Community Binder

For the Community Resource Binder project I chose to interview Tri-Counties Regional Center about their speech therapy program. Tri-Counties has many different programs that branch off of their business. They help families in need that have children with disabilities. These disabilities can go from speech delay to a child with a mental disability. They have many professionals in the field that go out of their way to help families as best as they can to make life just a little bit easier for them and their child. My daughter and I have personally gotten to experience this ourselves, and I am still very pleased with their services.
Every business has a mission they would like to achieve. With Tri-Counties their mission is to provide support for their families to make life, working, and learning easier. Tri-Counties does their best to meet all the needs of their families that they can. They begin with evaluating the child to see in what way they need help or if they do need any help. After the evaluation they decide in what areas the child needs help and go from there. The program that I chose to interview about was speech therapy. The program is funded by the government and they are a Public agency.
As I was interviewing Heather Agrusa, I could hear in her voice how confident she was telling me about her job and the programs. Heather is about 28 years old and works as the Early Start Service Coordinator at Tri- Counties Regional Center. She helps families find what program their child needs to be in and handles the referrals that come in. I personally have been able to enjoy her services as my daughter has gone through their programs and still is. While asking her the questions she took the opportunity to send me emails giving me more information on how Tri-Counties works and sent links to their websites(will be attached below). In the Speech therapy program a therapist will come out and play with the child and show you different techniques that you can use on your own. The therapist comes out at least two times per week and stays for about an hour. They will meet you almost anywhere; home, park, museum, zoo. This program has personally helped my daughter and I know that it has helped other children as well.
Before the child’s third birthday they do another evaluation to see how far the child has come since they started the program. After the evaluation they decide whether or not they still need to be in the speech program or can move on to something else, or if they don’t need it anymore at all. Sometimes the child needs to be put in articulation class or they have to stay with the speech therapist to get more help because they aren’t progressing. The therapist comes with many different activities that can help the child.
I chose to do this certain interview because of my daughter being in the program and because I had an interest to learn more about it. I definitely felt comfortable with the program and still do. I keep in contact with Heather and also my daughter’s old speech therapist Kirsten. This program has really helped my daughter and I would recommend it to anyone who has a child with a disability. They are very flexible and know exactly what they are doing. You never have a doubt in your mind that the therapist or the program doesn’t know what they are doing. Everyone is so sweet and caring and will do their best to help in any way that they can. I know from experience that they excel in speech therapy and also their articulation classes. All of the teachers and therapist are amazing. Tri-Counties Regional Center does a great job at what they do.

...Q1: Computer science I believe is more of a general overview of computers / computing. Software engineering on the other hand focuses on the coding / design of software. Computer Engineering focusses on the design and construction of computer hardware. Information Technology is more of a computer science class that caters to the person that wants to work for a business and design their computer systems for them. Whereas Information Systems, is close to Information Technology however focuses more on the business optimization and knowledge of that. Q2: Computer science involves a lot more and is not limited to just computers. If a new invention that came out tomorrow called the Teschescope would astronomy be called Teschescopy? No it wouldn’t. Computers is more of a tool used by computer science. Computer science is really a way to process information, and if one day a better idea rises to perform that task and replace computers I believe the name of the field would not change. ...presGRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS STANFORD UNIVERSITY CASE NUMBER: EC-15 FEBRUARY 2000 CISCO SYSTEMS: A NOVEL APPROACH TO STRUCTURING ENTREPRENEURIAL VENTURES Mike Volpi, vice president of business development at Cisco Systems, was in his office in San Jose at Cisco’s headquarters on June 27, 1997. He was considering a set of strategic questions that he had faced many times since joining Cisco’s business development group in 1994. Volpi’s colleagues had recently identified a new networking opportunity in optical routers, and Volpi wondered how Cisco should pursue the opportunity. Should Cisco develop the product internally, or should they pursue external talent that was more familiar with the technology and market segment? If the external route was the best strategy to get the right product to market on time, should Cisco build its own external venture – or just acquire somebody outright? NETWORKING OPPORTUNITY: PIPELINKS For the previous two years, Cisco had been preaching about the promise of a multiservice network – a single network capable of transporting data, voice, and video. Cisco’s service provider customers agreed that network convergence would ultimately improve cost effectiveness and allow them to expand their service offerings. However, most service providers were saddled with huge investments in their existing circuit-based voice networks. This situation implied a market need for optical (Sonet/SDH) routers that leveraged the existing infrastructure while enabling...

If you are not prepared, you are unlucky.” —Jane Savoie, U.S. Olympic Equestrian Athlete AtlanticRider.com has established itself as the most popular website for horse enthusiasts in Atlantic Canada. In the first 10 days of 2004, the Riders’ Forum alone hosted more than 85 000 page views by its 1129 registered members and other visitors (considered “lurkers” because they visit, but don’t post). This is an amazing accomplishment for a site with a target market of approximately 3851 participants who ride and drive about 18 000 horses. The present challenge for the CEO of AtlanticRider.com is to overhaul the site in a way that meets current challenges and ensures future success (see Exhibit 6-1). The Initial Business Model AtlanticRider.com is a web portal serving horse enthusiasts in Atlantic Canada and beyond (see Exhibit 6-2). The site was launched in October 1999 after several months of planning and development. With a newly acquired MBA (in electronic commerce and international business) and 20 years of horse-industry experience, the founder and CEO, Diana Swain, recognized the need for an Atlantic Canadian horse site. She expected it to be well received, based on the rapid growth of the World Wide Web and the striking similarities in demographics of internet...

Europe Money

...Harvard Business School 9-799-131 May 4, 2001 European Monetary Union In the spring of 1999, Romano Prodi, newly designated chairman of the European Commission, prepared to help create an economically integrated Europe. Since the introduction of the euro on January 1, Europe had been operating with a single currency—at least for business-tobusiness transactions. Despite some technical problems with the changeover and an 8% depreciation of the euro against the dollar, this extraordinary step toward integration had gone fantastically well. Western Europe continued to experience healthy growth—in excess of 2% annually—and the Commission was expanding its plans to further integrate Europe’s markets. But before real integration could be achieved, many more reforms would be needed. While the Commission recently concluded that “thanks to the Single Market Programme, today’s European 2 product markets work much better than they did in the 1970s,” they still exhibited wide price differentials, diverse regulations, and a lack of inter-European investment and competition. Capital markets had moved further, as members of the European Union had dropped regulations and encouraged competition across national borders. But even here, prices and margins remained high, and inter-European rationalization had only just begun. Finally, the markets for labor had barely begun to integrate. Here, high minimum wages, payroll taxes, unemployment benefits and diverse restrictions on flexibility...

AbstrAct: Micro ribonucleic acids (miRNAs) represent a class of small noncoding RNAs that play important roles in multiple biological processes by degrading targeted mRNAs or by repressing mRNA translation. In the case of algal lineages, especially dinoflagellates, knowledge regarding the miRNA system is still limited and its regulatory role remains unclear. In the present study, a computational approach was employed to screen miRNAs from the expressed sequence tags (ESTs) of Alexandrium tamarense. A total of 18 potential miRNAs were identified according to a range of filtering criteria. In addition, unique evolutionary features, such as miRNA gene duplication and sequence similarity to metazoan miRNAs, implied that the miRNA system in dinoflagellates is complex. Moreover, based on these 18 miRNA sequences...

...For the exclusive use of D. Xiang, 2015. 9-200-044 REV: JANUARY 15, 2002 LISA MEULBROEK Kmart Inc. and Builders Square Introduction In July 1997, Kmart appeared to be nearing a year-long effort to sell its faltering Do-It-Yourself (DIY) home improvement chain, Builders Square. Leonard Green & Partners, a Los Angeles-based retail buyout firm, had proposed to buy Builders Square (BSQ) and merge it with Hechinger’s, a Washington, D.C.-based DIY chain that had been a pioneer in the retail home improvement industry. The newly-formed Builders Square-Hechinger combination would create the nation’s third largest DIY retailer, and seemed to be one of the few options left to Kmart. Kmart’s CEO, Floyd Hall, had a difficult decision to make: should he move forward with Green’s offer of $10 million for Builders Square, or should he continue the search in hopes of receiving a higher offer? Green’s offer seemed surprisingly low, even given Builders Square’s recent sub-par performance, yet bidders for Builders Square had been slow to materialize. Indeed, Kmart’s recent talks concerning a joint venture with Waban Co.’s HomeBase centers ended when Waban’s management withdrew without explanation. As the decision neared, Kmart’s options seemed limited and time was short. Kmart and its Entry into Specialty Retailing Kmart Corporation, one of the world’s largest mass merchandise retailers, began as the S.S. Kresge Company in 1912 and by the 1950s it was one of the largest...
