Edible Arrangements The thing that attracted me to Edible Arrangements is its great appeal to most people. The original store was located in East Haven, CT it opened in 1999, by Tariq Farid who partnered with his brother Kamran Farid (Wikipedia, 2012). After being successful in this original store they set about designing computer systems, training manuals, production and profitability tracking and supply chain management procedures they then entered the business of franchising in 2001 (ediblearragements.com, 2012). I feel that one of the reasons for their success is that they offer an alternative to the floral industries flower arrangements with the bonus that the receiver has a gift they can share with others and it’s healthy for the receiver also. This is definitely a niche industry and being the first and leader in the fresh fruit bouquet category has had it perks. In an interview on Bloomberg.com CEO Tariq Farid tells how he and his brother opened a small flower shop and had some loyal customers, and wanting to give their customers that little something extra they added edible arrangements in 1999 to a small section of their store, never even considering that it would take off as it did to become a company with over 458 million in annual sales (Bloomberg.com. 2012). In the same video Tariq explains that people our very health conscience these days, and this gives them that choice in the celebration of special events, office parties, weddings, and catered events and the product has the wow factor that floral arrangements just don’t get. One of the things they insist on is that franchises have prime locations that will receive heavy retail traffic, which with the stores now offering fresh fruit juices, smoothies, and

Lighthouse Case 4-7

...Case Study – 2 LightHouse How should revenue be recognized for sales of both the ship finder devices and service? EITF 00-21 states “that in arrangements for multiple deliverables, the delivered item(s) should be considered a separate unit of accounting if all of the following criteria are met: The delivered item(s) has value to the customer on a standalone basis (i.e., it is sold separately by any vendor or the customer could resell the deliverable on a standalone basis) There is objective and reliable evidence of the fair value of the undelivered item(s) If the arrangement includes a general right of return, delivery or performance of the undelivered item(s) is considered probable and substantially in the control of the vendor”. In this case it says that lighthouse devices are made to be exclusively with the light house services and there are no other competitors making devices that work with the Lighthouse services. Therefore even if the customer cancels the service at any time the device does not have value to the customer on a stand alone basis therefore revenue can not be recognized by the arrangement with multiple deliverables. According to SAB no, 104 to recognize revenue “Persuasive evidence of an arrangement exists, Delivery has occurred or services have been rendered, the seller's price to the buyer is fixed or determinable and Collectability is reasonably assured”. So the revenue for the Ship Finder Device can be recognized after the completion of the...

Public Speaking

...Public speaking is an art; and, like every other art, it has to be learnt, both in practice and theory. For a man to say that he will never deliver a speech until he has learnt to speak is like saying that he will never go into the water until he has learnt to swim. One cannot learn to swim with-out going into the water, and one can never learn to speak in public without speaking in public. In both cases, one has to learn by practice; and no amount of theory without practice will be of any avail. A speech should always be carefully prepared before-hand. Preparation includes collection, selection and arrangement. First, collect materials for the speech—ideas, arguments, facts, illustrations bearing on the subject. Jot these down as they come to mind. Then select the most appropriate, rejecting the rest. Lastly, arrange the selected thoughts in an orderly and logical plan. Without all this, the speech will be badly arranged, rambling, dis proportioned and full of repetitions. At first it is a good thing to write the speech out in full; for "writing maketh an exact man". The written speech, however, should never be learnt by heart. Memorizing is a fatal mistake. It turns the speech into a mere recitation; and reciting is not nearly as effective as speaking direct to the audience. Then, the recite is bound hand and foot by his memorized words; whereas a speaker must be free to alter, omit, or add as he sees what his audience requires. Lastly, there is the danger of...

Case Study: Chase’s Strategy for Syndicating the Hong Kong Disneyland Loan (a)

...Case Study: Chase’s Strategy for Syndicating the Hong Kong Disneyland Loan (A) Q1. How should Chase have bid in the first round competition to lead the HK$3.3 billion Disneyland financing? 1.Three ways to approach this deal 1) bid to win, 2) bid to lose and3) no bid. Chase chose to bid to lose on the first round, but just enough to make it to the short list. Also, since Chase is one of Disney's relationship banks, Chase would not want to ruin this relationship by not bidding on their project. If Chase wanted to lead the competition from the first round, they should have made a bid that was more aggressive and aimed to win. This bid would have been closer to the desires of Disney, making them more appealing and increasing their probabilities of leading the financing. However, they chose to bid to lose, with just enough terms to get into the second round to "protect their reputation", but not to lead. The deal started to become more attractive with the possibility of Disney awarding a sole lead arranger mandate and with the increased potential for a successful syndication. At this point, after Chase made it through the first round, they decided on a more aggressive final proposal where they would be very close to meeting most of Disney’s demands in order to win the deal. 2. He is sitting up close near the board per his IEP; however he is still struggling with daily distractions that is preventing him from completing his tasks. Based on class observations, I decided to sit in the seat where Edward sits to see if I could identify anything that could be a hindrance. Almost immediately, I noticed that to the right of Edward's seat was a big window that overlooked the playground. Thinking back, I can recall that anytime a class is outside for recess I have to call on Edward to focus. Lowering the blind on this window and closing them will eliminate this distraction for not only Edward but also for all the students. Another distraction I noticed by sitting in his seat was the class computer. The bright ocean screen-saver with all the different pictures and sounds was a definite distraction. This was the first time I thought of the computer as a distraction, so I immediately changed the screen-saver to something that was not bright, with no pictures of sounds. Lastly, Edward is in the pathway of the students and the trash can. Every time the students or myself throws something away, Edward only pays attention to them and their journey to the trash. I have decided to move the classroom trash can to the back of the class near my desk to eliminate this as well. Maximizing Access:Because of where...
