The Business Case - A Short Overview The company "Cafe de Guatemala" has so far concentrated on selling biological fair-trade coffee, which was bought from cooperations of little farmers in Guatemala. The pricing strategy is to pay an amount adequate for the underlying quality of coffee, which is commonly about three times higher than minimum fair-trade prices on the market. A new business field, which involves the buying of larger amounts of green coffee for roasters in Germany and Austria, requires a new pricing approach. A different strategy is necessary because these new customers do not always demand the high quality which was so far used for the own branded coffee of "Cafe de Guatemala". The payment will be oriented on "other milds"-index for Arabica coffees. This approach brings...

Essay On Internship In The Philippines

...The Employers’ Confederation of the Philippines (Ecop) expressed their apprehension o employing this generation’s college graduates. Lack of analytical skills, work dedication and commitmentwere among the justifications for such criticism. This problem seemed to be supported by the reports ofPhilippine Statistics Authority (PSA) stating that educational attainments of the unemployed for the pasyears have been higher. Moreover, college graduates comprised around 14.5% of the unemployed basedon the Labor Force Survey done by PSA. The resolution of this phenomenon demands the examination and assessment of the education system that we have right now. It is unfair to simply blame the students for the totality of the problemWe have to consider...

Neoclassical Economics

...In the second half of the 19th century neoclassical economists emerged as a revolt against the school of classical economic thought. Neoclassical economics sought to explain the maximisation of utility with an underlying theory of rational choice theory. In the post war period a movement occurred that sought to synthesis the macroeconomic, long run theories of John Maynard Keynes with the microeconomic, short-run theories of neoclassical economics. This essay will explore how John Hick’s ISLM synthesis of Keynes is related to the neoclassical growth model. In addition it will explore how both the growth model and theory of capital reproduce problems inherent in the explanation of multi-sector economies. The Keynesian revolution, one of the “most significant events in twentieth century economic science,” disputed society’s adherence to classical laissez-faire economics (Yaroufakis, Halevi, & Theocarakis, 2011). The unsubstantiated ability of the self-clearing markets to maintain equilibrium was challenged during the early twentieth century by John Maynard Keynes in his text The General Theory. Yet as the depression strengthened and the global economic climate changed, a group of economists emerged that ceased to be either anti- or pro-Keynesian. Known as the Neo-Keynesians, they incorporated the macroeconomic framework of Keynes’ theory for understanding short run aggregate issues while the neoclassical model remained relevant for long term microeconomic analysis of growth. With...

Memo To: First Level Managers From: Lynda Broomfield, Sales Manager Date: 8/6/2012 Re: Management’s behavior With the merger of EnviroTech I will like to discuss how we are going to face the upcoming challenges of making it a smooth transition. We all must be mindful of the impact our behavior will have on morale and the productivity of our employees. Our employees are the lifeblood of InterClean and as managers we are the heart that pumps that blood. Attitude is generally reciprocated. If you show enthusiasm and determination while implementing the changes it will inspire your employees to do the same. Showing sincere admiration for your staff and an interest in their well being will motivate them to work harder. It is more important than ever now that we create an environment of employee empowerment and have open communication. Employees need to know what is expected of them and how the company is going to help them achieve success. We need to discuss the changes with them and seek their input. We should discuss the impending training strategy and how it will affect them individually and collectively as a team. People work harder because of the increased involvement and commitment that comes from having more controlled and say in their work. They work smarter because they are encouraged to build skills and competence. They work more...

Four Decades of Developmental Planning

...The following were presented to better understand the Philippines’ current situation and where we were forty years ago: 1. There has been no major change in inequality in 1985 to 2009. Philippines’ income distribution has not worsened but it has not improved as well. 2. The poverty situation went down but the improvement was due to changing the methodology in calculating its percentage. However, NSO data says that the poverty incidence is growing and yet our MDG is to reduce poverty by half in 2015. 3. Employment situation as per NSO says that only 2.8 million are unemployed however, the recent survey conducted by SWS says 11 million are unemployed. ECOP estimates a good 77% are employed in the informal economy while DOLE estimates are at 45%. 4. Philippines’ poverty, unemployment and underemployment may be worse had there been no OFW diaspora. It has been discussed as well the economic history of the Philippines, what happened and what went wrong. During the 1950’s the Philippines experienced rapid industrial transformation and was considered second to Japan in Asia. However, in today’s economic situation, we are considered as a straggler. A lot of neighboring countries emerged and left the Philippines behind. It was mentioned that corruption, damaged culture and colonial mentality, and closed-economy were theories of inflation on failure to develop. The truth maybe a bit of each theory. Starting from Marcos and the succeeding Presidents, their Medium-Term...

Did Fair-Value Accounting Contribute to the Financial Crisis?

...Journal of Economic Perspectives—Volume 24, Number 1—Winter 2010—Pages 93–118 Did Fair-Value Accounting Contribute to the Financial Crisis? Christian Laux and Christian Leuz I n its pure form, fair-value accounting involves reporting assets and liabilities on the balance sheet at fair value and recognizing changes in fair value as gains and losses in the income statement. When market prices are used to determine fair value, fair-value accounting is also called mark-to-market accounting. Some critics argue that fair-value accounting exacerbated the severity of the 2008 financial crisis. The main allegations are that fair-value accounting contributes to excessive leverage in boom periods and leads to excessive write-downs in busts. The write-downs due to falling market prices deplete bank capital and set off a downward spiral, as banks are forced to sell assets at “fire sale” prices, which in turn can lead to contagion as prices from asset fire sales of one bank become relevant for other banks. These arguments are often taken at face value, but evidence on problems created by fair-value accounting is rarely provided. We discuss these arguments and examine descriptive and empirical evidence that sheds light on the role of fair-value accounting for U.S. banks in the crisis. While large losses can clearly cause problems for banks and other financial institutions, the relevant question for our article is whether reporting these losses under fair-value accounting...
