INTRODUCTION:
For my ICELT assignment 1, I was required to teach a grammar lesson. I delivered the lesson on the present simple tense to the students of class v, students of class v were between the ages of 10 – 11. They were 28 to 30 students. All the students of the class are able to understand English, but are not able to use English fluently and effectively. They have exposure to English only in school.
SUCCESSFUL ELEMENTS
Achievement of learning objectives: The main aim of my lesson was to enable students to use the simple present tense to describe repeated, true or normal actions. The main aim of the lesson was successfully achieved as at the end of the lesson, students were able to use the target structure precisely, by using the given words in the sentences. Before I delivered the lesson, students had already been introduced to the simple present tense. But, the form and function of the simple present tense were vaque for them. They were not familiar with the rule that, in the simple present tense, with a singular subject plural verb is used and similarly with a plural subject singular verb is used. After I explained the rules to them, I gave them exercise A in which they were given 10 sentences with two choices and they had to choose the correct form of the verb. All students completed the worksheet correctly. Moreover, I gave five minute to the students to complete exercise A. Five minutes time was enough for them as all students completed the exercise within the given time. Students took a lot of interest in warm-up activity because it was according to their level. .

Classroom Management. Before distributing copies of worksheet A and B among students, I gave them clear instructions as how to complete the worksheets.
According to Mohammed Rhalmi:
“The way teachers talk to students, the manager in which they interact is crucial to both successful learning and teaching. Perhaps the most important point that determines how successfully ss will learn is the way instructions are formulated and sometimes it is the point which distinguishes good teacher from bad ones.”
When students were completing their worksheet, I kept on moving around in the class as to facilitate them. I was also successful in maintaining the interest of students.
Teacher learner language. As ss’ level of English was elementary, I used clear and easy language which was easy for them to understand. Before giving instruction to the students as how to go about exercise A, until I gave them clear instructions, students did not understand, by looking at the worksheet, what they are supposed to do in it. Students understood the exercise only after I gave them clear instructions.
According toi John Kongsvik:
“Without clear instructions, students may become confused, may lose confidence and may not get the most out of the experience”
RATIONAL FOR ELEMENTS BEING SUCCESSFUL: The main aim was achieved successfully as the students came to know what grammatical structure is used to describe repeated, true or normal actions. Previous 3 exercises A, B & C enabled them to have enough practice of the present simple tense. Therefore, in the production stage, students used the target structure precisely. Time alloted to complete all the three exercise worksheets was reasonable as all the ss completed their worksheets within the allotted time and they did not ask for more time. Students remained active during the presentation stage as I was asking them questions time to time. I also kept on moving around the class, especially when ss were assigned to do worksheets. This helped SS to have my assistance whenever they faced any difficulty in doing worksheets. I followed all the stages of grammar lesson plan from warm up to the production stage. I was able to complete my lesson within 45 minutes. Time of my lesson was well managed. Activities used in the class were according to the interest and level of ss. Warm up activity was especially designed to get ss’ attention and it played a major role is maintaining their interest and motivating them. In the production stage, all the students wanted to speak out their sentences. Instructions given to the students were clear.

UNSUCCESSFUL ELEMENTS.
Achievement of learning objectives: Students completed exercise B before time. The exercise was quite easy for them because they knew it quite well that in present simple tense only first form of verb is used. Even after explaining ss that what are they supposed to do in exercise C, they kept on asking again and again that what are they supposed to do in it. After they had done exercise C and when I asked them to share their answers, I came to know that some of the ss have done it incorrectly
Students found exercise B very easy. They found the exercise similar to the first one. I should not have given choices to the ss in exercise B. Next time I will not give them choices and will ask them to guess the word, along with its correct form, that will come in the blank. This will make the exercise more challenging and therefore, students will not be able to complete it before time and will also not feel bored Instructions given to the ss in exercise C were not clear and the exercise was also quite difficult as it was a very uncontrolled activity. Next time after giving Instructions I will: 1. Ask 1 or 2 ss to tell me the answer of the 1st sentence so that I can judge how well they have understood the task, giving an example will make it easy for the students to do the rest of the exercise. It will also provide them an idea as how to go about the exercise. 2. I will mention the answer of the first sentence so that ss can take reference from it. Next time I will assign the similar exercise to the ss in pairs because pair work enables students to do difficult task and it is also a good device to promote learning in students. 3. I will ask students to repeat the instructions. Repeatation of the instructions will enable me to ensure that the students are clear with the instructions

Classroom Management:
After completing exercise B those ss, who had completed their worksheet before time, started wandering and disturbing other students.
As my class had started right after the break time, some ss took a lot of time to settle down and they kept on insisting me to allow them to complete their remaining lunch. Next time when I have my period after the break, I will call my ss 2- 3 minutes before the break finishes, so that they can settle down. I will also assign one of the ss of the class to take lunch from ss so that they do not insist me on letting them to finish their lunch.
According to Florence NG:
“If your students know what you want from them, they are likely to exhibit the type of behavior you want. Start out the day with explaining what you expect from them your students and how they are expected to behave” In order to refrain ss from moving around in the class and disturbing other ss, I will assign them some duties like- rub the board, bring board marker ink and etc
STEPS TO TAKE FOR MY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: In order to groom myself professionally I will: 1. Read articles on classroom management technique, students’ behavior Because I think without being familiar with classroom management techniques and students’ behavior, a teacher can not teach students. 2. Attend workshops that can help me to become a more effective teacher. I will try to attend other workshops of my ICELT tutors. During summer and winter vacations I will try to attend professional development workshops for teachers.. 3. Take out more time to read ICELT course books like A Course In Language Teaching, and notes and handouts that were given to me during ICELT input session. Reading ICELT course books will help me to refresh my memory. I will take out some time from my daily busy schedule to be able to read ICELT books, handouts and notes. 4. Communicate with language teachers to know what methods they use in their class and what methods they find effective. 5. Ask my ICELT group members to come and observe my lesson as to find out lapses in my teaching style and techniques. CONCLUSION: This assignment enabled me to evaluate my teaching and lesson plan critically.After this assignment, INSHALLAH in future,I will be able to devise my lesson more precisely and according to students’ needs ad interests.This assignment made me realize the importance of classroom management, teachers language, and implementation of objectives. It also manifested that every thing, no matter how small it is, contributes to students learning

...Education in South Carolina Education in South Carolina public schools has always been a proverbial thorn in the side of the pride of the state. Consistently, the state has ranked near the bottom of rankings in average Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores, low salaries for teachers, and curriculums that were at best below satisfactory. The primary reason for such dismal statistics is the lack of funding available to improve educational resources within the state. Furthermore, the inequities between public schools located in more affluent areas and those in poorer school districts created a statewide need for funding to give every child within South Carolina an equal opportunity to obtain a useful education. Several legislative initiatives spurred on by a report from Moody’s, securities from located in Manhattan, attempted these financial imbalances among the various school districts. The findings of the report led to the implementation of The Education Finance Act of 1977 (EFA) by Governor James B. Edwards. Basically, this law required state funds to be divvied out in larger portions to regions that suffered from low income resources. In addition to more funding for education, EFA created programs that improved the proficiency of teachers and required students to pass a basic skills exam before being able to progress and be promoted to the next grade level.
