Eddie Liu committed the theft to satisfy his selfish needs, but in the process, all parties concerned had to bear the consequences. First, Lee and Li’s reputation was seriously affected in Taiwan and abroad. The firm’s core principles of excellence in quality and client service were jeopardized since Liu used Sandisk’s shares to perpetuate the fraud. Prospective clients might find it difficult to trust the firm and would prefer taking their business elsewhere. Besides losing important clients, Lee and Li would have to make extra effort to restore its tarnished image. Second, apart from the fact that Lee and Li had no insurance to cover the embezzlement, partners in Taiwan shared unlimited liability. Therefore, lawyers like Paul Hsu, C.V Chen and Kwan-Tao Li were more vulnerable in this situation: they faced the possibility of loosing all of their possessions and professional livelihood. Third, Lee and Li could face bankruptcy and might be forced to close down. Consequently, lawyers and staff working at the firm would lose their jobs and would not be able to provide for their families until they found another job. After being informed about the embezzlement, Lee and Li should take corrective decisions and act quickly to ensure that the firm survives. Since news of the fraud hadn’t made the headlines yet, senior partners should first try to handle the situation internally. In this scenario, it is crucial that they are surrounded by highly-trusted people to help bring the firm back on track. Paul Hsu, Chen and Li should send a trusted person or a third party to Hong Kong in an attempt to find Liu or to see whether the diamonds and the travelers’ checks could be found. The second step should be to empower a team of existing employees to review the firm’s internal control system to determine how Liu could have committed such a crime. Chapter 7 in the textbook, talks about the importance of empowering employees in such situations. Entrusting people in the organization with such a high-sensitive responsibility would prove to employees that the firm still believed in them, even if Lee and Li suffered great loss in trusting Liu. Hence, the processes of the system could be checked and appropriate adjustments made to tighten the control system. The third step should be to share the horrific news with other partners and staff. The senior partners should ensure that everyone was aware of what had happened and reassure them that steps were being taken to handle the crisis. Chapter 2 outlines the need to build trust between leaders and group members in such cases. In order to curb any distrust and suspicion during the firm’s revival, employees should be informed about the current status of investigations. Moreover, they should be included in any relevant effort so that they feel respected and part of the firm like before. The fourth step would be to inform Sandisk that Liu had embezzled $120.3 million of Sandisk’s shares owned in UMC and took off with NT$3 billion. Sandisk would recognize Lee and Li’s integrity because the latter owned up to its mistakes and understood that sandisk had a responsibility towards its shareholders to report the lost shares. Here, both firms should adopt the compromise style, discussed in chapter 12 of the textbook. On one hand, Lee and Li did not have the means to compensate for the huge loss and on the other hand, Sandisk had to recover as much money as possible to decrease its loss. The two firms should collaborate and reach a settlement agreement in an attempt to make this situation a less painful one. The fifth step should be to contact all of the 12,000 clients to let them know of Lui’s malfeasance. In addition, senior partners should clearly describe how Lee and Li intended to deal with the crisis. Despite the fact that this news might imperil the firm’s relationship with its clients, the latter would appreciate that Lee and Li took full responsibility of its employee’s mistake and didn’t hide anything from them. As a consequence, clients might perceive Lee and Li as an ethical and trustworthy firm, in spite of Liu’s wrongdoing. The sixth and final step would be to hold a press conference to describe what had happened. Lee and Li should clearly stress on the fact that Sandisk and all other stakeholders had been informed. Lee and Li should be the one to share this news with the media and clearly articulate its course of action to eliminate any speculations from competitors. In conclusion, Lee and Li should prove that it can honor its commitment to society in difficult times. By following the above-mentioned steps, it can reinforce its motto: “we care, we serve, we excel”. Furthermore, Sandisk and other clients would see that Lee and Li could be trusted and would not abandon the firm.

Film Review

...Ang Lee's "Life of Pi" is a miraculous achievement of storytelling and a landmark of visual mastery. Inspired by a worldwide best seller that many readers must have assumed was unfilmable, it is a triumph over its difficulties. The story involves the 227 days that its teenage hero spends drifting across the Pacific in a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger. They find themselves in the same boat after an amusing and colorful prologue, which in itself could have been enlarged into an exciting family film. Then it expands into a parable of survival, acceptance and adaptation. The story begins in a small family zoo in Pondicherry, India, where the boy christened Piscine is raised. Piscine translates from French to English as "swimming pool," but in an India where many more speak English than French, his playmates of course nickname him "pee." Determined to put an end to this, he adopts the name "Pi," demonstrating an uncanny ability to write down that mathematical constant that begins with 3.14 and never ends. The zoo goes broke, and Pi's father puts his family and a few valuable animals on a ship bound for Canada. In a bruising series of falls, a zebra, an orangutan, a hyena and the lion tumble into the boat with the boy, and are swept away by high seas. His family is never seen again, and the last we see of the ship is its lights disappearing into the deep — a haunting shot. This is a hazardous situation for the boy (Suraj Sharma), because the film steadfastly refuses to sentimentalize...

Transformational Leadership

...In Ethics, The Heart of Leadership, Michael Keeley argues against transformational leadership. He believes that the only to prevent harm done to the minorities by the majorities is “to keep majorities from uniting around a common interest – the reverse of what transformational leaders are supposed to do” (Ethics, 124). In general, I agree with Keeley. He attributes this idea to James Madison, although other scholars have disagreed about Madison’s true options. I will not enter the dispute about Madison’s ideas and opinions; that would be an exercise in history. Rather, I will discuss the content of the argument: whether transformational leadership harms minorities. Other issues, such as the effectiveness of transformational leadership and other ethical implications of the leadership types are beyond the scope of this paper and will not be discussed. To clearly present the issue, I will first define the two types of leadership. The definition of transactional leadership is quite intuitive. This type describes the interaction between leader and follower as a transaction. This is akin to the factor market studied in economics; a follower agrees to serve the leader in return for some sort of incentive. This could be a wage if it is in business, or perhaps just a feeling of accomplishment in a volunteer situation. Transformational leadership, which has been researched for the last 25 years, runs much deeper than the previous type. With transformational leadership, “the...

Globilization

...Globalization Western Governors University Globalization is talking about the development of an integrated world economy, exchange of cultural views, thoughts, and products (Wikipedia, 2013). Pologeorgis (2012) states that, essentially globalization began with the exploration and settlement of new lands. Communication and transportation advances have aided in this process. Two non-Western countries that have been impacted by globalization are India and China. India opened its doors to globalization during the 1990's following an economic crisis in which the country almost defaulted on loans (Balakrishnan, n.d.). Before globalization India purposely isolated itself from world markets and was in a state of economic stagnation (Nayar, 2007). This stagnation left the country in profound poverty with no industrial growth. The people of India faced other challenges as well such as illiteracy, government corruption, and malnutrition (Wikipedia, 2013). In the years since globalization industrial growth has occurred at a rate of about 6.5 percent that has thwarted any reoccurrence of economic decline and a poverty rate at 26 percent that had previously been 55 percent (Nayar, 2007). China too, has benefited from globalization. In 1978, Deng Xiaoping established leadership of China. Unlike Mao Zedong, Xiaoping embraced globalization and demanded economic change that he believed would ensure the safety of communist rule (Yahuda, 2003). Like India, the people of China lived in poverty...

Nike

...Nike swung into action even before most Chinese knew they had a new hero. The moment hurdler Liu Xiang became the country's first Olympic medalist in a short-distance speed event — he claimed the gold with a new Olympic record in the 110-m hurdles on Aug. 28--Nike launched a television advertisement in China showing Liu destroying the field and superimposed a series of questions designed to set nationalistic teeth on edge. "Asians lack muscle?" asked one. "Asians lack the will to win?" Then came the kicker, as Liu raised his arms above the trademark Swoosh on his shoulder: "Stereotypes are made to be broken." It was an instant success. "Nike understands why Chinese are proud," says Li Yao, a weekend player at Swoosh-bedecked basketball courts near Beijing's Tiananmen Square. Such clever marketing tactics have helped make Nike the icon for the new China. According to a recent Hill & Knowlton survey, Chinese consider Nike the Middle Kingdom's "coolest brand." Just as a new Flying Pigeon bicycle defined success when reforms began in the 1980s and a washing machine that could also scrub potatoes became the status symbol a decade later, so the Air Jordan — or any number of Nike products turned out in factories across Asia — has become the symbol of success for China's new middle class. Sales rose 66% last year, to an estimated $300 million, and Nike is opening an average of 1.5 new stores a day in China. Yes, a day. The goal is to migrate inland from China's richer east-coast towns...

Case Studies

...w. wi l ey .c om/ c o l le ge / aak CASE 5-1 Barkley Foods Joyce Stevenson, the manager of marketing research for Barkley Foods, had just left an emergency meeting with the firm’s president. An opportunity to buy an established line of gourmet (high-quality/high-priced) frozen dinners had arisen. Because there were other interested buyers, a decision had to be made within three or four weeks. This decision depended on judgments about the future prospects of the gourmet frozen dinner market and whether Barkley could achieve a competitive advantage. The marketing research group was asked to provide as much useful information as possible within a 10-day period. Although uncomfortable with the time pressure involved, Joyce was pleased that marketing had finally been asked to participate in the analysis of acquisition prospects. She had pressed for such participation and now she had to deliver. Because of prior work on frozen fruit juices, Joyce had some knowledge of the gourmet frozen market. It was pioneered by Stouffer, who introduced the Lean Cuisine line of entrees in 1981. Since then, other firms have entered the industry with complete gourmet dinners (including Swanson’s Le Menu and Armour’s Dinner Classics). The distinction between entrees, dinners, and the three main types of food offered— conventional, ethnic (i.e., Benihana Restaurant Classics), or low-calorie (i.e., Weight Watchers or Light & Elegant)—define relevant submarkets. Joyce hypothesized that the gourmet...

To Grandma

...To grandma Dear grandma. I write this letter to you because I am sad and you are one of the only persons I really trust and you always understand me. As you know there has always been struggles between us Catholics and the protestants, and they have never been nice to us. So now I am in a school where we are not separated, we go to classes as if we all were the same, and that is fine I think and there are no problems when we first are in the school. But the problem is; on our way to school, the protestant yell at us, call us cruel things and they even throw stones at us. This means that mom and dad need to follow us to the school and the police is there armed with shields to protect us so we don't get hit by a stone. It is very psychological hard to me, because I don't feel that I am welcome in my own city anymore. I don't know what to do, but I know that I can't handle the situation any longer. I miss you! Joe Turner's Come and Gone

...Joe Turner's Come and Gone Response Paper I think that I most relate with Bertha’s character. I like how she was always the voice of reason and gave people advice. She saw the good in people and gave everyone the benefit of the doubt. Even though Bertha’s husband Seth did not understand the other men in the boardinghouse, his wife Bertha tried to. Bertha tried to calm her husband down when he was upset. When Seth thought that the other people in the house were crazy and weird and wanted to kick them out, Bertha advised against it. I am definitely like Bertha when it comes to friends and strangers. I always try to give people a chance before I judge them. I am always there for my friends if they need me and give them advice. I especially give great advice to my female friends about men just as Bertha did with Mattie. Bertha says, “And I wouldn't waste my time fretting over Jeremy either. I seen it coming. I seen it when she first come here. She that kind of woman run off with the first man got a dollar to spend on her. Jeremy just young. He don't know what he getting into” (Act 2, Scene 3). Bertha is trying to tell Mattie that Jeremy is young and he does not know what he wants so Mattie should just leave him alone. Bertha ends up being right because when Molly comes to the boardinghouse Jeremy’s interests move to her instead. This shows just how unstable and confused Jeremy is and Bertha tries to warn Mattie but she does not listen. Mattie ends up running after Herald. I...

Cm Punk History

...CM Punk report Phillip Jack "Phil" Brooks[1] (born October 26, 1978),[4] better known by his ring name CM Punk, is an American retiredprofessional wrestler. He is currently signed to WWE, but abruptly left the company on January 27, 2014. He is titled in the company as "the longest-reigning WWE Champion of the modern era", having held the title for 434 days from November 20, 2011 to January 27, 2013. After making a scathing on-air speech concerning the way in which WWE is run and its owner Vince McMahon, he was given a storyline suspension from televised WWE events[140] but was reinstated the following week on Cena's insistence.[141] Upon his return, Punk ceased to appear with the remaining members of Nexus and the group quietly dissolved that month.[142] This helped transition him from a villainous character back to being afan-favorite. Two weeks later, at Money in the Bank, CM Punk defeated John Cena to become the WWE Champion on his final night under contract with WWE.[141] ...

Society - Jerry Hannan

...Society written by Jerry Hannan (performed by Eddie Vedder) The song society is a melancholic song representing Chris Mccandles (Alex Supertramp) journey through his rediscovered life. The song focuses on materialism shaping your identity. The songs theme is strengthen by the fact that the song only is performed by Eddie Vedders humming voice and the strumming guitar. The ebb and flow of Vedder’s voice, paired with the decrescendos and crescendos of the wave-like guitar, reflected the tug of the wild on Alex’s life. The strumming guitar is similar to the cadenced pounding of the ocean, with its tides and undertows; its wild, mysterious grandeur. Chris flees society to find a peaceful place were he's not judged by his belongings, but by his personality. I think he was frustrated by the problems of the world and the greed of humans, as Eddie Vedder murmurs in the opening lines of Society, with the beautiful play on words, “we have agreed, with which we have a greed.” All humans have an instinctive greed, the desire for more; this is universal. How we control and channel this greed shapes our principles. The song has an interesting form. Building up through the verses leading to the catchy chorus. The verses all has four lines, but the chorus starts with two lines leading to four lines ending up with eight lines in the last chorus. As you'll notice the chorus is the only place in the song where's backing vocal humming society. I think it's represent some of Chris's thought...

...unity is the unity between Eddie and Bonita and the continual support from Netta shown in numerous ways throughout the fillm. Another example is the unity amongst Eddie and his legal team as well as the Passi brothers because without them, Eddie would not have the same confidence. Nevertheless, a lack of unity is demonstrated in his argument with Netta and the physical abuse that followed. The most important demonstration of unity is depicted through the relationship Eddie has with Netta. The pair supports each other and this is shown through the active reminders from Netta reassuring him that his battle is respectable and that she is proud of him, ultimately giving him the will to continue with his case. Without the support from Netta, Eddie May never have been able to achieve what he had, such as the connection with his family and the land claim of Murray Island. Another example includes job resignation; Netta was unhappy at first but eventually accepts it and soon shows her support. Additionally, Netta threatens to leave him at one point, but she quickly forgives him and this shows that she is a strong woman and to allow her husband to reach his full potential and achieve his dreams was a respectable move. He admits this when he confesses to Netta telling her how he "wishes he was home more" for his family. If there wasn't unity between the pair and Netta was not supportive of Mabo, the story would have been very different. The unity Eddie has with his legal team is...
