Level I Trauma Center, and the only 24-hour emergency psychiatric facility in the County. JPS also operates Trinity Springs Pavilion, an adult and adolescent inpatient psychiatric facility. JPS proudly brings community-based health centers to our school district, dental services, school-based services, and home-health services for the citizens of Tarrant County. Alcon Laboratories, Everman ISD, a critical component of Alcon’s corporate culture is community service. For Everman Independent School District, that means that Alcon employees “walk the walk” with educators on a daily basis. New employee orientation at Alcon includes a training session for community service and an opportunity to sign up. Nearly everyone on their employee roster is also an elementary campus classroom reader, a Big Brother or Big Sister, a mentor, a Junior Achievement presenter, a member of campus and district improvement committees, member of the EISD Foundation Board, member of Health Advisory Board and/or any other advisory organization in the school district.
Staff from the local YMCA will be onboard to discuss Diabetes. The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program (YDPP) helps those at high risk adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles and reduce their chances of developing type 2 diabetes. DPP is based on the landmark Diabetes Prevention Program funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which showed that by eating healthier, increasing physical activity and losing a small amount of weight, a person with pre-diabetes can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes by 58%. Brochures and registration for membership will be available.
Everman Fire Department will demonstrate fire safety and distribute pamphlets with emergency numbers and “how to” safety measures. Children will be given a ride around the park by the Staff of the Fire Department.
The measure of success for this event will be the parents’ response to the information given them. Hopefully families will sign up for some of the services needed or at least take home the information for later use. We hope to close the gap between the agencies and hospital so that citizens are able to easily access these services with ease. Children and families will also become more familiar with others who help to make the school system and neighborhood a safer and healthier place to live.

BUDGET
How will we finance this event you may ask? The Budget for this event will be $3,500.00 and allocated as follows:
Because I am a resident of Everman, there is no charge to use the two pavilions and the park for the day. We will have access to the grounds for six hours. Set up will take place the day before and on duty police protection/security will be hired to secure the premises over- night. The fee for retaining personnel for the event will be $25.00 per hour per security person. There will be one officer at the fair for a duration of 6 hours for a total of $150.00 for the entire session.
We estimate that approximately 75 to 100 people to be in attendance, staff included. The number of staff members (teachers and volunteers) on duty will be 15, Volunteers, security as well as special guests.
FOOD AND REFRESHMENTS
We have surveyed area catering business and were able to find that “All American Picnic Company had the menu that fit the budget as well as the theme. We want everyone to feel at home with familiar foods and refreshments. We have chosen the “Red, White and Blue” Menu (attached) at a cost of usd1459.00 plus tax. The owner has decided not to charge taxes as a donation to the class’s event.
