- Due to heavy rainfall in autumn of 2000, the river severn flooded several times- this caused problems for places such as Shrewsbury.

- Development spread onto the floodplain meaning houses and roads are inevitably at
-

risk from flooding and there is a faster run off. Residential area of Longden Coleham developed on low lying floodplain.
Flood peak reached 5.25 metres on 1st November 2000. During normal conditions the river in Shrewsbury flows at 50 cubic metres per second, during flood flowed at 250 cubic metres per second, x9 greater.
Prone to flooding due to a large number of tributaries between source to Shrewsbury, meaning more water in the channel. Lies on impermeable rock.

Impacts
- Water breached the 2.9 metres bankfull level which meant flooding was extensive.
- At times the town was effectively closed due to disruption of communications. Welsh

normal conditions. Dredging the river could create a channel deep enough to contain the water. However, because of the flow is so enormous, the riverbed would have to be excavated by a depth of some 6-8 metres. To do this, rock blasting of the bed would be necessary. Construction of walls and embankments within the town to prevent flooding. They would require deep foundations to prevent groundwater seeping under the defences. There are four main areas of flooding in Shrewsbury located on either side of the Welsh and
English Bridges. Defences would be constructed in three year long phases to reduce disruption to the town.
The cost of providing such defences to resist a 1 in a 100 year flood is estimated to be in the region of £8 million.

Summary
In Autumn of 2000, Shrewsbury was hit by 500mm of rainfall. The persistent rainfall over
November meant the the soil had become saturated and could not hold anymore water.
This meant it ran off rapidly into the river channel causing the Severn to burst its banks and therefore flood. Lag time of the drainage basin was decreased also due to the impermeable rock and development of housing within the river basin. The flood caused severe damage to 220 houses in Shrewsbury. This meant that insurance companies had to pay out compensation but many families lost personal items they could not replace.
Commercial services were disrupted within shrewsbury as transport links were flooded, affecting trade. Marks and Spencer’s reported a lost £1m in sales. In the short term, emergency were quick to react moving people and animals to safety. The Met Office also issued flood warnings to warn people. £6million was contributed to the clean up operation.
Since the flood effective flood management systems have been erected such as a flood wall to try and reduce the effects of flooding. As they were zero deaths, In the short term the flood was managed effectively as it prevented any deaths. The flood was also a catalyst for the local authorities to act and protect themselves against future flooding events.

Assessment of a Scheme of Work

...Assessment could be defined as the “process of gathering, interpreting, recording and using information about students’ responses to an educational task. “(Harlen, Gipps, Broadfoot, Nuttal. 1992. P.214) It is a part of everyday life for all teachers; it is an integral part of teaching and learning and is a basis for planning lessons and schemes of work based on national curriculum. The main function of assessment is to support teachers and learners in achieving their objectives and aims; by providing information about the progress of learners and by helping institutions to improve and perform better. Assessment can sometimes be seen as something extra that teachers have to undertake, outside of their daily routines; such as invigilating exams or taking books home to mark after school; although assessment is not just marking and awarding grades. It involves identifying at what stage of learning each pupil or student is at, as well as highlighting any miscomprehensions within their learning. It is then possible for a teacher to fill these voids of knowledge and plan lessons appropriately by tailoring lessons to the academic needs of the learners. Using assessment is vital for any learning facilitator and it therefore underpinned by the governments teaching standards, which also make assessment very necessary. Teaching standard 6 requires that to “Make accurate and productive use of assessment”. (URL 5) Assessment itself is a very broad term and many variations exist with...

Activity Based Costing in Forging Industry

...forging industry K. REZAIEy, B. OSTADI*z and S. A. TORABIy yDepartment of Industrial Engineeing, Faculty of Engineering, University of Tehran, PO Box 11365/4563, Tehran, Iran zDepartment of Industrial Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Tarbiat Modares University, Tehran, Iran (Revision received August 2006) The objective of this paper is to apply the activity-based costing (ABC) approach together with traditional costing (TC) for parts costing in flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) with the A(2) level of automation. We propose a new model for the implementation of ABC using the product cost tree concept. First, the required resources and activities for each part are recorded, and then their costs are calculated using the appropriate cost formulae. This model was applied in a forging industry. A comparison and analysis between ABC and TC was then carried out based on the computational results obtained from the case study. The results indicate that the ABC outputs are more reliable than the TC outputs, and thus the ABC approach is a more acceptable tool for parts costing in FMS. Keywords: Costing; Activity-based costing; Cost management; Flexible manufacturing; Product cost tree concept 1. Introduction Increasing worldwide competition has forced manufacturing organizations to seek to produce high-quality products more quickly and at a competitive cost. In order to reach these goals, manufacturing organizations have been required to become more flexible, integrated and...
