There has been a debate for several years in the Nursing community around the difference, if any, amongst nurses who are baccalaureate trained compared to diploma or Associates degree level nurses. It can be argued that the technical or clinical skills of each group may not differ greatly, but exposure to knowledge that can only be granted through didactic education is inevitably lacking in the diploma and Associates level nurses. According to the AACN, The NCLEX tests for minimum technical competency for safe entry into basic nursing practice. Because Baccalaureate students attend school longer and/or receive more credits during the process, they have a greater wealth of information to refer to when practicing nursing. Many hospitals are predominantly hiring nurses with BSNs or when they do hire ADNs there is a requirement them complete their BSN within a certain timeframe after being hired. The Institute of Medicine issued a report several years ago as the result of the Initiative on the Future of Nursing, sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. “Collaboration among academic nurse leaders across all education program levels is essential to create seamless pathways to increase the proportion of nurses with BSN degrees to 80 percent by 2020.” (Institute of Medicine [IOM], 2011)[1] They found that in order to expand and further develop the role of nurses, especially considering we make up the largest constituency of healthcare workers, we must further our education. “These changes in nursing education are increasing the readiness of nursing professionals to capitalize on new opportunities, overcome challenges, and take on new roles and responsibilities as the nation's health care delivery and payments systems evolve in

Registered Nurses are a vital part of the existence of all communities. Nurses are required not only at inpatient hospital settings, but in schools, offices, community health settings, nursing homes, administration, and the list goes on!
